At the risk of being modded troll, what innovation? All of the tech that powers these sites was built by other people. The only thing these guys did is get enough capital to fend off lawsuits.
I guess what really bugs me about these ride share guys is the real reason they're so big: massive unemployment and 40 years of declining wages. People don't participate in ride share sites for fun. I know taxi and limo drivers. They're some of the most abused people in the world. They're 'independent contractors' only in so long as it involves not getting the benefits of being employees (unemployment insurance, heath care, etc).
Fix the broke ass economy and all this 'innovation' would go away tomorrow. Christ, $16 billion in ipo value build on the corpse of the American Middle Class.
Yep, it's a by product of the military industrial complex that's been propping up our economy since the end of WWII. Since we couldn't have socialism we just built lots of army vehicles. And that means lots of surplus and a heavily militarized police force. I don't think anyone really planned it, it's just one of the twisted distortions from our way of keeping the economy going...
when the riots hit LA people were surprised that the rioters stuck to their own neighborhoods and basically trashed their own communities. What nobody mentioned was the reason why. Large numbers of armed police cordoned off the wealthy neighborhoods and kept the looters from spilling over.
It's not so much the ruling class here, as the upper class. Even the upper middle class. Basically, if you're going to abandon the poor the their fate you need to build walls to keep 'em out...

This is basically the beginning of the end of Credit Card fraud. For all we love to romanticize hacker thiefs the reality is that in 10 years big data + cheap powerful handheld computers + geolocation will make it damn near impossible to commit. The only thing holding it back was that it was cheaper to let the fraud happen. With computing power getting cheaper and more common place that's not true anymore.
I think it's more about corps not wanting to pay for security. If you just drop the hammer and drop it hard people get the message. Sure, they'll still be attacks (lots of desperate ppl in today's economy), but they'll be fewer. Mean time to failure is important. People are already forgetting about Target, but if those sorts of attacks were monthly companies would have to do something about them.
Also, the nice thing about using brutal sentencing to slow the pace of attacks is the cost shifting. The Taxpayer foots the bill to put that guy away for life. If you let them do it Businesses will always shift costs onto the commons and profits onto themselves.
It's only a matter of time. Give it 5, maybe 10 years. Immigration reform means 300,000 new H1-Bs, and most studies show that for every H1-B officially given away there are 3 to 4 of those guys actually working. You didn't think they were sent home, did you?
So, what are you going to do in a few years when 1 million new tech workers (all younger than you, cheaper, and who work more hours) hit the market? You'll do absolutely nothing. You'll be too busy keeping your head above water to. Which is exactly what they want.
One last thing. Doctors have Unions (AMA). Lawyers too (it's called the Bar). If your having trouble understanding why a skilled worker would want a Union ask yourself why Doctors and Lawyers have them:).

Basically they don't pay taxes on their profit from the monthly subscriber fees they collect. Verizon does this too. In fact the just got caught in New Jersey impersonating voters to push through a bill that exonerated them from building out the network they promised to build in exchange for 6 billion worth of tax subsidies. It worked out to something like $10k per resident paid to them for nothing. Oh, and that bill? It passed.
How does making the handsets in China reduce the cost to ship them to American customers? Seriously. Are there some odd shenanigans or something here? otoh, I can't imagine how any company can compete with the kind of wages you can get in the Philippines and China. The time to market thing woulda been nice since they could beat Apple or Samsung to the punch, but then Motorola's engineers and marketing didn't really have the punch they needed:(.
The Steam Machine was just a shot across the bow at Microsoft. The Windows 8 Store threatened to squeeze Valve out of the software sales market. Gabe Newel's Ex-Microsoft and he knows as well as anybody how they operate.
When Win8 flopped harder than a beached whale and the Store flopped harder still they almost immediately laid off the engineers they hired to build the darn thing. These days it's mostly just a curiosity.

another way is to say that automakers are shifting their costs. Dirty air and smog lead to lung disease and cancer, ergo higher medical costs. The health problems also lower worker productivity.

Toyota & Honda, heck even GM, can all make zero emission cars. I do like what California did though. They set _sales_ qoutas_ instead of manufacturing qoutas, so they companies couldn't weasel out of getting real zero emission cars on the road. It's rare to see regulations that have teeth in them. I suppose with the amount of Smog California has (insert South Park Smug jokes here) that's pretty important though. But I wish Arizona would do it. We have days when you're not suppose to go outside because the smog is so bad...
it's almost like having a company with a virtual monopoly on online sales is a bad thing. But hey, you don't _have_ to shop at Amazon, right? Not yet anyway... And they certainly wouldn't use their massive size to undercut all competition while making razor thin profits that no mom and pop could possibly sustain. And besides... Americans don't shop only on price, right? Boy, there are so many good reasons not to regulate here I can't pick just one.
despite all the jokes you've heard we're pretty damn resilient and it takes a surprising amount of effort to kill us. The trouble is once you start killing someone our bodies will rebel (trying to get us to get away from whatever it is that's killing us). That's pain in a nutshell.
There aren't a lot of ways to kill a man without significant pain. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or ignorant.
Now, a better question is why are we still killing people when at least 4% of ppl killed are verifiable innocent? I guess it's cheaper than dealing with the lawsuits for false imprisonment.
If someone from my country rips me off then there's a chance local law enforcement will do something. The nightmare that is international jurisdiction means they won't bother for China.
Also, stealing $100,000 USD in America is a nice haul, but not really enough to risk as much jail time as it'll get you for actively scamming that many people. In China $100k goes a lot farther, so it's more practical.

back in the days of Win 98 it was loads more stable, faster, and it used all my hardware.
With XP, Microsoft got it mostly right and with 7 SP 1 they fixed it. Yeah, Vista and 8 suck, but you don't have to run those. So until Win 7 drops support I can't think of anything practical I _get_ with Linux besides a kick ass shell. I do like Bash though. But I'll run some Linux in a VM for that.

when I can pretty easily get a dual core i5 for $400? Or if I care about battery life a single core i3 for $299?
I can't help but wonder if these products are just HPs way of saying to Microsoft that they have alternatives to Windows.

In the states and around the world guns are pretty easy to trace. A lot of crimes are solved on ballistic evidence. 3D Printed guns do away with that.
