i know a lot of people like to complain about how behind the times debian always is
I think a lot of people just don't appreciate how stable Debian Unstable is, and only consider the less up to date stable and testing to be a viable option for every day use. The name scared me off for a long time, but I really havn't found it any more unstable than any other bleeding edge distro. Heck, while this is only my own experience of course, I've actually found it more stable than Mandrake.
Another option is installing Debian via Knoppix. I found the partitioning a bit annoying as the installer at the time I did it wanted to just throw everything into a single partition, but otherwise it was amazingly easy to install and dist-upgrade to Debian Unstable.
I downloaded the demo of Marble Blast Gold last week, and had no idea that it was using WineX. I'm not sure if I should be impressed or a little scared by that! In any case I think it's another reason for me to buy the full version - to show that there are Linux customers out there for future versions that might be done nativly.
Oddly enough a graphical 2D text adventure game I wrote back in the day is actually running better in WineX than WindowsXP. In XP some sound problems have sprung up which I can't fix thanks to a closed source wrapper. Works fine with WineX though.
One thing I've never understood is the rage over football (both), basketball, etc... Why the hell would I watch people play something I could be doing myself?
I think a lot of it comes down to fans who in fact can't do it anymore, but want to pretend they can. Sitting around drinking beer and getting fatter is a lot easier than trying to get back in shape when you've reached middle age or beyond.
It's been quite a while since I played any, but from what I recall the conversation tended to be along the lines of reading slashdot at -1. But with a lower grade of spelling, and more cybering. I wouldn't want to socialize with a foul mouthed twelve year old in my normal life, why would I want to when playing an online game? Competing against them in twitch games is one thing, hearing their opinions on who 'r gay!!!' or a 'fucking whore bitch cunt' is another.
Oh, and if anyone knows of a english-translated Star Ocean ROM, I would absolutely love it if they would give me a link. =)
I don't have a direct link, but try doing a search for 'star ocean snes' in a p2p application and something should show up. xmule's showing three hits for me right now. Not a lot, but it should be enough to eventually download it. 'Star Ocean (US)' might also get it, even if that is a bit inaccuratly named. I'm actually, finally, playing through it now as well. I'm not really sure if I'd advise waiting for a finished translation or not. I'm about six hours into it, and so far the games been quite playable for someone with no knowledge of English. I'm not sure if I'd call it the smoothest play, but thorns in the translation are bearable. Still, every now and then I still have to reread dialouge that has the words, but not really the 'meaning' of the text translated. DeJap's set a deadline for themselves to have the official 100% done release some time in 2003, but with the clock ticking down I'm not sure if it's worth holding off playing till then.
Now what I'm wishing for is a hack of SO2, to remove all the voice acting of the original game and replace it with fan done stuff. The latter might not be 'good', but it has to be better than the sheer level of a botched job that was the original.
That's exactly what I was hoping for when I saw the article as well. The combination of a mid-range laptop at a fair price that was assured to be linux friendly would have been nice. But only working part time I really can't justify $750 for something I'd only use in a couple classes. A cheap $250 I might have though.
I've been working over a year on the editor for a rpg I plan to write. One of the worst parts of that is keeping in contact with people interested in working with you. I've already lost a couple people whose circumstances have changed in the large time it's taken to get it somewhat functional. I still maintain the importance of a good editor though. It might take a long time to get ready, but once done you can get a lot of help in the development from non-programmers. The artists can test their sprites, musicians test how the music will sound with the plot events, etc.
Are you absolutly sure about that? This is the first I've heard of it, and if true would actually make my negitive feelings about bioware ease up a bit.
So are they talking about a new video compression format on already existing storage mediums, or mpeg 1 or 2 on something other than a dvd - like a vcd/svcd?
Sorry about that. I noticed my error in not specifying the platform of linux only after submitting. The compatibility there was allways pretty good, but the user interfaces were either pretty lacking, or if good - the emulator itself would lack features. I can't recall which it was, but I remember one that actually had a nice GUI and configuration options - only to discover it didn't even have a full screen mode. Compared to that, gens entrance into linux seems like a breakthrough.
Don't take this question wrong. This isn't intended as a troll, I'm honestly curious. I can see how someone could classify pornography as wrong, or even perverse. But putting it into the catagory of actual 'evil' I just can't grasp. So you honestly equate it to the same level as, say, Hitler?
It's a tough decision. The ideal would be to raise kids who can excercise strength of will when up against a temptation that might be bad for them. I think the big difficulty comes in how to actually give them that ability. Too strong a hand and they might get that unshakeable will, but learn to apply it to any stupid thing their authority figure tells them i.e. the the terminally stupid manager syndrome. Don't enforce any rules and they might wind up spending their lives jumping from job to job because they're unable to force themselves to endure the stupid decions made by the aforementioned managers. It seems like a difficult line to walk for a parent, and makes me glad the issue is one that's not applicable for me.
Myself, I find Gens to be the best (and it's open source, too).
Not only open source, but open source with a linux port in the works. Last I checked the linux port is still beta, but I've found it to work very well with a few sega cd games (once ripped to iso). Genny emus weren't all that user friendly before this, even aside from lack of support for sega cd. So I was very happy to hear of this port!
I use a three year old machine at work, and even windows NT runs horribly on it. On the other hand, I have a 150mhz laptop, and actually get fair performance with Linux on it - simply because I can use a lightweight window manager and optimise the compiles of the more important components.
I just don't get that excuse. What more would there be to support than in someone who's ran a system update at any time after installing the old iso? Making an iso from their new rpms over the old isn't brain science, I'd think they'd be able to do a competant job that would be no different than an updated initial release of 9.2. But in any case, a company that greets it's potential customers by risking their hardware is one that's never getting my money.

white chocolate is still chocolate.
It's also white though.
Ever wonder why Windows users arent trying to get Linux games to run on their machines?
Too busy trying to get Linux compilers working well there?

Even odder is that I had to read so far into the comments to find this out. Pretty disapointing, especially given the name.

if they made Quark and Photoshop for Linux, I would buy it. Since there is no substitute in the Linux world
Have you tried using crossover office? I havn't tried it myself, but the couple reviews I've read from people using it with photoshop seemed positive.

"Vomit's really interesting. Ever wonder about it, Dora?"
Quoting that is worth getting modded down!
Let's not exaggerate here

I truly believe that we should stick with pretty-GUI stuff for the desk/palmtop (i.e., Windows) and use the stable stuff (i.e., *nix) in the back end.
I'll repeat your subject line, and ask, why? Why shouldn't I have my cake and eat it too?
I know! Farscape fans bitching about Farscapes cancelation in a story about farscapes cancelation! What hubris!
I think you're confusing good and popular. Friends and reality shows are popular. Good shows seem to be canceled on a fairly regular basis.
