  1. No simple answer on Why Has Blu-ray Failed To Catch Hold? · · Score: 1

My father would love to have a good blue-ray collection but he has terrible internet service where he is so half the features blue-ray players offer, like streaming Netflix and Pandora aren't viable for him. My mother can't tell the difference between Blue-ray and DVD either so he doesn't bother to spend the 30$ for the discs.

To make matters even more complex, he has around 400 DVD's already. He's not going to re-buy all those on Blue-ray so his DVD player works just fine for him.

I own two Blue-ray players and would love to own more Blue-ray discs but truthfully, when new releases are coming out at 30$ it's easier for me to just download it from The Pirate Bay.

Furthermore, it's been a while since something came out I cared enough about to actual own. Maybe I'm getting old, but movies coming out these days just don't appeal to me. I think a lot of people feel the same right now, especially when money is tight in a down economy.

  3. Yes on Ask Slashdot: Do I Give IT a Login On Our Dept. Server? · · Score: 3, Insightful

If you're hit by a car tomorrow and die you want someone else to be able to pick up the work and go forward. Once upon a time I had a VP I worked for at an ISP put me and the other head of the IT department on a plane with him to LA. The three of us were the only ones with access to the entire companies systems. I mentioned to him, if the plane went down, the company would probably be dead within a week. He just laughed it off.

That said, your IT department are the best ones to handle this. I doubt the hospital is paying you to play tech nerd, I'm sure you have other work you should be doing. The IT guys are PAID to do this and are screened carefully (at least I hope so) by management to be trustworthy in doing it.

It sounds to me more like you're looking for job security by being the only one with keys to the castle.

  4. Re:Isn't it obvious? on How the Social Tech Bubble Is Different · · Score: 1

It's strange you mention this. I actually spent a couple weeks looking for services I COULD pay for as replacements for Facebook/Gmail, etc. I couldn't find one. Sure I found paid for email services but not one single service was anywhere near as stable, reliable and/or feature complete as Gmail. Neither could I find a "social" network of any meaningful type for whcich I could give money in exchange for some basic privacy.

It's as if the whole industry just gave up and stopped competing in any way. I seriously doubt I am the only person who would love a paid gmail account minus ads and privacy issues. The whole tech industry is now ad driven. No one even wants my money. They just want my personal information, which appears to be much more profitable for them.

  5. Re:So? Advertising is new? on How the Social Tech Bubble Is Different · · Score: 5, Insightful

Advertising has alway existed, but it's never existed on this scale. We're seeing a type of advertising now that dwarfs even the insane propoganda put out during rival governments during war time. You can't go anywhere, do anything without ads everywhere. In movies, buses, signs, TV, radio. Hell even my place of employment covers the walls with ads for products because they get kick backs from the vendors. I walk down a hallway every day with coca cola and apple plastered over the walls.

To say it's always existed is like saying viruses always existed while everyone around you is dying of AIDS. At no other time in history have we been so over come with bullshit. That is the point.

I agree. I bought one a few years ago, the old 2nd gen with 3g. I've always been an avid reader but my girlfriend not so much. I got her the new wifi version when it first came out and she's done nothing but read on it since. We don't even watch movies anymore, a lot of nights we "go to bed early" just so we can read. It's truly a great device in every way. I just can't grasp all the whining about it. I think it simply has to be people who've never used or owned one.

Science is absolutely about competition. The "Space Race" was the single greatest time in scientific advancement in history. Being the first to do something great is a fantastic motivator. I can't think of anything more scientific than competition. The desire to be better, to do better, to create and innovate are all competitive.
