I think you are missing the concern people have with fragmentation. Perl, C, C++ do not run in a virtual machine. Java does. Nobody is concerned about the syntax changing. In fact it is to everyone's advantage to keep the syntax the same. Imagine if MS had free reign to redistribute, rewrite, change the Java API's. So now the Java API's look a lot like the.NET api's. in fact they run on the.NET platform. Sort of like J#, except now that the Java language is open MS can actually call it Java and nobody can sue them. So when I go to write my java code on my windows vm (because I am unsuspecting) I don't know it won't run anywhere else because the MS api's are not the real API's and now anyone who wants ot use my program needs a windows box. NOT GOOD
I finally threw out my irix box from SG. It was so cute sitting in the corner being all purple...what is wrong with me...its a friggin computer...I needed to move on.
I figure that the government is so bad at effeciently using information anyway this doesn't matter. I don't know how this is a big deal compared to corporate data mining. Government is at least motivated by "serving the people" (yeah yeah Iknow that is nto always true) where corporate uses of data are motivated by serving shareholders interests (At least most of the time- *cough*Enron*cough*).
After reading the article and getting to the end...the stuff about msuic going back to cavemen and music is magic and corporations are evil and are destroying the world. I can't help but think that it is time for the Wild Stallions to break through all that and save the world. Who knew that Keanu Reeves would really be "the one" (or at least the 1/2, we cant forget about bill or was it ted...shit!)
Thsi product would violate everything that modern marketing principles teach about market segmentation. An attempt to compete in the console segment with a $600 computer and an attempt to compete in the computer market with a $600 console. I am not interested in buying either a $600 computer or a $600 console. Especially not a console that will not work on my current TV and requires me to hook it up to a pc monitor (I don't have HDTV). They have created a new prdouct. Except that they refuse to define what it is. How can you sell me something if you don't have a category for it. Good luck on that one MS.
Or for that matter 30TB everyday. 30TB * 3 hrs is 90 hrs. It can't be done with the mentioned configuration. 30TB will cost a couple hundred dollars to ship fedex and it will take 12 hrs. Cheaper and faster.
Smart move: By supporting two distributors, IBM can keep either one from becoming the next Microsoft.
Can one distro really become so dominant that they monopolize the linux market? you can't get stuck on a single distro and be forced to use their distro to run their software can you?
I mean I guess you could...but that defeats the whole point of linux... It would by default kill its appeal.
The trade group, which represents the five largest recording companies, has settled more than 400 of those cases for around $3,000 each.
I cannot imagine that the cost to figure out your name, hire a lawyer to write you a letter and serve you with papers then settle the case is less than $3000. Seems to me that the RIAA is letting people off for the cost of being told they did something wrong. I can't really see a problem with this.
I find it interesting that nobody has actually said sex yet. Lots of jokes about it...but nobody really said it. Closest I have seen is that a friend of mine went on a date a while back...halfway through the date the girl says..."so I am having some problems with my computer...can you help me fix it?"...doh!
That may be...but the point I was making is that in order to have a trademark you have to vigorously pursue defending it. Any single instance of it not being defended is grounds for losing your trademark. This is according to trademark laws.
It doesn't matter if you license the offending companies product. You still didn't defend your trademark.
What's funny is that not only do they own the word Windows...they want to own the word lindows and I guess didnows and bindows and anything that ends in *indows. Next they will want everything that ends in ****s.
And by that shouldn't ms be suing companies for things like win-zip and win-ftp,. Isn't this just an attempt to capitalize on the Windows name? Don't they have to vigorously protect their trademark to keep it? How can they go after Lindows and not these others?
Well...that is an interesting quetion as I do not use X all that often. however this solution is based on Eclipse, and therefore java. The SWT toolkit that Eclipse is based on allows some very rich GUI features. This system allows a very extensible framework (check out eclipse ). Applications can be developed rapidly. Not with the difficulty of building widgets in X. This system wil lrun natively on WINDOWS which X won't do very well. it is not just a web based framework which is missed in this whole discussion. It is a platform, much like Mozilla. Eclipse is cool and it is great to see that IBM is pushing it to a new level.
Fair Enough!

So do you!
learning defects in laboratory animals
They're ANIMALS. Are we really capable of measuring the learning ability of a lab rat vs. another lab rat?
20 or more Macs does cost money...$10K a year
that sounds pretty cheap. ~500/seat Does anyone know the numbers for support for 20 windows machines. To actually support them?
thanks!

I am pretty sure that this is called anti-competitive behavior
They could call it the iDildo. Looks and feels like the real thing. Just don't expect it to perform like it.

automation of a variety of interactions
You mean I could automate the reading of slashdot. I would get so much more done every day.
Actually I rather hope that there will one day be a molecule sized computer that can eridacate politicians!
Except that it didn't get there yet!
Now I can finally justify replacing my stolen PS2. If I ever find the bastard that took that thing. Oooohhhh!

I think you and I are making the same point here.
somehow there is a space in a url I copy/pasted. Oh well.
