What we need is more westernized grown anime.. Where as you said there is a cultural difference, not to mention those dialogues would turn any average joe/hillbilly into a laughing frenzy. American anime (Spawn..looosly..) is a darker, more mature variety. I don't want to see girls getting handled by an 8 tounged demon, I want to see a dramatic plot with amazing animators and amazing characters/development. US dialogue translations have just never quite cut it, and I'm a huge fan (of course exceptions do exist). The only other thing that always gets me is those moments of sillyness, where a character just buggers out with big cutsie crap... the reason I can never watch a full tenchi epsiode without getting revolted.
I was going to add to that, beign a US person a lot of Euro places are not able to use paypal effectively (remember that ol, verify by address crap). They seem to love wiretransfers even though they seem to cost us around 15$ to do.. pain in my ass.
Some enterprising individual needs to unify all of that.
I'm not sure.. I think its a basic economical thing. Its the same thing as a legacy system. How much money do they have vested in oil technology.. billions. The beast has to survive until it can fiscally show that moving to another energy would be better.
I firmly believe energy corps/oil corps/whateva, are working on the next solution, its just still a toddler compared to its oil laden legacy.
I'm not going to drag this into a rant.. but wouldn't you just see the film to see a possibly good film? What if you hadn't read the book, what would you think.. Its an interpretation of the book not the book. Its rare to ever see a novel realized into a movie there is just too too much that is interpreted through our individual imaginings.
Now I understand you're looking for a 1:1, but I'd still see it. Release the anxiety..;)

I'm not going to get into it about being able to surf without a watcher.. being the guy who watches and all that;) but I like knowing where I go is my business and not my superior's.. invasive privacy vs corporate policy.. bah.. each man for himself.
The posting bit I don't get.. but surfing I can. Also I think of it this way.. You have smokers and non smokers.. I'm no longer a smoker but smoking and in my office takes up at least 20 some damn breaks a day.. now the non smokers don't really like the idea that 20*15mins equates into good breaks.. Well.. any time I surf where I want I consider it a portion of my 'smoke break'.. so theres a little perspective.
to is this.. Communication.. In any circumstance those who do not communicate effectively lose. What you'll find is most 'stupid' people are really just people who do not listen, or think too much of their own words.
Stupid people exist in all professions. As a race at least 90+% of people are idiots. I've yet to work for a company that doesn't have an idiot for a boss, nor yet seen a company without at least one primodana engineer.
If your full of sh*t to begin with, you're not going to listen.. REALLY listen to others opinions because you're too judgemental already.
Open minds, good reserach, well thought out plans and executed strategies will give you the best survival ratio out there.

Ps.. Schooling really doesn't matter.. School gives you a foundation of knowledge. I've had little schooling but I've been a magazine cover artist to Manager to Director of technology.. Its all about how you apply yourself and having the will to get there.
To the average consumer.. I live in NC, and have a GF in SC, in both these states do you know how much rural population is a makeup for the demographic? Sure.. I can whip up a spare box in my home for an entertainment computer as well as run the cat5 around the house, or use the wireless, but the majority cannot.
We are geeksincarnate.. We build things, tinker with things, and bitch about everything. If we can hack it and make it better, wonderful, but remember the world was built for the generalist, and we are a minority in a largely unintelligent, untechnical world.
If I see you get out a handicap sign and start parking in the handicap spots, note that your car will be on fire soon.
If I see one more obease fat ass check into the handicap spot, when my friend with MS and I try and locate something not in BFE it irks me to high hell.
They need an obease-cap spot but make sure its in BFE the walk will do you good.
My job as an Admin is so diverse that I don't and can't keep everything in my head at all times. I've learned that my roll isn't to know everything, its to have a great response time for finding answers and implementing solutions.

Regardless of what you think, no country should tell me as an individual what the hell I can and cannot do. I am responsible unto myself, if I am responsible for hurting another, then I have myself to blame and should be punished accordingly. Also, sleezy shops, there are quite a handful of ugly shops, but its not like they spring out everywhere, there is a limited number and it stays that way.
Maybe something can change in a positive way.. but abandonment of an openness only paves the way for bad things.
Ahhh! Holy sh*t you talked about NWN hehe.. I got lucky during that time period, AOL messed up my account and I got all the hours I wanted for free.. then they had an issue with a player name and deleted my account.. was cool of them.. its ok though.. I got mine. hah..
These people have to realize that games are mocks of life.. People are stupid and cowlike in general.. There are those of us who know how to play a game and dominate it, in teamplay we are leaders or executioners, in solo we are fiesty as hell.
I play to win, I rally a team to dominate.. I get mad as hell at team killers.. oh I hate societies rejects..
I still play a MUD from occassion.. Still have wiz chars on a few of the top ones (Batmud anyone?;) ) I've helped run a slew of Mush's through the years those rock for RP..
Hey, and I'm 6'3, 205lbs, 7%bf.. You really wouldn't think I am who I am..
The world is cool, games are an extension of our imagination and I can't wait for the time to create my own corp to add to the bounty.
See this just pisses me off because I have been beta testing games since the early sierra days. The games are fun and all, but finding their holes and bugs, and knowing that I have a knack for breaking things people put before me is the awesome part. I feel as a consumer happy that I can draw up excellent bug reports to see a game come out in the end better for it.
If it spoils your enjoyment of the end product, then call yourself weak for not being able to wait for an end product.
This is why I like beta test screens and allow a general public technology test near the end.
The time and mentality setup you raise are the serious side of your response. I agree fully that if you were third-world, you under most probablilities not expect to have the luxury of having a computer whether in schools or the home.
However, if you insulted the how-to's, which are what I used to learn linux/unix. I was in fine arts and am now running the technical side of a company, I did it through document repositories and the help of others online. So if you can cross the hurdles of time, economy, getting online, and the ability to go forth with the challenge, then you can find the answers. It will just be hard. 8)
Unix was built for servers and is now being morphed into an end user machine because of the model it posesses. I don't know where Linux's future is, but its in my workplace, and in my home, but so is windows and mac.. They are all just tools.
I think this is a viewpoint, but one that should be analysed beside other views. To some degree we are still sleepers, a mundane nation living day by day in ones self and others problems. On the other point you've got those who are crossing bounderies helping others in ways we had never thought possible. Look at europe and the growing span of kiosks for web access, or Tokyo with the amazing cellular/data networks.
On the front of a poor country, what are we doing about it and how different is it from what we were doing before technology? During the 20's we thought we were kings, but reality hit us. Maybe the media could do a more justified approach to the problems of the world rather than create tantamount upheaveals which don't really exist. (case in point being watch the media talk about our current economic clime. Everyone from Fidelities ex pres to Greenspun himself are saying this is within normal bounds. Market correction, 15, 7, 2 year cycles of possible slows and gains, etc.)
We've got a long road to go, and due to technology it has the ability to shift much more readily, and much more apparently now. 5 years ago I thought I knew what was going to happen. Minor things like browser wars and such are easy to forcast, but where Internet2 begins and FTL communication come in, who knows. I follow a general Libertarian view, but are we ready for that much freedom? I feel I am, but by looking at all the worried day traders, they obviously have too much control.
Where are we going to be in 50 years. Severly poor countries ignored or snubbed by their neighbors? Will a global war for some resource take hold? Will space travel offer us anything but experiments, or can we use the moon as a resource? Will we find a better energy source, a more valid government, or shall we be relegated to a preindustrial age due to terrorism?
I don't know anymore, and you know what, I don't care. I'm living my life the best and most constructive way possible gaining whatever experiences I can along the way. That is what works for me. What I really wish is that we could legally cull the herd from time to time.
The business model the company I work for does is sponsorship. We offer a content based site that geographically specific charities can sign up for. They defer the cost through sponsorship. Therefore we are getting money to stay online and they and their constituants are getting all the content they can handle written by professional writers while a sponsor pays for it and gets recognition for doing so.
Why should the end user pay for anything, having a company who wants to be seen as the bringer of news is quite worthy. On top of this, if a content provider is providing any services based out of their content (as a smart one should) then you tack on micropayments to all your extended services. I think we have just begun to see a shaping of the net. Anyone who says they know this or that about whats going on, has about as much luck as a meteorologist.
If we do recede into a micro-payment time, I will avoid them like I do anything else I find distasteful. I don't want a bunch of microcharges popping up in my quicken.
Everyone talked about the wait but after timing, I was in and out in 10minutes.. woo.. I was sad to see so many representative slots with only 1 candidate, that was odd.. not enough libertarian or other parties on the bill.. My voice has been counted, even though the Libertarians will not win out, the seeds are sown.
"WAP just isn't for me, as it brings back the pay-per-online-time horror which I am so happy I could leave behind(cable-modem rules!)"
I use AT&T's pocketnet service which unlike sprint you can stay connected all day if you want and you get charged a flat rate. The service works well in most major cities and gives me enough of what I need from the web to get along just fine.
My friend and I were having similar discussions on a range of digital services. Telco's, Cell operators, Cable, are all pocketing big bucks on some simple services. Why isn't a phone company like an ISP? Pay a flat rate and get all the calling you want, its just packets right? DSL providers in my area want 225$ to hook you up, and all line speeds are unguarenteed..thats helpful. Cell companies, not much is different from the telcos.. why should you pay a premium for long distance when its being routed just like a local? Or ATM's, shouldn't you be getting money back by not using a human? Why do I have to pay 1-2$ per non-bank-demnominated terminal when its all run over the same network?
As a smart consumer I'm getting more and more aggitated that people who make enough goddamn money off you keep penny pinching you to the point of insanity.
I hate politics, I hate the greedy, and I hate the stupid... why must the world be populated by so many.
Not sure what kind of side note this is.. but babies are born every day with deformities, hearts outside the chest, ribs exposed, mal-digits..
I'm not a person who enjoys pain.. but evolution and enviornment cause it every day. Go jail the universe for being cruel.
bwhahahahah.. god that made me laugh.

Bullfrog uses you slappers for beta testing. There are a slew of game related companies that support the EU region.
On the total end of the stick, like anyone cares if someone can't participate in a 'beta' test.. You gonna cry for me? I'll play the violin.
