  1. ADHOC/MacHack on Favorite Programming Contests? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'll second the OP's favorite. I've only attended for two years, but it's a great conference. I'm for sure going again this year.

I came in second place two years ago in the showcase by teaming up with someone else to write a networked Pong game that literally played across the screens. The paddles were on the end computers, and the ball would bounce across all the computers between it. It hovered over the desktop, which we demonstrated by showing a QuickTime movie playing in the background on one of the computers. I think the best part was that the text showing the score spanned all the computers hooked up. We called it AirPong, because we happened to be networked over Airport.

However, the winner's entry was great. It was Unstoppable Progress bars, a haxie that turned the system progress bars, which fill up with "aqua" colored liquid, into un-capped bars that would spill out and fill up the window.

It's a great experience with developers gathering in the atrium of the hotel and teaming up as needed to create really great things.

If you're a Mac/UNIX programmer, or are even remotely interested in it, I highly recommend it.

However, I do appreciate the information on WMP.

  9. Re:Amazing… on Media Streaming for Dummies? · · Score: 3, Informative

Well, two things. 1) Some kid generally creates the animation, which in turn makes him/her learn how to do that, and 2) The kids read the news to be able to broadcast it.

Interactive learning is the best way to go. Not only do kids hear the news from their peers, they also get to participate in sharing the news, as well as helping out with the process behind the broadcast, as minimal as it may be. The days of using text books only while having a teacher lecture are over!

As the OP, I just wanted to thank everyone. I did google for this, but I couldn't get the right combination of keywords -- too many people sell "live video streaming."

QuickTime broadcaster looks like exactly what is needed for this job.

Thanks again everyone. Sorry for being too easy ;)

Sure, I can do it, you can do it, but do you really want every person under the sun trying to replace their graphics cards? Tech support nightmare... Thirdly, last time I went to the store, I had options as to whether I wanted to buy an GeForce FX 5900 without a processor on the board, or with a processor on the board. That distinction made the card go from roughly $130 up to $400 (in my particular Fry's store).

If you end up building your own system, you're right. However, there are still plenty of low-end graphics cards that companies stick into computers just to save another 50 bucks in the manufacturing cycle. When this happens, you still have the "top-of-the-line" graphics chipset, but the board doesn't have its own processor. Without the onboard processor, the CPU does matter.

I remember a story in Wired a year or two ago that detailed how nvidia's CEO (or was it CTO.. it was a while ago) envisioned most of the workload for the computer on the graphics card, and the main CPU not needing to be very powerful. I wonder what he's thinking nowadays?
