  1. An ongoing trend.... on Using Sound To Test Internet Connections · · Score: 1

The every-other-month posts about turning xxxx into sound....it's funny all the things they take and turn into sound, but why a ping? That CANNOT be the easiest/best way to do it, is the sound the ping makes (I cannot get the sound of sonar out of my head no matter how hard I try) going to be monitored by machine? If not whats to say the person monitoring it doesn't have crappy hearing. And if a machine monitors it, that CAN'T be a lightweight bit of software/hardware.

I agree with the "they thought it was cool" blurb.

Those are some great example of how to get around un-noticed online, but what about the real world? People seem to forget that collecting information is only good when its ACCURATE. For example, between me and friends there is a sort of methodology to the way we buy things, cash is king the the "hard to track" section of things, and seeing as how in this state (MO) any B&M business is reuired to accept cash, it makes it hard not to use this method. Sure it may require a bit more forethought (only so much as to goto the ATM beforehand) but the benefit of knowing that my every purchase isn't scrutinized on a moment-to-moment basis is a very nice feeling indeed. As a rule my Emails are PGP encrypted between me and friends (even if its not sensitive) as are my ICQ communications. Just keep yourself buttoned down, and realize that giving out all your info to anyone who's kind enough to ask isn't the best policy, as much as we would all like the opposite to be true, everone is not neccisarily trustworthy, oddly enough, least of all our own government.

We, as a community, need to start pushing for donations for efforts like this, a common pool to collect funds for fighting back against the people that capitalize on the "divided we fall" methodology of crap like this. People too afraid of losing to someone who can afford a better class of attorney shouldn't be extorted for some other company to make a quick buck. If even just the slashdotters contributed to a fund of this sort we could probably make a difference. Letting these guys fight it out on their own will do nothing but make this brand of theft more and more popular as other groups see the effectiveness with which it works.

Thanks for the most irrelevant post I have ever read. Where the hell did the "Linux has a business plan" shit come from? I don't care if you will stick around or not, my post had 0 to do with that, my post was about the retardedness of posting drivel like that on the front page then expecting ANYONE from the MS camp to give you, or your OS of choice the time of day.

You know, of all the people I know who refuse to read Slashdot, EVERY one of them cites the immature constant bashing going on as the main reason why they do not read this site. And posting that crap on the main page just makes it worse. Oh and for the record, the company that makes those laptops also sells a Tower designed by Porsche, however the good features stop there, it's nice they included RAID arrays in some of their high end machines, and ALL their motherboards (even the low end) supported RAID, but the systems themselves got rather flaky. So "might make it harder" is moot, this "new" version is already DoA. What's even MORE interesting is that the only way MANY of us have been able to get the game to work is to used the cracked .exe....turns out SecuROM is screwing up the game.... What fun! In all honesty, that will NEVER happen to DTV. Granted it's isn't exactly rocket science to do some of the crap that these DSS hackers do, but still, the levelof knowledge required provides no small level of trepedation for your average user, and with outages and everything else,it's not likely that even a large portion of the people watching their signal will pirate it. It's just not worth it to most people to lose TV for days at a time while they wait for a new fix, yadda yadda, they just want TV, free is good, but hassle isn't.... For the record, DTV has long since stated that 5% or less hacking is completely acceptable, because thats where their stockholders stop caring, hence, DTV stops caring also. With the recent removal of the H stream they cut down their numbers DRAMTICALLY, new hardware has to be bought, etc. etc. it's a whole new, more complicated game. They are FAR from worried about going broke.

Case in point, I downloaded the Christina Aguillera song Dirty (I know I know, its just so damned catchy, I hate it), I would lop off several of my own apendages before I would throw away my money on one of her CD's, however, that song, for whatever horrific reason, stuck in my head and I like to listen to it. Bear in mind that this is the same song I can pop a tape in the radio and copy off the radio and playback to my hearts contents. But they say that I cannot take this same song, download it in MP3, and listen to it that way....why????

All stupidity aside, every cause needs funding, to say you shouldn't fund a cause because there are other, better causes out there is kind of silly.

So nobody should fund anything that isn't as life threatening as cancer, which means all our space programs, weapons programs, telecommunications programs, everything, should halt, because we could be spending that money on Cancer research, or AIDs research.... Somehow I don't think so.

I get the jist of your comment but somehow think it's a bit overdoing it to say that it's not a worthwhile cause.
