You can over-simplify calorie counting, but it isn't a myth. Eat less calories and you eventually weigh less. You may be less healthy, but I guarentee, you'll weigh less! I read some woman's magazine article one time that was like "Eating less calorines doesn't mean you lose weigh!" I was like, "really, tell that to someone starving to death..."
Getting 150 calories from a Twinkie certainly is less beneficial than 150 calories from oatmeal, for the exact reasons you describe, but they both give your body 150 calories to use (or store...).
Also, don't forget if you start an exercise regime, you're replacing fat with muscle at some level. Muscle weighs more. (But it looks better and takes up less space.)
Hacker's Diet is the best way to lose weight IMHO. It explains the basics (consumer less calories than you burn), and offers some good strategies for eating and exercise and geeky tools (inlcuding a web-based tracker) to aid in your descent into fitness. I lost close to 30 lbs on the "diet" and while it wasn't painless, it was pretty straightforward. I did gain a good amount back 2 years later when I quit smoking, however.
This is a solution in search of a problem. If you're really worried about labels on your fruit, there's something I need to talk to you about, called Iran's Nuclear Program.
That aside, I do want to correct something -- most clerks (at least the good ones) actually memorize nearly all the fruits and all their code numbers. Check it next time you buy produce, they almost never look at the code before keying it in. Even with apples. It's actually pretty impressive how much cashiers at grocery stores have to memorize (they get paid better than you'd expect, too.)
I do the same thing, but I'd kill for a BlackBerry or iPhone with a monochrome LCD display. It's the display that kills that battery, as much as the CPU and the wifi. Crap, in a few years an eInk display may be ready. Color is great, but I really just want email and twitter, forever, without charging.
My gf got this. It does a neat job of blocking sites which have removal info. What's also awesome is that most of the purchased ads around malware bytes and spybot attempt to direct you to different malware sites. She won't buy a Mac. wtf.
Formal English lacks a distinct second person plural but it isn't just youse hicks in the South who try and put one back in. The Northeast version even has formal (youse) and informal (yis) forms, like French.
Early PC software pioneers might have maxxed out their credit cards to BUY an Apple II. I wasn't suggesting Woz or Jobs did so to BUILD the Apple II. And they sold blue boxes -- the means to steal from the phone company -- not actual time.
Just to add to the horse-shit, there was a key difference between the early computer industry and the nascent private space industry. Two guys in a garage could start a small hardware or software company and have a shot of success. Getting a rocket to orbit or manned flight takes a few more resources than maxxing out your credit card to buy an Altair or even an Apple II.
I refuse to buy a device with a screen unless I know the resolution. 5", 6" -- who gives a fuck. How many pixels does it have? (I know, I know, I can research this, but I RTFA and it didn't say, so I'm irritated.)
I think you've got the analogy backwards. It actually shows how powerful and capable those early micros were. Kind of embarassing when your multi-gigahertz PC can barely run a word processor, or stalls when trying to display a photo, huh?
Iran uses it military to attack US forces in Iraq via its bomb supplying proxies. It uses it proxies in Lebanon to attack Israel civilians with missiles. It uses its proxies in Afghanistan to attack US and government forces. In most cases, the proxies are aided directly by members of its elite Revolutionary Guards. When its people protest a statistically false election, they are beaten and shot in the street, while the propaganda machine tries to lame the West for "inciting" the protests. And some total dumb fucks, like you, seem to believe them.
Additionally, Iran has illegally mined international waters and killed US sailors with mines. (Google Operation Praying Mantis). Iran's president was likely personally involved in the illegal hostage taking of US diplomatic personel in the 1970s.
Eve is by far both my favorite MMO and my favorite game I don't play. Anytime the world is getting boring, you can count on some major scandal or event in Eve to pep things up.
Read the sentence again, please. They could have been written by *anyone* in his living room, not just him!
My issue with the DX is that you can download newspapers, but not as an image of the front page -- just as a list of files. If I wanted to do that, I'd use a web browser. When I can d/l a paper and read it like a paper -- lots of stories per page, ability to scan quickly over it all -- I'll buy one in a heartbeat. I woudl guess that's a few years away though.
The blackberry has a hard keyboard (sorry Apple), and a consistent UI (sorry WM). The end. Call me when Apple ships a phone with a hard keyboard, or MS doesn't randomly change the function of the menu buttons from app to app (eg the button that is 'back' in most apps, turns into 'reply' when you get a text message...).
Don't knock short stays. Being able to take a red eye to NYC from SF at 10 at night, land, have breakfast, go to an 11am meeting, and then take a 3pm flight back to SF, arriving maybe 7 or 8pm local time, is a pretty neat trip.
What he said, but also... have you tested the google calander in different tme zones simultaneously? In my experience, it blows chunks in the worst possible way. IF people are really going to be travelling around the world, an online system for mail with no local cache might be a really bad idea.
Sadly one of the banned apps is the only thing that would make me return to WM -- an alternate dialer. The default dialer app uses about 50% of the screen real-estate for the virtual buttons, pretty much necessitating the use of a stylus to dial. Apple uses almost 100% of the screen, making dialing with your finger on glass much more reliable. Of course, the BlackBerry uses actual buttons, so that's what I have.
Southwest also dosn't charge anything for checking. They're also the online airline I've ever seen that actually has employees who use common sense -- that is, they aren't going to give two figs if you bring a McDonald's bag in addition to your rolling bag and laptop bag, even though it's technically 3 containers. Of course, the collary is they'll start checking stuf very quickly. SWA is all about turning around the planes as fast as possible -- that's their edge.
Read the comment above about people using unlimited cell phones as baby monitors and stuff -- it's mean-spirited to purposely use the wrong tool for the job. I could torrent Big Bang Theory every week, but it's about a billion times easier to just DVR it and watch it on my actual TV. Does it cost more? Depends on who you ask. It costs me a bit more, it costs Comcast a ton less, and it costs my neighbors a ton less in terms of bandwidth. But, when you add in the convenience side of things, it costs me a ton less, because I don't have to deal with the time and effort hassles of piracy. Using the wrong tool fro the job (a knife to unscrew a screw, a wrench to pound in a nail, a computer to watch TV shows) just strikes me as an inelegant solution to a problem.
Most of the ones they send out to replace broken ones are refurbs, not new systems. I'm surprised I haven't gotten one of my own back yet, to be honest, given that I'm on my SEVENTH. As for why people keep buying and playing them... absent the hardware issues, it's an awesome system with great third party suport and the best "friends list" capability.

What? I've never heard "steep" mean "easy" when refering to learning curves. Exactly the opposite.
Can a mac laptop drive multiple monitors? I believe that was also a requirement.

Memo to the nerds: wash your hands, early and often. Easiest way to prevent spreading disease.

Yes. (also, movies make back their expenses -- ideally -- from the box office)
