  1. Re:One of the things I find annoying... on Masters of Doom · · Score: 1, Interesting

Well, you are correct in saying that Wolf3D was first, but Doom was by far, more popular and widespread. There wasn't a kid in North America who hadn't heard of it, and Wolf3D, while being cultishly classic, was not nearly as well known. So, while it may have started the FPS genre, it Doom popularized it and made it mainstream.

How can the fact that the two Johns split up be a negative part of the book. I mean, would the book be better if it WEREN'T accurate, and lied about it? Of course not. That is just how things worked out, so I think it can hardly be seen as a negative aspect of the book.

  9. SETI@home on Distributed Computing Economics · · Score: 2, Insightful

The articles states that SETI@home has a whopping 54 teraflops of computing power. This is an unfathomable number of cpu cycles, and guess what, it is alled used FOR FREE! This is a great example of how a community of users is willing to sacrifice something (unused cpu cycles and small amounts of bandwidth) to meet some great future goal (contact with extraterrestrials). Did I mention it is FREE? I wonder how much money researchers could save or use in a better fashion if they all used distributed computing instead of expensive (super)computers. Some already have done this, and I know that there are distributed efforts currently processing ways to fight cancer and aids.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this yet, but a tablet pc may be the way to go, if you must have diagrams and easy to write notes and lectures. Despite all of this "nerdy" behaviour, I have yet to be beat up over it. Some friends of mine jokingly call me the nerd of nerds, and there are a few stoners who'll punch me in the hallways before going out for some more pot, but other than this, life in high school is not too bad.

It's true. Andy Serkis did act out each of Gollum's scenes during principal photograpy (he was on the set, doing acting in place of the CGI, but doing what it was to do). After this, he went over each scene a second time! This second time was for the motion capture. During all of this, each of Andy's actions were used to make Gollum's actions. I see no reason why this is different from acting with a costume or mask on.

There is a big reason for this, and Lucas has already identified it. Back in the original trilogy, we never really got to see a Jedi fight in the prime of his life.
