Good for you for not buying CDs. It would be great if millions more consumers would show their disdain for the major labels by keeping their money. I am not advocating stealing, just boycotting an industry that deserves no customers. http://www.dontbuycds.org

What Is Public Domain?
·
· Score: 2, Informative
An idea, once expressed belongs to the world, aka, the public domain. Copyright was invented as a way to temporarily allow creative people to profit from expressing their ideas in writing, song, etc. Unfortunately, copyright has become a nearly permanent thing to enrich greedy corporate robber barons at the expense of the public domain, which soon may be a footnote in history Hollywood, the RIAA et al are trying to convince legislators that copyright is a natural right. I sure hope we can stop them, but since we can't grease palms the way the corporations do, it won't be easy. http://www.dontbuycds.org http://www.uncov eror.com/radio.htm
If the US government would switch to open source software, it would save billions of taxpayer dollars. This should have been done the day Microsoft claimed that it's source code must remain secret because it is so flawed that revealing it could threaten national security. At my employer, we just configed a huge order of IBM desktops and notebooks for the USDA Forestry Division. Each one had Windows 2000, and other Microsoft apps. How much did all that cost American taxpayers? Way too much I am sure.
Superconductors have to be extremely cold to work. I have seen them demonstrated with liquid nitrogen. Until they can work at more reasonable temperatures, their practical use will be limited. They are still really neat, though.
You can always make a living supporting users of software, and creating things with software. If money is John Carroll's only motivation, then he needs to get out of computer programming. People who jump into computers just to get rich couldn't find their ass if you gave them a map to it. I suggest robbery as a new profession.
The trolls take the fun away. I used to have an Unreal Tournament server offered up to anyone who wanted to play. I called it Uncoveror's UT. The cheaters made it no fun. When one of them put a remote access trojan on my server, and I found it, I closed it down. Do these kids think they're funny?
The good old days are a myth. They are something people imagine when looking through the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia. When old folks look back at the days when they were naive children, unaware of the dark side of the world, they mistakenly think the world did not have a dark side "in their day." This generation is no worse than any before it. As for computer related ethics being a couse of study, current events have always been courses of study in academia, but not very useful ones. You can't go to an ivory tower and study the real world to understand it, you have to live in it.
A co-op for DSL! I love it. This reminds me of the Community Antenna Television co-ops that created cable TV. Too bad corporations turned that into a money grab scam. I used to get my electricity from a co-op before I moved, and service was cheaper and more reliable than from those crooks at Cinergy. If the co-op turned a profit, I got a profit sharing check at the end of the year. Someone has proven that neccesity is the mother of invention, not just the potential to get filthy rich. I wish all utilities were available from co-ops and not corporate robber barons who gouge me.
Wow! An actual fun extra-curricular activity that is not just for the jocks. It is good that the school is doing this, but some killjoy will probably make them stop. Usually all the "freaks and geeks" get at school is bullying.
That's a good point. I bet that they are not warned on the outside of the box I hope enough consumers take the damn thing back if this is the case that retailers stop carrying it.
Netware is dying because it is an earth-native technology. Unix is far superior because it is based on the computers found on the Roswell UFO. It is light years beyond netware! http://www.uncoveror.com/aliens.htm

Dear NASA: Leave the red planet alone, or we will really provoke them this time!
If consumers don't like this policy, they should not buy a replaytv. If enough consumers avoid the device, sonicblue goes belly up, and the producers of other personal video recorders won't try this crap.
People whining for "Unbiased news." Really just want the news reporters to agree with them. Right wingers say the news has a leftist bias. Left wingers say the news has a right wing bias. When the news reinforces our preconceived notions and prejudices, we call it "unbiased." The truth is that no human being can ever be truly unbiased. Anyone who doesn't get that is smoking crack. By the way, do you anti-porn crusaders realize that babies come from people having sex? It may spoil your innocence to read this, but the cabbage patch and the stork are myths. Without sex, none of us would be here.
I agree that Time-Warner AOL blows, but "poor Disney"? They are a bunch of thugs that harass day care centers and schools for painting Mickey on the wall without coughing up the moolah! I sure hope the supreme court overturns the Sonny Bono copyright extension so Mickey Mouse does go public domain. Then Michael Eisner can't harass day care centers or schools anymore.

Homogenized Music

· Score: 1
Homogenized corporate radio is a prime example of what deregulation does to any industry. One they aren't under a watchdog anymore, greed takes over. Instead of providing a valuable public service for profit, profit becomes their sole reason for being, and their products and services go to hell. Next comes merger mainia. Soon there are a few huge companies bogged down with debt dying like Enron, worldcom, and soo, clear channel. Maybe when they finally do croak, the old radio that was worth listening to will return.
Calling half empty Cartridges "Economy" is deceptive. Cusotmers think it's economical for them, but it's actually economical for Hewlett-Packard-Bell. This exactly what should be expected from a notorious corporate raider like Carly "The Hatchet" Fiorina.
Spiderman and Star Wars in the Same Month!! The only way to top that would be nude pics of Lara Croft. The fanboys came up out of their mothers' basements twice in May. Maybe while they are out in the sun, they will notice that there is a world beyond their mothers' basements and chat rooms. May be they even meet a real girl!
Lucent has not been the only company in the news giving me reason to distrust the stock market. Consider Oracle, Enron, Worldcom, HP. Also, brokerage firms such as Merill Lynch are under investigation for pushing stocks they knew were bad, defrauding investors. With publicly traded companies and brokers, the so-called experts, telling investors what they want to hear in order to take their money, I think my comparison of the stock market to the race track is a valid one.
Fake reports, shredding documents, bribing legislators with campaign "donations:" There is nothing big business will not do to grab money. It is upsetting, but not suprising. Business today is so dishonest that investing in stock is a bigger gamble then going to the track, and playing the ponies.
The Chinese want a moonbase, but their rockets keep blowing up. Maybe NASA could sell them the plans for an X-4000 launch apparatus!

That would save them money, and prevent rocket disasters.
I personally know that A+ will get you no more than a ten or eleven dollar per hour job, so unless you want to do repair for next to nothing, don't waste time with that one. The sad truth is that management desk jockeys think any chimp can do computers. Techies are held in lower esteem then auto mechanics. We really need a union.
You may have to take a job out of IT until you make some contacts. It's usually WHO you know that matters. If you get desparate, "Fries with that" isn't a question, you are telling them.
All movies, books, plays, etc. have familiar elements. There are a few basic great stories that we constantly retell from generation to generation. If lucas can tell a better story by bowwowing from others, why not. That's been the way it's done since cavemen told stories to each other around the fire at night.
I loved attack of the clones. Those who view it as inferior to the first trilogy are looking at Those three throught the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia. Compared to chilhood memories, nothing today can compete. Let's not buy into the myth of the good old days.
Think about it. As kids, we were easily amused. The first three did not have academy award worthy acting either, but star wars in all five movies is timeless storytelling. I sure hope this one out-grosses the lame silly chick flick Titanic. I can not wait for Episode III!
The lone gunmen are dead. In order not to be seen as un-american, Chris Carter dropped them. In this current environment of jingoism and self worhip in the wake of 9-11, as we all grieve and try to heal our wounded souls, three geeks fighting government conspiracies are not politically correct. The first episode of their show was about government forces intending to crash a plan into the WTC, and blame it on terrorists, in order to bring back the military-industrial complex's cold war era profitability. Having seen that made 9-11 surreal! I could not believe that it actually had happened. To avoid giving conspiracy nuts ideas, Carter kicked our favorite conspiracy uncoverors to the curb. He doesn't want to be called to congress for the next round of Mcarthyite hearings when opportunistic politicians try to claim that there are pro-terrorist people in Hollywood.
