I always wind up dual booting XP and some form of linux, currently DSL 0.9.3. Why would that be important? I'm fairly new to the cable modem scene, and today I could not get any of my livecd linux distros to connect, but for some strange reason, XP would connect. Unhappy with that, I decided to press the little button on the top of the cable modem and see what eventually would happen. XP gave me a report on my DHCP, IP, DNS servers, etc.
Now I could not connect in XP, having pressed the button, and apparently waiting for a new setup.
Finally, all was well, and the XP reports filled out conpletely now.
Point is, if you can afford Windows, then it has some advantages when the chips are down. I had no idea how to determine the information in Linux/KDE. Once XP connected satisfactorily, I rebooted into DSL as a test. They have a nice network dockapp. All is now well there, too, and I am making this post via Firefox running on DSL linux, fluxbox.
Although I dearly love linux, and I remaster Knoppix (see the screenshots), I want Windows to keep on producing a useful and well thought out OS. Might come in handy some day.

I do use a 256 MB stick for a persistant home directory, and I find that sometimes it will not fire up, and other times it will. The Dell usb sticks always work, however, they are good. I often put several linux OS's restoration or home directory on one stick, each one knows what file to get. Also, I put mouse cursors from KDE-Look.org on the stick, and right now I am running Opera 8 that is stored on the stick. If you use a persistant home directory, rather than a simple restoration of personal settings, that is harder on the memory stick, as it is being written to constantly, just like a hard drive. These are neat little devices, but finding one that always fires up can be a problem.

Another GB on top of the 1 GB I already have would be interesting.

Kingston says the 512 MB sticks are $65.00 each, and are available April 25. They have to be installed in pairs. Wondering if I might wait, and see if a new, lower price is posted in a month or so.

I'll have to admit that the $65.00 is a lot lower than we used to have to pay for RAM like this.

  9. The Competition. on Kernel Changes Draw Concern · · Score: 1
Windows and Mac machines are engineered to fit the operating systems installed on them, so all of the installed hardware works as expected.

Windows has it's "swap file" set up inside the partition.

To install Linux, one has to check out the hardware, or at least experiment with some of it, try out a few sound cards, graphics cards, etc. to see how your chosen linux distro works (or doesn't) with the hardware. You might want to set up a swap partition, not too easy on a PC already preloaded with XP.

So, the kernel has to keep pace with the expectations, and the competition, that already has a pre-engineered edge.

What about one of those boxes that has a bunch of memory card readers on the front?
Will your distro work with those, or will you do like I might, and take that out, and replace it with a cdrom drive? Do we cut back the features we have on the new PC's being offered for sale so Linux can be run or installed on them?

If the kernel is getting unstable because of all of the added features, then that is what we will have to do.

Is it too much to ask the manufacturers to install a sound card that works with Linux as well as Windows?

It is unfortunate for Best Buy that this happened to them, and got picked up on Slashdot. All because of the actions of one clerk. It could happen to any retailer, most of which are not of particular interest to those of us who work with computers, as a hobby, or for a living.

One wonders where the manager was? I've shopped at Walmart, and the cashiers are backed up by watchful managers, right there, to prevent something like this getting out of control. Not only does the business have a right to a peaceful place in which to conduct business, but the shoppers do too. I would rather not go in a store, and come across a situation like this, that could escellate into a dangerous confrontation. That may have been why the man was arrested, not just because of the money.

Imagine going into a computer store with a sackful of the Susan B. Anthony coins, and buying something. Most cashiers would just put up with you, and go ahead and accept your payment. But, a customer putting up a fuss while making a purchase, with an obvious delaying tactic such as unusual money, is out of line. On the cashiers side, they are held accountable for their cash-drawer, and they could be fired or forced out for shortages over time. So, they can get a little unhappy with customers that have a statement like this to present, at their expense, and the other customers waiting in the line.
