You keep referring to SDL like it's another graphics API? It's not really, it has some 2d capabilities but just serves to initialize OpenGL, it doesn't do anything 3d itself.
It may be a side effect that stops improbable schemes like yours, but lets be honest, nobody 'stocks up' on stuff like that, the day the disaster hits they go and buy out the store so no one else can get one, THEN they sell them for $500 each. thats why those sort of laws are in place,
Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God, You caught a *TYPO*!! ON THE INTERNET! You are my HERO, Can I have your autograph? Sign my arm! When is your next book "More Typo's I found on the Internet" coming out? I can't wait to read it! your work is always so interesting and useful!

Yeah sorry, It's late and nitpick stuff like this has been driving me nuts all week.
I'm fairly sure there are not 100mbit cards for ISA, I know there are billions of 10mbit ones, but I didn't think the ISA bus could manage 100mbit throughput...
Generally, because the big guy's are cheaper. It's the economics of scale or something like that, I dunno, What am I an economics.. studying... person... ANYWAYS, most often you get better hardware for cheaper from a big guy than a local shop. Don't get me wrong though, the local shop has someone you can bring it in to when it catches on fire, and someone who you can actually yell at face to face, or throw stuff at (I worked at a local place for a year or so while in highschool).
last time I looked the price difference was around $200 between assembling a computer yourself, and getting an equal dell. but that changes around a lot depending on where you get your local parts, and again now that dell is refunding windows apparently.
Also, with the money saved you can just throw your computer out after three years (Or turn it into a file server, or better yet donate it to a community group that will probably find a good use for it) and buy a new one. Yes you can use linux on bare scraps of hardware, by why fight with a computer? having modern hardware makes it so much more enjoyable to use your computer.
there are more costs associated with running an ISP than just cable, though thats a huge part of it, now IF the local government manages to declare this, which I have no idea how likely that is, There are huge other costs to get up and running, and then your trying to stay competitive with these other companys who have been in the business for years.
You make it sound like anyone can just push a few buttons on their home PC and make the internet free for all again, There's a lot of reasons things aren't as golden and rosy worldwide in this area, It's a nice hope and maybe a possibility, but don't just shrug it off and say people should go start their own ISP like it's nothing, it's just not not that easy.
Hey great plan ace! then the next time he wants to post on/. he can just wander down to the local library and use their computers! How Convenient! It's a good thing he stuck it to the man and showed them what he thought of the lack of competition!
I would imagine it's because slashdot is pretty centered around discussion of posted articles, the questions are in theory supposed to spark discussion about an article. Sadly most of the questions are stupid and people ignore them and ramble on about other stupid and pointless shit.
I would hope they would make them easy to identify and track, Imagine stumbling upon some weird robotic beasty that washed out of a storm drain and thinking it's the beginning of the robot revolution or something, Maybe they could just write "NOT EVIL" in magic marker or something, that would make ME feel better.
bleh, I used to keep a putty window open to monitor stats on every server I managed, but I took some time and wrote up an snmp script that I hooked into a web interface, now one webpage with an autorefresh of 20 seconds keeps me in the know about all my servers and takes up a ton less room, using colour changing table cell's means when something goes wrong it catches my attention a lot faster too.
Wasn't Johnny #5 a military robot? as in, designed to kill SOMEONE if not all of mankind? It was just a fluke that he became self aware and went the other way (Kind of unlikely really:P)
As well, Imagine getting in an accident, You'd get electrocuted, then a picture of your mangled electrocuted self would get e-mailed out onto the net. Not the most dignified way to go, (Or possibly worse, survive!)
thats usually done in application logic, not through packet shaping/redirecting,
The problem here is the illegality and absurdity of the drug war.
Yeah, That's the problem with people hacking the 911 system to dispatch SWAT teams, good call.
Just so you know you're not alone, I preferred the Dirk Gently books to HHG2G as well,

Yeah! That'll teach them to pay for your phone calls in an opt in service!

I use words like beseech once in a while... I think it adds flavor and variety to language, there are a lot of fun words out there to play around with

Some of the best software for design, functionality and 'pretty' code that I've seen is Ogre3d, a cross platform rendering engine, It's hawt...

Fuck thats nitpicky, but I just had to say it.
I read his translation because it was a lot shorter.

well, I would think most of those parseres use regex's, so I Guess it really depend on what you are doing...
Have you ever actually TALKED to an AOL customer? Do you think many of them are even aware this happened? do you think they care?
what's next, stopping the delete button from functioning when it's an advertisement?
I have to say, that's probably the most chilling thing I've read in a long long time.
I think regardless of the data recovery issues, lighting a thermite charge on an airborne plane would be a bad idea.
whoa, for a second there I thought you were linking to such a card,
