What did they revolt against? Parents who took the time to give them the option of good food? Maybe your cousins parents tied to 'enforce' something which is of course stupid.

The parents probably ate crap while telling the kids they had to eat granola... which never works. You have to eat the food too, and enjoy it and make it seem effortless like it's 'just the way things are done' and when they go over to other kids houses and find junk and messy kitchens and fridges full of crap, they'll be slightly embarrassed a little uncomfortable and will make a note to invite their friends over to YOUR house next time, which if you're a good parent is exactly what you want to happen.

Oh AND order Pizza and Chinese takeout every once in a while... and take your kids to GOOD restaurants when they're old enough to appreciate it.

  3. Kids eat what their parents eat on Big Mother Is Watching · · Score: 5, Insightful

Even in High School. If you're a parent and you eat junk or have junk in your home, ie: buy it for your kids or have it around for 'snacking' then you're responsible for your child's bad eating habits. You want your kids to eat right? Keep good healthy food in your home...

Fresh vegetables and fruit.... once a week buy fresh stuff and put it out where it can be seen... fruits in a bowl and vegetables on display, both in fridge and on counter in a nice container or basket. Pre-make good salads... don't keep them in the pre-mixed bag you buy them in.. put them in a nice salad bowl that has a freshness feature (clay to keep moist but also has holes in bottom and sides to let extra moisture out... and add in some extras, carrot slivers, almonds, cranberries, etc. make them look tasty... if you eat meat add some hard-boiled egg white slices and turkey chunks

Make good meals and stick them in the fridge as instant left-overs. These will be cheaper and better than a frozen dinner (less preservatives, etc.) and your teen will actually eat them, cause they can grab them late at night or whenever and heat them up on their own schedule, instead of grabbing a bag of chips or something.

Easy pre-made meals: Lasagna or any Pasta dish, Stir-Fry, Burritos, Taco ingredients, Pre-made sandwiches and wraps, Roasts that can be sliced into cold-cuts (teen-age boys love cutting stuff and they'll just slice off a hunk and grab some cheese and bread), hard-boiled eggs (peeled or not), sliced up veggies (carrot sticks, cucumbers, brockley, etc.) with a good dip (humus or veggie/cream cheese is great).

This might not sound like health-food but compared to the crap they'd stuff their faces with (think any fast-food or junk from convenience store) it's completely healthy and they'll eat it if it's made convenient for them.

In the end you'll find that they will end up looking for similar foods when they are out of the house too. They might even end up taking their lunches to school because the food that's available at home is so much better than the crap at school... but let them keep their 'lunch money' as a reward or else they'll stop taking their lunch just to get the money so they can spend it on other things... who cares what,

Point is they'll be healthier and it will only take a few hours a week on your part to make the food available in a appetizing form that's also convenient.

BTW same thing applies to drinks... get rid of the canned sodas.. just put some pitchers of old-fahioned lemonade (cut the sugar down) and Iced tea and juice and plenty of water bottles.

They'll still have some junk in their diet when out with friends but they won't be creating a habit while at home and the reality is that we all really spend the longest part of our 24 hour day at home... so make it a healthy one and you'll have healthy kids.

So let me put in three keywords, hit submit.. get results... okay 65,056 results... now let me make keyword number 2 3 times more important than the rest... preferably using a slider widget with 100 tick marks on it and a dragging marker to indicate the number... and... the results refactor before my eyes without a refresh so i can see how this has impacted the results list...

For instance, I often look for code examples... now I usually want them in a specific language... lets say ruby which should narrow down my results to just pages that talk about ruby, but my second keyword is xml... and it's much more important to me because I'm looking for a xml processing function, not just a mention that xml is handled by ruby and finally I'm looking for examples but it's not as important as xml to my search because It may filter it too much in favor of just tutorials when an api reference may have what I'm lookig for.

So i get a results list and voila... yep lots of tutorials on ruby xml processing... but lots of books in that list... so I give xml a weight of 30 to see if it brings up a more rigorous set of results with more about xml and less about examples, but still on the topic of ruby... well I would do this if it existed.

    Okay, ready set CODE!

Just for reference I am a professional web developer, producer and interactive director actually.

I completely understand and agree with what you have said. I am of the set of professionals who use the most appropriate methodology for the task at hand. I'll use PERL to do large regular expression string manipulations if it's a requirement but I won't insist upon it to do simple form validation routines where a PHP library on the server and javascript client side will do the job 100%. I'll require that my html and css coders avoid classes if possible, sticking to id's and tags and helping them think through organizing their content semantically so that when we have to distribute the work load everyone can get up to speed on the stylesheets and layouts quickly. I protoype with wireframes and content for the clients before any design has even been started, asking questions about the relationships between the content areas, navigation, etc. to help determine functional requirements well in advance of final design approval... etc. etc.

In the end however, politics and egos will get in the way of a perfectly thought out IA and UI concept which also has a rocking design, engaging user interaction features, etc. because the head of the department at the client whose budget is paying for the project (I'm talking to you Toyota Parts and Service, and Panasonic I haven't forgotten you either...) has a very specific agenda about their marketing strategy and the fact that they've already invested too much in some poorly thought out strategy and simply MUST include a huge graphic for some dumb concert series in a key market region that will be over two weeks after the site launch and won't be replace by anything nearly as important after... and they won't consider a separate micro-site just for that event... gah... short-sighted to say the least.

Anyways... it's not all fun and games but there are some parts where inspiration meets elegance and all is good in the world... and it just really chaps my hide when people who get to work a whole month on getting one website to be perfect feel like they can make other people feel bad about doing their job.

I'd love to talk to the clients about how they should completely rethink how design works... unfortunately all of them really only have experience with print, tv and or radio creative, all of which rely upon constrained and 'final' formats.

I mean how do you tell a guy who's been looking at TV storyboards for the last 20 years and magazine ad layouts... wait, this design you're looking at.. well it could look COMPLETELY DIFFERENT if the user drags open the browser window... that messaging you care so much about.. yes the one you spent $80,000 of market research on and $10,000 of copy writing budget to come up with not to mention legal, focus groups, etc.... well... ...it might just be a tiny piece of text over there in the right hand corner of the page when the user is viewing it on a wide screen (yes, just like the one you have on your laptop) or we could make it so it always looks like someone is yelling it, especially on over 50% of users montors... or we could use the niced fixed design here which has some drawbacks but will always present your message in this context and at this level of visual importance.

I've read some people statements that the above situation calls for a PDF.... ha... nobody likes opening PDFs unless it's something they want to save to read later or to print... PDFs are not a part of the web, they are like a take away brochure which usually goes directly into the trash as soon as you walk away. /rant over/

The web is not about free communication.... it's about marketing, advertising, commerce, etc The internet would be email and crappy pages of text that look like undergraduate thesis papers otherwise... get used to it.

When a company pays $250,000 for a website they want it to look the way they want it to look... end of story. If OTOH they required the website to look great for everyone in every situation, then they would specify that and a much less demanding design would be approved, one which would be liquid or 'elastic' or browser/resolution/os agnostic.. so get over yourselves, cause not all websites are meant to work at a lowest common denominator level but often they do need to work with a certain minimum browser spec list, which is where the issues with browser deficiencies come into play... and where the difference is between a professional who gets paid to make things work within the requirements WHILE meeting project objectives and an Academic who insists on web development dogma DESPITE it's inabiiity to meet those same objectives.

The interrupting part is the most complicated aspect. It requires having all possible options available at all times and ready to coordinate what needs to happen in order to limit destruction of just prior decisions or at least to mitigate the consequences to an acceptable level... ie: if I choose to go left right now, how will that impact the results of my decision to go straight 5 minutes ago (will it cause me to tip over? go over a cliff? run into a wall?), rather than simply taking new input into the equation and re-processing everything again to be ready for the next decision... NOW let's do that for thousands of other options (like drop to a squat and sing a lullaby, or spit a loogie into the wind - which I might do but only after deciding to turn left immediately after).
