You are right, it would suck if errors made some users not get their music, and that many will not return to the iTMS to buy more songs. HOWEVER, apple is getting the BILLION dollars either way, and if only 1 in 10 out of the billion users (assuming no duplicates) return and the rest ditch it for good, that is still a GIANT userbase addition.
Now we need a Coca Cola / Burger King announcement of 2 Billion dollars in free music to show up Pepsi and McDonalds!
this is one of the many uses i would like to have for a Head Mounted Display with a camera...
there was a story months back about a camera/display app that would create like a virtual doom game in real life. one of the cool things associated was that it could print information about objects ontop of them in the display... like looking at a building would then have its address printed on the screen in the foregrond of the building, etc. VERY COOL stuff.
why not get it to start compiling a map of a city? how many geeks are in NYC and would stick one of these laser setups on the dash of their car? granted, it wouldn't be autonomys, but combine it with a gps unit to let it know what area of the city it is mapping then upload to a opensource mapquest.com sorta setup and have the entire city get mapped!
sure, maybe a CVS of the entire system? actually, that might be a nice feature for your documents file, an automated cvs/backup/versioning system for those files.
i forget the name now, but there was a pda that was the size of a type 2 pcmcia card. it actuall synced that way to, by putting it in a pcmcia card slot on your laptop... really small, and pretty neat.
we are trying a similar lab setup at my high school, a migration that i am one of the 3 students in charge. We are using k12LTSP (redhat 9 based, and supported) and are goign to make thick clients out of the 30 machines in the lab(all programs are loaded off the server, and run on the machine once loaded... also, we will have a couple gig drive in each machine for a/tmp directory)...so far so good, have a long ways to go, but am learning a lot!
PS: we are at the stage of booting off a floppy to load the bootable nic driver, which then talks with the server... we haev gotten as far as trying to load X on the client machine, but it seems to fail, any ideas?
i think that 1 single driver being able to crash the entire system is more of a concern than the fact that linux may in some way have to start coping with window's buggy drivers.
done that! actually, i pulled 2 on a 4-disk raid... had i waited, it would have rebuilt itself, but the errors that occured shortly after the drive swap made me panic and reinstall... o well, another lesson learned.
This project just SCREAMS freenet. Yes, the project had a little turmoil, but it is functional and doing well...
Freenet allows you to post things others might not want you to post, anonymously, securely, and if your computer is turned off, that information can still be stored over the network in a nodes 'cache'... the more popular the file, the easier, faster, and more distributed the file gets....
Freenet Freeweb - easy way to post websites(freesites) Frost - a message board frontend for downloading/searching freenet, very neat!
but how about trying to get a patch for linux 2.0 or 2.2? yup, they are still maintained. and not supporting a product ONE version out of date?! i mean, ie4 can drop supports, but win98 ships with ie5, and that is still a HUGE install base.
Also, if MS is on SP 2, they should have stores sell computers with xp without it on their(within reason). They should update the images of the installs given to oems to follow service packs, and particularly bad months of security patches. How hard is that?
the gamecube runs on(i believe) a powerpc G3 processor, and has a broadband/dialup adapter... the proprietary cds would be nearly impossible to duplicate, but maybe getting linux on the larger mem cards?
A g3 cluster of $100 boxes that are the size of 3 5.5" drives... sweet deal.

Mono 2.8 Released

at best, mono will be a never ending catch-up game... always having to tweak itself to stay MS compatible... plus, mono will need to be able to handle all the win32 api calls, so that means WINE needs a lot more development before it will be a formitable opponent to.net
a native port would be huge, but Bill would never give Linux that much power... here is hoping Apple gets a native port of.net
processing power has Moore's law to keep it going. Seriously, every 'next generation' of processor goes leaps and bounds ahead of the previous, just tapping into all that power is what is hard.
so don't let the S5 go away, stock up a couple now for when yours die.
Seriously, i will never know how useful this machine is to you, but the way you described its importance, i would suggest getting on ebay, or the like, and buying 1 or 2 extra S5s, with maybe a couple spare pens, and whatever accesories that could be hard to find in the future, then pack them away for when your currect S5 dies.
Not as much space on these as a full distro, and these are live cds, so basicly a mini-knoppix style thing. Might be worth looking into to have as a quick fix for a bad computer....
PS: the RIP in RIP Linux stands for "Recovery Is Possible"
1. Microsoft, generealy speaking, has already won the battle for the US gov, they are firmly entrenched. China, however, with their billion person population and iffy copy-right laws gives MS the willies... what if they made a Chinese linux, and put 1 billion people behind it in terms of userbase, along with coding, beta testing(to a lesser extent)? that would give linux A HUGE, uncalculable hand up in this Windows vs Linux race.
2. Why not china move to Mac? because they are also(less so, but still) proprietary and American... ideally, China wants an OS made in house(or that they have FULL control of) that is of high quality to use en mas within their country. Apple and MS are both US companies and proprietary... Linux is not a company, and is open, thus making it very attractive to china.
ya, because raping a woman, than killing her for getting pregnant out of wedlock by way of a PUBLIC STONING deserves a backhanded joked from you. What a prick.
I mean honestly, woman were oppressed, beaten, raped, and killed, in this(and many other countries), yet you, sir, have the gull to joke about posters who think Nigeria should fix problems at home(oppression, murder, etc.) rather than put a damn satelite up in orbit...
i wonder what percentage of windows licesnses are for dell computers? how many desktops at home and workstations, along with servers, at work run on dells?
granted, it may not be such a huge margin that MS would bow down to dell, but dell sells a lot of Windows licenses, and they could throw their weight around if they wanted.
finally a 23" display for the iMac!!

and now with fedora, you won't have to worry as much about the name, since that is hald the point of the project.

check if distributed.net has an optimized athlon64 client, or help in writing one, and then compare yourself to other's stats.

it might be worth giving this guy a look. not as compact, but looks handy none the less.
