I'm thinking it's because Gravity is really more of a phenomenon than a "force." I know we talk about the "force of gravity" and "gravitational pull" and such, but those are just ways of describing what is happening. And the terminology often used confuses the issue.
Gravity represents a warping of space time generated by mass. Two bodies warp the space around them in such away that they "gravitate" towards each other.
If an object moving along a straight line passes by another object, its path will be affected. Not because the 2 objects are actually pulling on each other with a conventional force, but because the straight line itself is being bent by the warping.
There is no force that needs to escape in order to affect nearby mass.
In your example, you point out the seemingly "weird" phenomenon of a straight line curving back in on itself. This is an extreme example of what the warping can do. With the extreme mass of a black hole, these lines can be drawn rather large and still end up bending back in on themselves.
Heres another extreme example: You. Jump up and down. When you push off you are sending yourself in a straight line away from the planet. But the differential between your mass, and how hard you can push, and the earth's mass are so extreme that the earth bends your straight line back in on itself, and you return back to where you started.
Why does the space elevator need to be anchored directly to the surface of the planet? Wouldn't anchoring it to a zepplin like platform high in the atmosphere make the whole thing a lot easier to build? I mean that way you can cut out a sizable chunk of the "heaviest" part of the tether, and thus reduce the overall tension greatly. This would allow a much shorter tether since the spaceward end wouldn't need to extend nearly as far to hold up the drastically reduced weight.
You could use some high altitude balloon style craft to get cargo to and from the platform relatively cheaply.
Just seems like a better way to go than waiting for some mythical material that has the strength/weight ratio needed to support a fully to the surface tether.
To all those AMD fanboi's that cried "Why not AMD"? when Apple choose Intel, this is why.
Disclaimer: I have nothing against AMD, I like there fact there is healthy competition in the chip world. Makes for better/faster/cheaper products for us consumers.
Stories like this always make me wonder whether the people involved actually decoded the signals firing off in that guy's brain. I thinks it's more likely he learned to create the signals they were looking for.
Seems like it would make a hell of a lot more sense to put a bunch of (or one giant) solar reflector in the lagrange point between the earth and the sun. This is something that could be easily and finely controlled, face it fully towards the sun for full reflection. Twist it perpendicular and you get almost no reflection.
And it would probably cost less then putting a few million metrec tons of material in the upper atmosphere.
The light emitting from that galaxy is being emitted in all directions. No matter where we are in the universe or what time it is (unless some other object was blocking it) the light from that Galaxy has ALWAYS been shining on us. We just didn't notice it till now.
Since this galaxy is obviously very far away, it can be assumed that the clump of matter we're riding on and the clump of matter that makes up that galaxy shot out of the Big Bang at very different angles. Since we are moving away from each other at a very fast rate, every moment that passes means that light emited from that galaxy takes longer to get here then the light emitted just before. We have essentially been getting a "slow motion" view of this galaxy since the beginning of time.
Yea and throw out the pen and paper too. They should be writing with sticks in the dirt!!

It doesn't take anything more than your 2 steps to form a corporation, at least in Ohio.
You are making an anecdotal and unfair comparison here. Forming a local company in the Netherlands vs forming an international company in both the US and the Netherlands.
You seem to be under the impression that some time "back then" there was a magical period in which news reporting was free of all sensationalism.
Crack a history book on the subject. You would be greatly suprised to see how badly the line between entertainment and news was blurred BEFORE television when print media was king.
"Why am I willing to pay more for music than I would for video?"
Because video is typically only viewed a few times. Music has much more longevity. You get much more in the long run out of a $1 song then you do a $1 video.

Do you really think Sony is making a profit on PSP's at $250?
They have to combat homebrew because people that buy the PSP solely for homebrew/hacks generate zero (maybe even negative) dollars for Sony.
These days game system manufacturers sell their systems for very little profit or even a loss to get the system into peoples hands. They then make the money back by selling games.
If they sold a "hackable" version for $400 (so as to actually *GASP* make a profit) would you still buy it?
Lol that was a picture a friend took on his girlfriends camera, as a joke while on vacation. Unfortunely for him the camera ended up in somebody else's luggage, and I subsequently posted it on the 'net, cause hey, why not?
I cut out a big hole in the door panel that came with it. I called Apple first to verify that I could order a new one if needed:)
I wasn't all the skittish about it since I have another g5 at work I can swipe the panel from if I need to send it in for repair.
I used the rectangular frame on the inside of the panel as a guide and didn't need to add any kind of "window" to the door panel because there is already the clear plastic airflow insert behind the door.
The black dot at the top of the door is a switch that turns the cathodes on/off.

An internet cafe can find a way to make money while offering service like this for free to it's customers.
And yet the poor ol' telecoms are having such a hard time making money due to Google stealing their bandwidth.
Bandwidth that both Google and end users already pay the telecoms for.
There is probably cheap readily available electricity nearby, likely in the form of a dam. A dam that prevents flooding.

Do you have any idea just how much you can do with 2 lines of PERL?
In 4-5 years you will have phenominal increases in all of those things. Look at computers from 5 years ago as a reference.
But what if the pirates have these: Bose QuietComfort 2 Headphones ??

With the relatively low level of HDTVs out there, neither new format is going to catch on. People will just continue buying DVDs.
Apple's Airport has had this functionality for a looooong time. I actually used it a couple years ago while on vacation.
