As far as the MOTU goes, I don't think it will work. To look for your specific card go here to see if it is supported by ALSA. There is a DSSI plugin that will allow for use of VST plugins. I have not tried it so I can not condone or condemn the use of it. I am in a fortunate position with the music work I am doing on Linux. I need a new sound card, so I can browse through mailing lists and see what will/won't work before I purchase anything. All of my VST instruments and software was given to me by reps, so there will be no money lost. Good luck!

Will anyone, or anything, ever see it again. This expensive contraption sits silently on the surface of a frozen moon, billions of miles away, while we move on with our everyday activities. Kind-of surreal.

I run a non-profit (owlinteractive.org) and it has been my experience that the kids enjoyment depends on their level of knowledge. I run several after school programs where some kids want to learn the basics, have help with home work or learn security. I will suggest maybe looking for community centers that have facilities that are in need of repair as well. This helps so many people. Just use your imagination, keep them interested and the easiest way I have found to do that is to ask them what they want to do and what they like. Right now we are learning programming by creating a multiplayer text based game. It is fun for everyone.

  5. the crap argument on Java 1.5 vs C# · · Score: 5, Interesting

Is this article flamebait? Maybe I am just misunderstanding when he says:

"At this point (even before Whidbey) the deciding factor (as always) for Enterprise work, when choosing a language platform, should be the support it has behind it, in terms of IDE, tools, api, and longevity of the vendor pushing it (forget the OpenSource crap argument, those guys are too in love with Perl, Python, and Ruby..."

Which "crap" argument is he talking about? I assume he means that when using those languages you have thousands of directions to go for help in howtos, docs, tutorials, books and of course the loving #perl. I normally would not reply to something like that, but I took offense. Yes I love those languages. They all have strong points and make life fun when coding. I have support and have never had to rely on a company to provide said support. Oh yeah, and I write enterprise software with the mod_perl crap everyday of my life. Thanks.

I have to enlighten you and let you know that some of us "hate" them because of the behavior they exhibit. They are a monopoly and strive to limit the users and the competition. Some of us enjoy open source and *nix simply because it provides us with freedom for the first time in our life. M$ could make the best damn OS in the world, but as long as they attempt to hurt other companies AND the end users I will not support them.

This would make an interesting sparring partner or something to help you with that form you just can't remember. I know... there are other variables to consider, but think about the ability to adjust your partners skill and strength level. Of course it will be some time before a small school or individual could afford anything like this, but when it happens it could help many people learn.

The icing for companies is that meditation programs come cheap. "Everybody is dealing with limited dollars," says Grossman. "It's important to keep things going when times aren't so good." So employees can breathe easy: This is one perk that isn't likely to get axed.

That is the key. The companies think they are getting something to benefit productivity at a cheap price. I hope the program isn't forced, but at the same time I hope it doesn't turn into management saying, "Jimmy isn't going to the yoga class. He spends that time surfing the internet instead." Then finding ways to axe Jimmy because he isn't doing what they believe will create productivity. Don't get me wrong, I love Yoga, but I also realize that everyone is different and require different activities to stimulate them. Growing up in a small town my "meditation" was skateboarding. It helped me cope with my surroundings. Now my "meditation" is playing music and the occasional lotus position. I do although recognize that skateboarding was my saving grace at that point in my life and yoga would have never worked. We are all different.

I said it. Sorry. The harsh reality is the Internet is driven by the masses, and the masses want something that will wow them. More importantly keep their attention. It made me really think about the direction the web will ultimately go. Just look at this. It says clearly what we can expect the future of Internet innovation to be. The rest will become a great place for research, which is where the browser will stay. #!/i/am/chaos

Take a deep breath. Now, look deep into yourself and discover why it is that you can't realize that people have different opinions. Also, I took this from more of a spiritual level which I am sure is hard for you to recognize, because after all, you are right. Which of course is what makes you wrong. It is sad that the meaning was lost on so many people like yourself. I recommend studying some Gnostic, Buddhist, Taoist and Neo-Pagan text to have more of an understanding of where they are coming from. None of these themes were touched on in your college philosophy class, which is part of the reason you are having a hard time seeing where it is coming from. It is also why you resort to attacking people who share their opinion. It is a shame that you are this way.

  15. Deeper meanings (*** WARNING SPOOLERS ***) on Matrix Reloads to $42.5 Million Opening · · Score: 5, Interesting

From a philosophical and spiritual point of view I enjoyed this film more than the first. I left the first film thinking, wow what a great idea. I left this film questioning everything I just saw. The angle of Neo being the rebellious child of the world that was created by the architect, and realizing that he has free will and the same abilities the creators of the Matrix and lesser programs have really resonated with me. I can see where they are going and am quite interested in seeing if the real world is discovered to be another type of Matrix. Which I hope is the bold angle they might take instead of it being part of the same Matrix designed as a distraction. The creators of this film truly managed to convey a deep message intertwined with intense action and the idea that "he is just human" disputing itself repeatedly. They expounded on the original concept very well, leaving splintering questions in my mind. He was handed a spoon in the real world before returning to the Matrix. Maybe he will realize once again that there is no spoon. After all, what is real?

That will server as my first proof. If I am going to do any flyers for my band I do the same. They can run me off black and white straight from a CD at .10 a pop. It is good to see one thing in Nashville related to music moving forward. I have lived in Nashville on and off for 8 years and have watched the music industry and scene slowly dissolve. I used to work for a company that manufactured a headphone system, custom built computers using all the great software and hardware and sold an array of digital hardware to studios. Well, the studios started going away, then other music related companies started going away and I got laid off. If you drove down music row today you would see more "For Lease" signs than you would business signs. The irony of this is the DJ scene in Nashville is almost non-existent. There is nowhere to go and see good Techno/Jungle/etc... Practically all the music scene is dead, everything from country to Hip-Hop. I know this because I am part of it. Once again, it is good to see a company here staying alive and actually being on top.

  19. Web Developing keeps me on Windows on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I am a web developer. While all the server side apps I develop are on Linux and FreeBSD, the "GUI", if you will, has an audience that is primarily Windows, so I need to know how it works and feels. Also, I edit video and no one has developed Linux drivers for my capture card and I simply do not have time to. Also, I do a great deal of Flash development and it is quirky in WINE. The last, but certainly not least thing keeping me on Windows is Logic Audio Platinum. I have invested to much money in that and use it way to much to start over on another OS. Multitrack/MIDI is not a strong suit of Linux or OpenSource (I mean to the degree Logic is, sure there are audio apps out there, but they do not compare in features). I hope that changes, but until then I am going to have to run my Windows Version of Logic Audio because it does everything I need.

At work I have everything minus FreeBSD and add a few Macs to the list. At first I didn't get any help with setting up Linux, but then I learned to ask the questions correctly and never mention the *nix. They do not support Linux, but they do support your connection and that should be all that matters. The only time I needed to call them was when I had outages that were eventually traced to a bad line that needed to be replaced. Once replaced, everything was fine. They never gave me any grief about my setup, nor did I give them any reason to by telling them what I ran. I figure that if I can set the box up, I don't have to ask them anything. If I do need to ask them anything I keep it limited to, "What are your DNS servers' IPs?". Not, "Hey I am trying to get my Linux box to work....."
