  1. PCSB/Schematic CAD for Linux on Schematic/PCB Design for Linux? · · Score: 3, Informative

I think the simple answer is that there is no package available that meets the poster's needs. Those that are available at no cost (FOSS) don't have the ease of use and power that's requested. Eagle seems to be the only thing close to the price range. I haven't used it; I have used "pcb" with success. Its interface is a little funky, but not counter-intuitive. And it is under active development, with a user group list that sends me 20+ emails a day. In particular the requirement for autorouting presents a high barrier. It's a high-end feature, but not really necessary for simple boards. A human being will almost always come up with a better layout than a machine, and for analog boards, autorouting is useless, because the design rules cannot be taught to the machine. If, as some have surmised, the person who originated the inquiry is a woman, the sometimes harsh and dismissive tone of some posts on this topic leaves me no doubt as to why there seem to be so few women involved with Linux. My thanks to those who have posted helpful suggestions.

It's clear that the writer of TFA didn't understand much about what (s)he heard/read about this. I'm sure that the developers of the technology make no silly claims about greater than 100% efficiency. More likely, this is just an improvement on existing technology that gives, perhaps, somewhat better efficiency, or higher power in a smaller size, less weight for a given power, etc. Any of these would be good, but violate no physical laws.

It's only the Constitution and Bill of Rights that protect such a minority from the "mob" - majority rule is rightly limited.

  12. Re:cassettes are great on Cassette Tapes On The Wane · · Score: 1

Cassettes deserve to die a painful death. They are a horrible medium for music, as they were designed for voice recording. The tape speed is too slow and the tracks are too narrow; the intrinsic signal to noise ratio is poor, and the wow and flutter are intolerable. Hacks like Dolby noise reduction never worked in practice since they required the deck to be properly adjusted and aligned, which they rarely were. But as ever in the marketplace, "convenience" trumped quality, as we witness with compressed formats like MP3 as compared to lossless coding.
