Why you buy a mobile phone "on contract" in the UK, the terms and conditions that come with the airtime contract specifically separate the performance of the phone from the airtime contract.
So that if the phone is crap, you can't use it as an excuse to get out of the airtime contract.
If you ask for your phone to be unlocked most providers will do it but you are still committed to the the airtime contract and may have to pay for unlocking.
There's going to be some interesting court claims around this if they really try to do this.
If we're going to compare taxes, you've also got to include the health care costs - in the US you pay it directly whereas in the EU it's included in our taxes...
And even with our universal heathcare I'm sure we could cope with plenty of tax cuts in the UK
The BBC seems to have taken a decision to go down this route long before 'Apple got a big content provider to agree to a different distribution method to broadcast TV'
Although I currently have to pay the TV license I can't get hold of any of the BBC's digital channels (don't get Freeview and can't have a Satellite dish)
The idea of content that self destructs after 7 days is annoying, my Tivo doesn't do this so why should content downloaded from the BBC (especially when it's DRM'd)
On the plus side I'm actually on the trial so will be having a play later.
As they're both mix albums and iTunes/iPod uses Track Artist as the artist field, under albums on my iPod I've got one Back To Mine listed with the tracks from both albums!!!
If it used Album Artist the two CD's could be seperated correctly (I know I can rename the albums in iTunes to sort this out but that's only a work around to Apple's error)
Most US journalists views are hampered by the lack of decent bluetooth products in the States (do I hear any of them saying irda is dead?).
Bluetook is the right technology for low powered devices that need to communicate over short distances i.e. replace wires.
For me the killer app isn't Palm or PC to Phone, it's the fact I can get in my car and my handsfree kit works with the phone still in my pocket, no cradles. Change the phone and the new one will work too.
Is there a really good discussion thread about Java and GPL anywhere ?
I think you could quite successfully argue that the dynamic linking facilities of Java allow you to come under the aggregation clause.
I had a look in gnu.misc.discuss and although the topic's raised it's head a few times no real discussion has developed. I know what RMS's opinion is but he seems reluctant to justify it when invited perhaps he realises Java has driven a hole through GPL.

Tesco's are one of the cheaper UK supermarkets and have pretty good quality food.
As someone who shops at Tesco's week in, week out - I can tell you they're one of the cheaper supermarkets and delivery pretty good quality food.

I'm also not the only person with this issue: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?50@142.liL
The iPod's a great product bit it's got some really sucky issues!
Andy
Any one know if they've added support for the 'album artist' field yet?
The iPod's a real pain when you're got two CD's of the same name and only 'album artist' differentiates them - WMP get's it right!
You can get them Commell certainly do one and there may be others. As usual Google is your friend.
The article states that "Microsoft promised "ongoing security updates" for all supported versions of Windows and IE."
All MS are doing is stating that the pop-up blocking and other new features in XP SP2 won't be made available to old OSs.

If we stopped subsidising our (US, EU & Japan)farmers so that they stopped dumping sugar, cotton etc. onto the world markets at below cost.
Then people in Mozambique etc. would be able to get a a sensible price for the goods they produce and make a living.
Instead of having a 'sucky' unzip the zip installer for FireFox can we have a decent one now?
It's not that they don't have a reverse gear...
It's that after they've put the tunnel linings in (stop it falling in) the TBM is too big for the tunnel behind it.
Same book different name...
Same book different title.
The Tivo service is still available and while you can't buy a new one, they sell on ebay for more than they cost new!!!
So dead I don't think so, but not as alive as I'd like them to be.
Big deal...
This 'top secret tracking" is available to consumers and companies in the UK see:.

Of course you need the phone owners permission.
therefore it can't work, be popular etc...

Perhaps Jobs has been reading FastCompany.
Current issue has an article on Apple and how they've screwed up in the past by trying to do everything themselves instead of licensing to others.

When Paxman cracked the joke about Bill saying to God "You're sitting in my chair" Bill was not amused.
Also Paxman's constant quibs about the amount of money Bill had got very annoying after a while.
