Therein lies the test. You touched on an important piece of criteria for human evolution. Having knowledge without wisdom is the same as having power without control. It is an accident waiting to happen. I ofter wonder (now I wonder out loud), will we survive? If not, will it be the small (virus, bacteria), the big (asteroid, comet), or will it be ourselves (thermonukes, chem/bio agents) that lead to the end of days? Perhaps GRACE will be "programmed" with reproductive subroutines so that a part of us will survive the apocalypse.

OTOH if we do survive, and GRACE evolves at the pace of technology, what happens when "Cyberdyne" (or GRACE) becomes "self-aware" and recognizes humanity as an enemy?

I think we are screwed either way.

In the past, Microsoft has either presented an "open" standard, or pushed someone else's open standard, only to hijack it in the end, to the detriment of non-Windows users and developers.

Don't you mean "Sun"? They presented Java as an "open" standard only to pull it back before ISO could certify it. Don't blame Microsoft for Sun's flip-flop. If Java had been standardized, there would be little room (and little need) for .NET and its CLR. And I don't want to hear about Microsoft tainting pure Java. Sun and Java are not victims here. They shot themselves in the foot long ago.

Yes, I can RTFM, and know the difference between \ and / but sometimes I'm just stuck - out of options/ideas. So I ask for help only to recieve insult. ::Curls up under the desk and twitches:: Windows makes it too easy for newbies. n00bs can just thump thru the wizard and throw up a default instance of IIS, Exchange, SQL, just begging to be hacked. The relatively poor quality of Windows Admins is a big reason it got such a bad name. A Linux n00b could produce an equally inferior installation of *NIX/Apache/MySQL

If you talking about "computing-in-general" newbies, then are you advocating they get their feet wet with Windows? That is conter-productive to your cause. You need to embrace all newbies and extend your love to the entire communitiy. Dont banish them to some other platform becuase they didn't know how to re-compile their video driver.

Well then, thank you very much for the support back then. I really enjoyed my time with OS/2 and REXX. I always got great support when I needed it. Too bad Microsoft got the developers attention and won the desktop despite its inferior OS. I was angry when the corporate direction was to abandon LAN Server, OS/2, Comm.Mgr et al. I would jump at the chance to run a "new" OS/2 with ObjREXX or NetREXX as a scripting language. I just can't get myself to take Linux seriously. So much in-fighting and hostillity toward newbies. It doesn't stand a chance as a business desktop or a home user OS. I'll bet its days as a server OS are numbered as well. A modern OS/2 OTOH would be a godsend if it was as easy to use and configure and was as reliable as its ancestor. I'll keep looking.

I would never trust my biz to an Open Sores OS with a recompiled kernel by that pimple-faced-intern last year trying to improve secuirty cuz he "heard" it on some IRC channel. Great. Now I've gotta comb thru thousands of lines of code to unphuck my system? No way. Linix is fun to play with, but if I've got a deadline, my productivity is done with the help of the Evil Empire. From the atricle... Free exposure is practically a thing of the past for entertainers. Getting your record played at radio costs more money than most of us dream of ever earning. Free downloading gives a chance to every do-it-yourselfer out there. Every act that can't get signed to a major, for whatever reason, can reach literally millions of new listeners, enticing them to buy the CD and come to the concerts. Where else can a new act, or one that doesn't have a label deal, get that kind of exposure?

The RIAA (et al) needs to limit consumer choice for thier own protection. It can't accomodate (read "control") the number of artists that gain popularity via internet. Not only that, but has anyone noticed the 101 "college bands" out there with a very similar sound. It feels (and sounds) very structured and manufactured. NOT the way rock-n-roll was meant to be. I can't stand the radio anymore. Its the same 15 songs over and over all damn day. Over half of those song have the same 3rd eye barenaked goo goo creed sound. Man...Funk that. That was a very good, very lucid article. The internet has excelled at cutting out the middle man in many cases. May the RIAA be the next to fall - for the greater good of artists and music fans alike. Although with thier lobbying power, the only thing that can beat "big money" is "bigger money".
