    The last time I tried the Aqua x-chat, I couldn't send with DCC. Could receive fine, but /dcc send never even opened up a window. (Or it did, but selecting a file didn't do anything. I don't recall exactly.)

    It'll get there, but for now, x-chat in WindowMaker is the only way to go. =)

    There _is_ a video gaming league (no link handy, sorry). The prize for 1st place in their first competition was, as I recall, $10,000. So were _they_ working?

    You've had the luck (and it is luck), apparently, of never making an ill- or mis-informed choice (warning labels on cigarettes? there are warning labels on fucking toothpicks, man), and therefore think that anyone who does is below you and undeserving of sympathy or help.

    If I ever come across you, stranded in a well or something, I'm going to tell you that you should have looked where you were going and walk right on by.

    Oh, and just so you know, asshat, there are no warnings on cigarette packs that they are addictive. Merely that they are dangerous.

    My apologies. It's not actually free. It costs $20, but to the best of my knowledge no features are turned off in the non-registered version.

    There's also an application from Haxial called RemoteAdminTool (RAT). It's available for Mac and Windows (I think a Linux version is coming soon) and it's free (as in beer). I've used it and it's not bad. Aside from displaying the screen, it also allows you to kill processes and restart/shutdown the remote machine.

    For those who are unaware, Haxial uses their own, incredibly ugly GUI for all their applications, with no way to get the native GUI elements. There's some explanation for this on their webpage, but it's poor and I honestly don't feel like finding it!

    There are a number of good reasons not to use Mac OS X (or Windows or Linux). Yours, however, is not one of them.

    And for the record, I think 'drag folder to hard drive, pat self on back' is a much better way to install than 'sacrifice goat, burn candles, eat goat carcass, worship at altar, double-click setup.exe, pray.'

    BTW: All this pico stuff your doing makes me wonder where all that "mac ease of use" has gone?

    Anything in /etc/ (and other dirs, like /usr/ and whatnot) is Darwin, not MacOS X (that would be /System/ and /Library/). This is not a precise measure by any means, but roughly how I think of it.

    I know I'm answering a (bad) troll, but I still feel this is an important distinction to make.

    If you tossed an old Performa or something around I couldn't possibly care less. I've got a really old Mac from the clone era being used by my mom for some simple word processing. Once it goes kaput, I'm going to take off the plastic case and skid it down my (long, sloping) driveway to see the pretty sparks. =)

    I can't remember precisely where I read this, but I'm 90% certain that lookupd is only used in single-user mode. The rest of the time, NetInfo is used...

    Apple is a good (as in 'able', not as in 'holy' or something) company. They have a line of products, from low-end to high-end. If you want better than a 'cippled low-range outdated' card, you go for a higher-end product.

    All (good) businesses do this.

    By your reasoning, McDonalds should only sell the Big Mac, Microsoft should only sell WindowsXP Professional, car companies should never make a car under $50,000, and Apple should only sell PowerMacs.

    I'm 90% sure this is a troll, but whatever.

    Microsoft has a monopoly, which isn't illegal. They abused it, however, which _is_.

    (I tought somebody spelled it "Jagwyre" but apparently it wasn't Apple since their site spells it "Jaguar".)

    Jaguar was the code name for OS X 10.2, which became the official name because, um, everyone liked it, I guess!

    Steve Jobs, apparently because of his accent, pronounced it 'Jag-wire' whenever he said the name, so some people took to spelling it Jagwire, Jagwyre, etc. It's a joke, and a pretty lame one, in my opinion. =P

    Classic has some Apple-imposed limitations. I believe it isn't allowed to interact directly with hardware, which makes it suck for some music-related stuff.

    Right-click (or control-click) opens a contextual menu. i.e., it opens a menu in context to what has been clicked. If you right-click on a word or a selected sentence, it would bring up a menu for copy/paste, spelling, etc. Right-click on a lick in your web browser, it might bring up different ways to follow the link.

    Some of these are in the menu at the top of the screen, some aren't.

    Either way, contextual menus don't replace the main menu.

    At least an *option* for sloppy focus / click to raise - click-to-focus-and-raise just sucks ass.

    An API for a real honest-to-god VWM. Space works for now. I guess.

    If Apple are serious about wooing *nix users they really need to fix at least some of these. Most of these are minor issues and should be easily fixed. It's beyond me why they haven't been fixed yet.

    (I didn't even bother to mention middle-mouse-button paste).

    Yeah... Yeah! And also:

    How about something called Your Documents on the desktop? I really want that.

    A buttom somewhere that pops out a menu where I can select applications, system preferences, etc.

    An app called Manage Applications or something, where I could add/remove programs centrally, instead of having to put them in the trash.

    'Trash' sounds so... harsh... They should rename it to 'Recycler' or something.

    If Apple are serious about wooing Windows users they really need to fix at least some of these. Most are minor issues and should be easily fixed. It's beyond me why they haven't been fixed yet.

    (I didn't even mention putting menus in application windows instead of always at the top of the screen.)

    This isn't an exact resolution, I know, but if you know the name of the file you can use the Go to: field to enter in the path, in pretty much any app that uses the standard open window.

    You can also type in, say, "/etc/" (/etc is hidden in the Finder, along with /bin, /var, /dev, etc. [speaking of which, anyone know how to make hidden folders without using '.name'?]) and hit return to see its contents.
