    OR, instead of 150x more electricity, 1/150th the cross section. Instead of using 25 tons of copper per mile of 3 phase 138kV service, use 1 ton of this superconductor material and save the copper for something else.

    The price of copper is so high right now that it may not be that much more expensive to go to with the superconductor solution.

    Engineering is everywhere. It just depends on where you want to be. I love South America, so I've learned Spanish and Portuguese. If you like the eurotrash lifestyle, learn some european languages. If you want to participate in the Indian takeover of American jobs, you can learn Hindi and other languages from that region.

    I plan to retire when I am 45 or 50, or at some other time that is financially feasible, and move to my apartment in São Paulo. What I will have amassed in savings by then should carry me for a very long time down there, but I have businesses operating there that will provide me a modest income.

    So, the short story is, my recommendation is to learn a language in an area where a) you would like to live some day and b) american money goes a long way.

    I like the compact Point-and-Shoot cameras because they are easy to travel with. I spend some coin on a nice 7MP camera with nice optics, but I'm finding that the print quality sucks because I can't turn off the JPEG compression in the camera.

    I'd love to find a compact Point-n-Shoot that can save images in uncompressed formats. Anyone know of one?

    I always got a U or an S- in penmanship in grade school, mostly because my handwriting is TERRIBLE. Then again, I started using a TRS-80 Model I for everything in 1980 at the ripe old age of 5 (including learning the BASIC programming language), so I didn't have much use for pens and pencils after that.

    I still attach no importance to having readable handwriting.

    I am sure we'll end up outsourcing this, too.. so... someone will develop a satellite by outsourcing the work to India, the manufacturing to China, and launch it into space on a Russian space vehicle.

    My question is, what the hell does anyone need the US for anymore? The US doesn't actually DO anything except act as a giant bureaucracy.

    I always laugh at people who assume the only value in a media is the physical "thing" itself. I would much rather pay $400 for 2TB of storage that I can quickly access at any time than get pay $200 for it and have to fiddle with media that is not as reliable, not as fast, and requires billable time to manage.

    If you are fresh out of school, chances are you will be the last person to go during a transition like this. You are cheap, and best positioned to pick up on the newest technologies. The company will prefer to buy out people who are close to retirement, so as long as there is gray hair walking around your office, you are probably just fine.

    A friend of mine works for a company who was bought by HP a year ago and they didn't let go of anybody. Not that it's a guarantee, but I think it's false to assume that a merger means layoffs all the time.

    Hear hear... and for data fault tolerance, it'll be cheaper to simply mirror a drive than to use one of these things. BR burners are still several hundred bucks and give you 25-50GB of storage. A 1TB drive is $200.

    HDDs will always be cheaper than optical media.

    Yeah I know simulation is cheaper than Avgas, but hey, there is still no comparison. Simulation is useful for practicing IFR procedures and whatnot, but not for actually flying the plane. I have yet to find a simulation model that can accurately model how my cherokee falls from the sky with no throttle, contrary to the POH's claim that it can get 2NM per 1000ft of altitude at standard atmosphere. Hah.

    California wants to ban direct-to-consumer genetic testing for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that they do not want people running to the doctor to obtain unnecessary treatment for a condition they do not have because there might be a statistical correlation between one of their gene sequences and the possibility of having an increased risk for a disease.

    Another poster here said it well when he said that it would be imprudent to seek a clinical regimen for a disease one does not have.

    Cheap, cooled devices...

    They don't go into a whole lot of detail on what they mean by "cooled devices." This smells an awful lot like "you have to spend a ton of money to save a tiny bit of money."

    If these things have to be cooled with some liquefied gas, then I suppose any cost savings on the material or approach would be quickly eaten up by energy used to cool them... just a hunch...

    But... on one machine, the encryption process hangs frequently, and one time I had to restore from a backup. Other than that, it is pretty much flawless. I can get through a few % each time I reboot before it hangs, so eventually I'll have the whole disk encrypted, but it's going to be a pain..

    Anyone know if I can update the version in the middle of a disk encryption? Maybe that'll fix it...

    The telecoms were given huge tax breaks to roll out new infrastructure in some places. In Radnor PA where I used to live, Verizon strung fiber through our neighborhood in 2001, but left it dark for 7 years. The infrastructure project was paid for 100% with tax breaks, but in the end no gains were realized because Verizon refused to turn it on. The ultimately did, but only in exchange for more tax breaks.

    My neighbor's kid was suspended from school for refusing to use his school-issued laptop to take notes. He preferred pen and paper.

    He was telling me that several times per class, instruction grinds to a halt because of computer problems, or from the kids having difficulty drawing diagrams on the laptops amidst the text notes. It was also damn-near impossible to write down equations in math class, so he gave up and started using paper. When he refused to use the laptop, other kids followed, and he was ultimately suspended for insubordination and "gang activity" for trying to organize a civil protest to the policy that requires that they use the laptops.

    If I ever have kids (and I probably won't because it would be cruel to bring a child into the world in its current state of affairs), they're either going to Montessori school, or be home-schooled.

    I never learned grammar or structure in school. It was not until I learned Spanish and Portuguese that I learned things like tenses, parts of speech, subjects and verbs, and so on.
