Depends on the laws in your country. In the United States, the answer is no. When you buy a DVD, you have a liscense to the content on that DVD only. You are allowed to make a personal backup copy of the DVD, but that does not intitle you to make copies of other people's DVD's, or other people's version of the movie (VCD, VHS, Film, etc).

Um, sure they do. All the time in fact. At last years E3, the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP were shown for the first time. Both recieved modifications to their design before being released to the public. While the difference won't be "night and day", it is very possible that the X-Box 360 shown at E3 this year will be tweaked and modified before final product ships for Christmas.

First off, this isn't new. Tivo has been doing this for months. I first started getting these in January. And to make clear, the "pop-ups" only appear when fast forwarding through commercials, not during shows. Basically a banner pops up and asks you to hit thumbs up if you want more information. I've never hit the thumbs up, so I don't know what happens at that point, but I'd guess it takes you to a prerecorded commercial of some sort or gets recorded at Tivo HQ and a printed packet gets sent out.

Ok, then even better. They're going to use Microsoft's settlement to go after other companies who are infringing on the patent (Probably Apple and Real). Now that the 800Lbs has set an example for everyone, they should be able to parlay that into nice big settlements from the other guys.

I still don't see how the stock holders were screwed. They're in a better position today than if Microsoft passed on the technology and did not infringe on the patents, and better than waiting several more years in the hopes that the court would award an even bigger settlement down the road.

How many TV's are in the typical home? How much bandwidth will you need to provided signal to all of them (provide each is tuned to a different station)?

While you might only need 19.5Mbps, that assumes only one channel/TV, and assume you aren't do anything else on the network. Most homes have to contend with multiple TV's, plus little Jenny video chatting with her friends, and little bobby is downloading MP3's over P2P, while mom is using Vonage to make a call. You need a bigger pipe to support all of that.

The real question that now needs to be asked is what sort of QoS is provided to insure no dropped packets for VoIP and HDTV?

Does this surprise you? Walt Disney pioneered this with the original "Disneyland" TV program. In order to finance the creation of Disneyland park, he sold (I want to say to CBS, but I'm not sure) a series of 1 hour programs. He named the show Disneyland and each week it played a program that fit one of four themes that just happened to be named after the 4 major themed areas in his upcoming Disneyland park. He was pretty much free to create whatever programming he wanted, so several of the episodes revolved around the construction and grand opening of Disneyland Park. Walt also used the park (once it opened) to promote new theatrical releases, and continued to use Disneyland/Wonderful World of Disney/Etc as a place to promote his park and movie ambitions.

Walt was one of the world's best marketers and the Disney company still uses many of his innovations today to continue to cross-promote their products.
