    God save the fucking Queen. Nobody else can.

    I think perhaps you misunderstand what I mean by filtering.
    When you enter a search term, a (good) search engine will filter out anything that doesn't at least partially satisfy that term.

    The very best search engine would find you a (the?) page with exactly what you wanted. This isn't really possible (for now) so, as you say, that's what rankings are for.

    I still prefer Google though.

    Even if we assume that the idea is to capture LA, and not just destroy it (otherwise, this is a very short exercise), any thinking army would just cut off LA and disrupt the water supply. Sure, you could live off of bottled water for a little while, but LA is very vulnerable in this way.

    Perhaps this would be a good time to ask how the army would survive if LA had no water? They're human, too. Even if they had made some provision, it would probably only convince the populace to redouble their efforts to take that water (see the part of Sun Tzu about the command to the army to break their cooking pots [ie. they had to take the enemy's cooking pots, die in battle, or die of starvation])

  17. To minimize the traffic on Slate On Worms That Plug Security Holes · · Score: 2, Interesting

    The white worm needs to be passive; a compromised system will try and attack other systems - all the "good" virus has to do is wait for an attack. When an attack occurs, our "good" virus has the IP of a compromised machine on which to mount a counterattack/patch.

    The white worm should also uninstall itself after a predetermined length of time, say 10 days.

    I understand the concern people have about auto-patching, however I am certain that none of those people would put themselves into a situation where they were vulnerable in any case - they would only see a benefit from this, in the overall lessening of net traffic.

  25. It's all down to the female brain... on Wanted: Female Game Testers · · Score: 1

    I remember reading that the female brain is wired somewhat differently to that of the male.

    Supposedly they have (generally) less capacity for spacial awareness*, but higher ability in problem solving and organisational skills. Hence, women (again, generally**) prefer games like Tetris and, say, The Sims. (And I'm sure we all remember the study that women were more open to arousal after playing Tetris...)

    With the current trend in gaming going towards more and more 3D-based gaming, it puts those with lesser spacial awareness at a disadvantage.

    So if gaming companies want women to play their games, then they are simply going to have to be more original in their ideas, instead of churning out stuff like Quake 497 and 3D-car-racing-deathfuck 2010.

    Of course, as a man, I'm quite happy to buy some of these last examples.

    * - <sexism> Most women can't read maps.</sexism>
    ** - I say generally - my girlfriend hates Tetris.
