TFA mentioned something about distribution problems.

In the area I'm in (Downtown Long Beach, Ca), the iTunes bottles didn't reach most stores until the end of February. All of the stores were carrying Lakers promotional bottles instead.

Once the iTunes bottles started showing up, I won a few songs. When I went to redeem them, iTunes didn't have any of the specific songs that I wanted. They didn't have any Led Zeppelin songs, so I went looking for some songs off of a CD that my wife wants. They didn't have that either, so my caps didn't get turned in.

Screen space is cheap too. Spend a few hundred dollars on a second video card and monitor, it is great for developers, or anyone who is using their computer for work.

I can have 1 screen with my code on it, and another with the app I'm developing on it running so I can see what each code change does without having to switch windows.

Or I can have a help document open on one screen, and my code on the other. Or my SQL Enterprise manager open on one screen, code on the other. I can have my development environment open on 1 monitor, but my other monitor resized to 800x600 with my app I'm writing running on that monitor to see what it will look like on most of my client's machines, etc.... The possibilities of what to do with dual monitors is endless.

Both Windows and Linux support multiple monitors without any hassle. Once you try it, you'll never want to use a single monitor again.

About a month after having our second child, the coupon printer at the checkout started printing coupons for baby formula, no matter what I bought.

Their system knew who I am based off of my ATM card, and knew that I had a new baby. It kept printing the formula coupons to keep me coming there.

Do I mind it? Hell no. The coupons I was constantly getting (And still getting occasionally) are worth about $10 each, and I was getting one no matter how little I spent at the store. There were several times I ran in for something small, and ended up with a buy one get one free coupon for formula worth 2-3x the amount of my purchase.

In the last few months, I've gotten $200-$300 worth of formula coupons, so to me it is worth them tracking what I buy at the grocery store.

Not quite right. A _sequence_ of notes makes a song. An unordered collection of notes would not be a song.

If you would read past the next sentence in my previous post, you would see that was my point exactly. A database doesn't have to be in any particular order, where as a sequence of notes does have to be in a particular order to make a song.

  24. Re:Just because Wired says it doesn't make it true on Do You Have A License For Those Facts? · · Score: 1

If you "randomize the records in a database," you're not doing the same thing as randomizing notes.

Yes, you are. A collection of notes makes a song. A collection of records makes a database. If you want to break it down even more, a collection of fields makes a recordset. The notes have to be in a specific order to make a specific song, but the fields in the recordset can be in any order, and the recordsets can be in any order in the database, and you will still have the same database.

In the same way, if you randomize the FIELDS in a database -- take a NAME from one record and put it in the ADDRESS of another -- you would come up with a completely different database.

Yes, and that database would be absolutely worthless. Having data in the wrong fields makes the database dirty, and the data unuseable. Imagine taking a note from a song, and putting that note in the lyrics.

Now, if you meant changing the order of the fields in a recordset, we're back to the same argument in my original post - The database is still fully functional, and you will be able to get the same data out of it.

  25. Re:Just because Wired says it doesn't make it true on Do You Have A License For Those Facts? · · Score: 4, Informative

Think about it this way: you can copyright a guitar riff, but you obviously can't copyright a note. A note is a basic, concrete thing, you can't CREATE a new note. Does this fact bely the creation of original songs? I don't think so...every time music seems stagnant, somebody finds a new way to make it.

Ok, now if you take your collection of notes, and randomize the order they're in, you have something totally different. Now, take your database, and randomize the records in that. You still have the same exact database. They are two totally different ideas.
