That's how I got my entree into writing about Linux. Programmers are very smart, but not very eloquent and they are also very poor teachers.

There are any number of rules and guidelines for writing documentation, most of which are ignored since documentation is often the red-headed stepchild of the project.

Documentation should tell a story clearly and help the reader understand the 'why' and 'how' as well as the 'what'.

Much as the Rule of Holes is "If you find yourself in a hole, first stop digging", the Rule of Secrets should be "If you're doing embarrassing things you feel the need to keep secret, first stop doing them."

  17. Giving Notice on Ask Slashdot: When Is It OK To Not Give Notice? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Many years ago, I used to co-own a restaurant. A sous chef who had worked for us two years gave two weeks notice that would have him leave the day before Mothers Day for a "better opportunity". Since he was an employee in a key position, it would take longer than two weeks to interview, hire and train somone at his level. We asked if he would stay through Mothers Day (so just one more day and we'd pay him double time for that day) since we only had him and the chef (the other owner) to cook and it would place a huge burden on the chef. He declined.

It turned out that he did not have another job but just wanted to avoid working on Mothers Day (the busiest and most harrowing day in the industry). While I never gave him a bad reference (he was an excellent employee), he could not find a job in town because the kitchen staff talked about his day-before-Mothers-Day departure to their friends in other restaurants; they were pissed at him. He finally moved out of town to find employment.

MORAL: Leaving like a douchebag never pays off like you think it will.

  24. Re:The hypocrisy of US on Bahrain Activists Battered By IP Tracking Attacks · · Score: 2

The Monarchy of Bahrain, has again and again, committed crimes against the civil population. Unlike other Arab nations, little or nothing is said in corporate media or by the US Gov. officials, simply because the Bahrain monarchy is an "ally" that allows an US military base in their soil.

I suspect that there's very little pressure from the US government to not print these stories, it's just that the editorial board does not find it relevant or interesting to the targeted demographic of the media's advertisers.

It's simply that news coverage of the death or oppression of thousands of non-US citizens does not boost circulation nor sell cars or burgers.

    Sad but true.
