First, I am not sure at all how operating systems are relavant.
Second I am comparing the cost of traveling across the country now to a long time ago. I am pointing out that it got cheaper. Of course it was more expensive to make an OS 50 years ago. Of course it was more expensive to get across the country. My point is that this guy is complaining that not only should they get him across the country for less they should give him all sorts of free crap along with it. Like the seat, the free drink, and the *cough* security *cough*, aren't enough free stuff. Not to mention magazines to read, free pillows and blankets and the occasional cute flight attendant to enjoy along the way. Sheesh!

No thats not enough we need free Internet access on our planes too.

You can cross the country for ~$200. That's cheap by any standard. Seriously. how can you say that airlines are overcharging and should be adding services for free. The idea that you can get from New York to LA in 6 hours. That is madness. Tell that to the pioneers that took 6 months and spent hundreds of dollars (in 1850's money) and they would shit a brick.

If anything you should get free airplane flights with your starbucks. They are the ones overcharging. $2-3 for a cup of coffee. At that price it better come with some pr0n.

Would something like this be web service based? interested to hear the actual press release from IBM. 18. Hardware Manufacturere :-) on Projected 'Average' Longhorn System Is A Whopper · · Score: 1

With all the Wintel conspiracies flying around I figure someone would have mentioned it by now.

Could it be that the chip manufacturers are begging MS to make a bloated OS? Could it be that if they require dual procs that Intel's revenue doubles. They sell twice the processors just like that.

For the past 5 years or so the trend in business has been consolidation of business logic to servers, and moving clients to the thin client. This means businesses can wait longer to upgrade hardware and buy cheaper hardware when they do upgrade.

This seems like an entirely different plan for MS. Remember "My Services". I was never going to have to install another application ever again. I was just going to rent time on a MS server to write my word documents. Everyone at MS said that Web Services were going to do all the work and that all my computer had to do was show the results in the web browser.

My guess is that the real reason longhorn needs a dual proc configuration is because the DRM and encryption on the music I listen to will be so intense it will require 2-4 ghz procs to decrypt it in real time.

I worked developing a kiosk under windows. We had huge problems with random windows errors. Our application was a jsp app in tomcat running on the local machine. We (the developers) wanted to port it to linux. Unfortunately our application was being developed in an academic setting. Our sponsoring professor, who got lots of money from microsoft wasn't up for that so much. He said, well it won't be supported and we have all these microsoft people who can give us support when things go wrong. Yeah right.

I know that to developers there is this obvious less is more view of linux when it is on the back end. But management, the ones who make all the real decisions about this stuff, just doesn't get it sometimes. If its not "supported" by corporate dollars, which I guess comes from us paying for it, it isn't acceptable.

I think the answer to your question is perceived superiority in management's eyes, and the attitude that Windows is more common so it will be easier for some stupid support guy to fix.

  20. Why not use a GC Processor and Memory on A Glance At Garbage Collection In OO Languages · · Score: 1

Why not employ a processor with its own ram, seperate from the main system to do nothing but GC? Expensive? Not really. Consider a machine with 8 processors and 8GB of ram for an app server. Whats 1 more of each to the cost? This solves the paging problems as memory can be paged into the separate memory space. It does not eat up processor because it is a dedicated task. It only hurts disk performance when the disk has to be hit for a page fault. A dedicated "device" (term used loosely here) would create an almost impact free way to manage memory. Would this work? I'm still thinking it out myself.

  21. Re:Merge with Apple on Should Sun Just Fold Now? · · Score: 1

Apple is better off doing something like buying JBoss (They have had experience with this business model in Darwin). Then stealing away some of Sun's Java team to ensure that their implementation of the JRE will be better than Sun's (Or IBM, BEA, Whoever else). Apple has a great opportunity to really start to play in the Enterprise space. It will be Java that gets them there. (Assuming .Net/Mono doesn't end up screwing J2EE--Which is highly unlikely). If Apple focused on having the most stable implementation of the Java platform around, they would go a long way in the mid range app server industry. Price competitive with Dell for small servers and a competitive J2EE offering in JBoss with the ease of use of Apple.

Mark my words, Apple is making a comeback. Sun...not so much. I think IBM is the ONLY company that will continue to cost effictively and proffitably offer large, mainframish, servers. Sun may get swallowed up by someone, but it won't be Apple.
