I'm still confused on the issue of why we are so eager to go to Mars when we don't even have a simple colony on the moon.. can't we do mineral harvesting there first? Or at least prove it can be done before we take such a long step?
O'brien photographed miniature models of Kong and the dinosaurs exposing one frame of film at a time and repositioning the model between frames so that when played in succession the models appear to move on their own. Sculptor Marcel Delgado constructed the Kong and dinosaur models using metal armatures or skeletons with ball-and-socket joints. He then covered them with rubber muscles and in Kong's case a skin of pruned rabbit fur.
.. how does that work? I was in best buy the other night and they have those fold down tv's that go in the central top console which is perfectly visible to the driver.. if it was made to go there and its visible to you as a driver.. you still get a fine?
I gotta think something like this is a little skewed..
Also don't forget seat belts were a lobbied effort to not get air bags in cars.. it should be a persons choice to wear or not to wear a seatbelt. There are also stats available through the National Motorist Assoc. that show that seat belts don't always save lives and those without have a good percentage of survival rate.. something that has now just become another revenue generator for your local county.. (ok.. no more ramble)
I dunno, back in the day (1982-/+) there were 4 kids in a big ol van, we'd go cross country and my dad rigged up an vcr and a minitv strapped down in the back (way before the times imo).
The canned programming he gave us was things like Puff the Magic dragon and Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis movies.. which I think has added to my appreciation of early cinema. You can't watch the tv the whole time and thats when I'd cut through those amazing choose your own adventure books ate through the entire robotech series.
So I think you can turn out just fine with some programming for those long drives. Kids should still understand fundamentals of reading, self entertainment, and participating with the family on a trip, but without that in our car, I guarentee we woulda stopped more for an ass beating to leave so and so along.
As a game designer and level designer I don't think you realize just how long, hard, and tasking it is to build a world. Building a generic terraformed landscaped is one thing, generating an interactive imagination where your dreams can live is truly a mission.
Take a look at any of the world builders today, Neverwinter has a robust creation kit that can in the end link you from one server to another, but go build one that doesn't suck. Tribes2 engine is sold for 100 bucks at garagegames.com for you to exploit and build your own game, its worldbuilder isn't the end all be all, but its pretty thurough and you can code whatever you can dream of into its source..
Any project that is to be born requires dedicated long term effort. I've yet to meet a 3 month project, most projects run in the years.
I've got a lot of metaverse ideas that have been on the board since the mid 90's and only now are we beginning to get closer to a platform (both local/wan/machinations) that can handle it.
I think the future has many untold glories that will surface, this one is a bit farther than closer due to the depth of work that would be required on the talent of the designed framework, and the authors/designers who will spend months if not years building a world that will offer something.
I just finished looking at Psion's site and I didn't find a netbook, Psion Refeerence Guide, doesn't show a PCMCIA slot.. I might be in the wrong section, but throw me another bone, if it used BT instead of IR that'd be a bonus too;)
I don't own digital cable, hell I don't even own a general box.. I just have basic cable and my road runner and a feed from one of my boxen to our entertainment system. My livein GF knows how to navigate Live365 and Shoutcast, picks genres and music that have to hands down beat out the music stations.
Its quality is radio to right below CD, which on most systems can't be told the difference, and for those I want to listen to on my Digital audio out card to my Mackie 8/24's I can find those stations as well.. It all depends but its out there and I save an extra 30 bucks/mo from an upgrade.
Broadband isn't understood until a user does it. Just because we do all these things, even that isn't a reason for broadband.. Like your mail and DNS take up much bandwith.. (beside the point) anyhow take my folks.. They think their computer is too slow for the internet, but they don't realize its their connection.. My father loves Braves games and checks in with their site when a game is on for replays and such, but it dragged ass and he thought the whole thing must just suck.. I got him broadband and viola, he is an online fool now chasing down things like never before. He admits he didn't corrolate the difference into how it actually impacted. My mom states away has the same thing to learn, she thinks she doesn't need it but complains about how slow everything is and wonders if it all is just slow or if its her or her computer.. Going from 5k down to 160k down is a gigantic difference and impacts the way one thinks about computing and surfing the net.. When the wait time is almost nil'd perspectives change.
The problem is no one understands it until their perspective does change.
Why is it when a person speaks of one party, you have to immediatly jump to its media induced opposite.
Been a card carrying libertarian for years, I'll never see the party come to the presidancy but I like their views a helluva lot better than either seat thats been in office.
No doubt. I was wondering what the prior author was speaking of when he went air vs stream.. I listen to streams all day at work.. hell if I can find one at 256k.. that'd be a dream.. then to make it stable so it doesn't hickup enroute or get garbled like so many do? Even with a 15 second buffer I still get packet drops and crap in the stream..
Sometimes radio is better.. ooh.. concept. heheh.
Now when I2 comes out.. in whatever future that is.. then we will see digital streams at digital pure quailities.. which my mouth and mackie 8/24's drool for. Until then, it pisses me off that the ruling made SOMA shutdown..
Well.. I gotta think your out of luck then.. The average joe doesn't even know what the hell Anime is nor what Trigun, Blue Seed, Lain, Sin, Eva.. etc etc.. and if they do think they know something of Japanese animation, they probably think its 3rd world..that being what it is you think major retailers are going to have an entire series of something? hah.. I wish. So we compromise and settle for what we have, which is above and beyond a good amount of main-to-nonstream ways of finding titles we like.
What the heck is wrong with a specialty store anyway? What if they were next to each other? If I want something special, I go to a specialty shop.. I cook gourmet meals, and guess what not many grocers carry the amount of mushrooms I like, nor spring leeks, nor vanilla beans, nor nishiki.. etc.. I goto a fresh market, I go to a farmers market, hell some foods I order online.. If I want a comic book I don't go to the newspaper/magazine section of Barnes'Noble, I go to a Comic store..
Don't be lazy, if you really want or your really into something, you get what you put effort into getting..
Btw.. Hollywood Video (rentals) has a huge selection of anime.. but YMMV.. thats local to Charlotte, NC;)
Another sad bit on Tivo is the inability to transfer that wonderful lifetime subscription. Getting that on my gen 1 box with no upgrade path allowed, yay! Let me go spend another 250 on the Tivo2 now.
You mentioned longevity, its like calling a boxing match before the rounds have started, its just a gamble and I don't believe the fat lady has sung yet.
Tivo is comprable in price because they sell out their plans to third parties then they extract more money from the individual as another cash flow. Its smart economics but as a smart consumer I don't appreciate lock-ins.
In the end, like I said before, I think someone will usurp both platforms in a few years, TiVo is way way way too slow on their programming and who knows how Replay will fair in the future.
I'm glad I have a PVR, but their can be better, its not rocket science. I wonder if someone like creative or other card vendors will come out with a settop extension that gives the end-user interface people bitch about not having right now.. that would kind of even the playing field for even the lightly computer literate.
Can you elaborate on this claim? I've got a Gen 1 Tivo, had one since the beginning. Its been hacked and upgraded.. I pay a subscriptions because I have to not because I want to. I never use their Network showcases or the TiVo spotlight crap.. the only thing I find useful from time to time is its ability to record shows it hypothesises you'd like; this feature is only valued when I've watched everything else I had..
I've been shopping lately and Replay's broadband sending of programs sounds swank to me, 30 sec jump, nice (although some Tivo modles can hack this one in), everything thing else is the same.. of course the lure was non-subscription.. so I guess now they are ALMOST on an even playing field.
What I'm waiting to see is when you have 120gb or greater drives in these machines, and you want to start keeping programs for longevity.. There is no aggrigation with the current file models.. no directories or tiers of shows/information. An open API from one of these bastards would be the end-all-be-all because there are never enough features and they take god awful long to code the most simply database queries into their releases.
I think TiVo is a step behind right now, but that'll always swing back and forth.. I'm just curious how they in your eyes win by a mile right now..
And Ewoks weren't annoying either.. They were cute cuddly little critters. Hell I think my mom still has one of my ewok stuffed animals somewhere in the attic. I even got the ewok village for christmas hehehe..
Jar Jar was overdone, should have been easy back played maybe.. but I'm just an opinion of which there are countless.
As a bodybuilder we only build muscle when we sleep. So if you are only getting a few catnaps in you are not going to have the repair needed to muscle fibres required to build or maintain mass.
For the ubergeek this might be fine but for atheletes I'm not sure I'd recommend it.
Or the why do I have to buy gas, I bought a car and I am required to buy from Exxon.
I don't mind paying for services rendered, but I like having the freedom to choose.
We would really like to have other sources of input. I don't think its worth 12.95 a month for a little data file on my basic cable services list. I can buy a tvguide for a buck and it killed a tree to get printed;)
Its like those big trucks that sling huge rocks out that read, 'We are not responsible for debris from our trucks.' BS.. They may say that but in court you still have to have responsibility. Someone's going to pay the bill for my crack'd windshield or dented hood. Could the same hold true for malicious behavior on your own personal property of a computer?
Now all they need is some automated voice to listen to me yell at them and then console and placate me with false apologies, and offers for better service at the next tier plan;)
I'm still confused on the issue of why we are so eager to go to Mars when we don't even have a simple colony on the moon.. can't we do mineral harvesting there first? Or at least prove it can be done before we take such a long step?

That'd be a great idea. I never knew that the cooktop I use is the same idea that powers the toothbrush I use.

Blueeetoothhh.. BTH.. Common.. Down with the cables!
I do this with everything.. but I use Tightvnc.. I pop up production servers, workstations, desktops..with little to no latency, on or off campus.
Suns got a good idea, but it can be done elsewhere through different mechanisms.

The CXX's view porn.. I can tell.. I'm the admin.. ;) The dev squad listens to MP3's while they code.. I built them a nice 80gb server..
;)
whatever it takes to keep productivity high right?
I agree. I've got some nice Mackie 824's and a DA to them, I can tell you almost all the qualities on those bad boys.
;)
Of course, if a CD was mastered like shit, then it'll still sound like 128

Then the networks encrypt their signal (which don't HDTV's have this) and we can't unencrypt it.
That'd suck.
