Can I get in the class-action suit even though I got bored and stopped playing WoW three days into the 10-day trial? They owe me money for ruining those few hours with a typically boring MMO!!!
Really? They're out there? Please tell me where they are.
I used to play "Galaxies" until they took all meaning from the game. As for "City of Heroes", "Guild Wars", "WoW" and the upcoming "Auto Assault" and "Dark and Light", they're all the same game with different shells. Do missions, bash little critters, get exp, rinse and repeat. I have hope for "Burning Seas" just because it is about pirates, but it is a limited hope.
I think there are many more enjoyable single-player games, RPG or not. At this point, I'll only do betas and limited free passes for MMOs. They're simply too boring and redundant and boring and redundant.
Most of the comments have concerned Toad and the effect that this release will have on it. Since I haven't gotten my grubby, little hands on Oracle's product yet, I had a question about how much of a Toad-killer this really is.
It seems obvious that it will do the same thing as Toad's basic front-end does, but there's more to Toad. What about the procedure editor in Toad? Is there something like that in Oracle's? The other question is the SQLab tie-in from Quest. I use that as a one-step tuning destination when dealing with other people's reports. Anything like that?
Without all the parts, I'm not sure that this will be supplanting the collection of Quest software that I'm currently using.
On a recent trip to Baltimore, I ended up staying in a hotel with one of those $10/day internet fees (bastards). After cursing while the laptop was booting up, I promptly found seven open networks that I could use. bte - Thanks for the bandwidth, "Zeus".
Obviously, I have no real issue about borrowing some bandwidth when I need it. I do try to be polite, however. Checking emails, a couple websites to keep up on news, and then I disconnected. Sure, I could have listened to some internet radio, fired up a couple chat programs and logged into a mmorpg but I feel that would have been rude. Sure, in a coffe-house, but not someone's personal network. If you're going to be an uninvited guest, at least be a good one.
Although the first computer I ever programmed on was a Commodore PET (LOGO was the "language"), the first computer ever in the house was the Vic 20 -- with the glorious 23 characters per line!
As for the programming, I agree 100%. I remember programming a "hangman" game in BASIC with my Dad. Sadly, we parted ways after that: he stayed with RPG-2 while I went to JAVA and PL/SQL.
I agree wholeheartedly. WP is one of the highlights of the internet at this point in time, imho. Like most aspects of the internet, it is also very young. The recent attention it has gotten will do two things: Increase its use and force it to mature -- both of which will be welcome developments.
1) always double-check everything. I know that this has been stated before in every discussion concerning Wikipedia, but it is worth repeating.
2) The formula for accuracy that has always existed for Wikipedia still applies. The more people looking at an entry, the better the chance for false statements to be identified as such and corrected.
3) Vandals will always exist -- whether they are 12 year-olds getting giggles or Congressional staffers applying spin. The difference is that they will get bored and leave while people who care about Wikipedia will stay.
If anyone thinks that this is a Wikipedia issue, you should go back and read yesterday's story about censorship on NASA's website.
For faster/easier protection, would it be effective to tar/rar/zip the files up? I'm thinking specifically for the non-tech friends of mine that I was warning.
At least they don't own female cats. I'd be happy to send you a recording of the noises my "girls" make at 2:00am while fighting, but it wouldn't have the same effect that it does during rem sleep.
... I'm happy that I'm not involved with any MMORPGs any longer. It isn't just the redundant game-play and 1337-d00dz that I don't miss. It is the constant, high-pitched, whining/b!tching/moaning that comes from the player-base any time anything happens.
Now/. is becoming infected with the feckless whining of game forums. Great. Can't we get back to rational and interesting discussions about Microsoft and the RIAA?
I've been carefully cultivating the bacteria on my keyboard for years! They've just started on communication. I'm hoping to have them up to written language in the next year. Then, we'll start on logic. With any luck, I should have my own civilization of microscopic coding assistants by 2011!
Nice thought. Unfortunately, BellSucks -- er, BellSouth is the only telecarrier available here. Sure, I could switch to the cable company (and I'm considering it after this crap), but that would mean leaving my local ISP like.
That leaves me with the following options:
1) Really good ISP that goes through really bad BellSouth
2) Bad cable company.
Of course, if I hadn't just signed a 2 year sat TV contract, I'd be tempted to switch everything to cable, but that won't happen for a while now.
My recent strategy has been to purchase CDs directly from the artists at their shows. Not only are they making some cash from me at the shows, but frequently they have their older albums on sale as well as cases of their current work.
Does this mean the label is totally out of the picture? Maybe not, but sometimes. I have purchased "pirated" CDs from the artists themselves because the f'ing label didn't think it worth their time to make more.
Sure this won't work for the FOTM pop bands, but I don't listen to that junk anyway. Big bands like the Rolling Stones? Local used CD stores and discount racks, baby. I plan on doing all I can to give as little as possible to big labels.
In the earlier discussion about this case (yes, I'm too lazy to go look for it again) someone suggested a legal attack on SunnComm for illegally installing software on computers. Since I'm not rushing out to buy whatever CD this is, does anyone know if there's a warning on the CD? Anything that informs the user that software is being installed? Anyone at the EFF who'd be interested in this train of thought?
I'd be willing to buy the CD and document that in installed software on my computer and appear as a witness if they want to go after SunnComm.
... is for someone to hack a major election. By setting 100% of the vote to some obscure candidate, a very clear message about the validity and security of these voting machines will be made crystal clear.
hmm... do they use these in California?
Maybe a Myst movie could have a chance -- provided that the production has NOTHING to do with their Dune movie. Considering the astoundingly poor acting, total abandonment of the concept of water management (key on a desert planet), and poor green-screen technique, I barely made it through the movie once and have yet to watch the video tape I recorded during the broadcast.
I'll probably watch the Myst movie if/when it comes out, but my expectations aren't very high. They should stick with the traditional series concept.

I think it is also safe to skip anything that has the same character repeated more than three times or suffers from caps-lock:
PLEEEEEEEEASE READ!!!! THIS IS REALLY REALLY REALLY COOOOOOOOL!!!!111!
The Washington Post also has an article on this
Some day, I'll remember to put the break tags in my first posting of the day. /yawn

Imagine all the delays that could be avoided if all the cars stopped when the light turned red.
Was the problem with her or your ISP?

America is a Republic, btw. Hence the line in the Pledge of Allegiance: "...and to the Republic for which it stands..."

More like 'Disgust and Sicken' given the effect that it is having on the majority of people in the world. I'm ashamed to be American today.
