I'd much rather be using the metric system - I hate having to do all the conversions with a pencil and paper instead of just moving a decimal point.
I'm just saying there will be a lot of people who raise a fuss over it. We had a hard enough time when our county changed from the rural route system to actually having road names. That was over 5 years ago, and many people still will not use the new addresses, causing more work for the post office.
The proposed 10-digit universal address could be used for both homes and businesses. Slightly longer than Canada's six-digit alphanumeric postal code, it would narrow down addresses more accurately. For example, NAC Geographic Products' address in Toronto would be 8CNB5 Q8Z4R.
Nice thought... but its like the metric system. Who will want to change what they have known for many a lifetime.
I know my 60 year old dad who does carpentry will never learn the metric system, even though it would be easier, why would he, or the millions like him want to learn a new addressing scheme?
Have you been contacted by any companies for use of bittorrent? I'm sure in many corporate environments it could be used to cut down on the size of servers required to handle large files.
I just make it a point to go through my spam folder weekly. I don't get email from people I don't know - Just my family and friends. They all send out notices when they change email, most of the time, I am the one helping them with that. 9 times out of 10 when someone sends me a message without me expecting it, I don't want it anyway. I have no problems with it.
I use my filters this way: upon recieving move all messages to folder spam unless message is from "email@address.com" if message in folder spam is older than 10 days move to folder trash
Each time someone I know sends me an email I add their address. Very rarely do I get new addresses once all of mine are set up. When they do, I add another address.
It takes a while to set up, but I don't have to depend on my ISP, and I can switch with no problem.
That this was only a matter of time. I have this bad feeling before long, any microsoft products, or any software company that is in bed with microsoft will be checking during install to make sure that there is a valid windows license.
There will probably be a line in the EULA stating: It is illegal to run this program on a non-windows operating system.
I sure wouldn't put it past microsoft. I'm sure there would be ways around it, but then microsoft would have a great way to take anyone to court using wine to run windows software on linux.
I sure wouldn't base my decision on whether to buy a model of a car on if the dealer gave away "free" music. I prefer to make my choices based on my age old method 1. - Does it go fast? 2. - Can I afford it without having to sell an organ? 3. - What kind of stereo does it have?
Speaking from personal experience, my CEO is relucant to approve software with no point of support. The more support open source gets, the easier it makes my job of trying to convince him to move to more open source software.
But the worst challenge is administration - This is an actual memo from our company president
Memo To: CEO's From: Jim Date: 9/25/2002 Re: A Memo about Memo's
At the risk of sounding like a Delbert cartoon:
Yes, this is a Memo about the use of Memo's.
There have been several instances lately of inadequate communication, where the use of a Memo may have improved the understanding, or even prevented a problem.
First, I want to emphasize that the best form of communication is face-to-face; the second best is via telephone. Both of those methods allow the free flow exchange of ideas, with immediate feedback. The face-to-face advantage is the "body language" that most people can't hide, even if they tried. An example is a supervisor instructing a subordinate, who says:... "yes I understandâ¦â but their expression shows confusion, and the supervisor knows the training is not complete.
Email is becoming another popular form of communication; it has its advantages, and its shortfalls. An email documents, as succinctly as the author can write it, just what is intended, no more, no less, and complete with a date and time. But a series of emails is not as efficient as a conversation.
Now to the heart of my message: many times, a conversation should be followed up by a Memo. It serves to record whatever was agreed upon, and can be copied to all appropriate individuals, without losing anything ''in translation". Memo's can be sent via email, fax, or courier. They may generate related Memo's in response, which can serve to document progress.
When using emails for this purpose, it is often best to string them together, so that all related emails or attached Memo's, can be referenced. If you are worried that an email may get automatically deleted or archived before the issue is resolved, it is wise to save it to a folder, or even print it if necessary.
It is generally advisable to specify responsibilities and expectations of respective individuals in your Memo's, including deadlines. Sometimes, you may wish to copy the Memo to a supervisor and/or senior management, so they can be apprised of the issue at hand. Let's review: 1) While they don't replace conversations, Memo's are used to summarize understandings 2) Send to those directly involved, copy to others when appropriate, and list the author (you) 3) Date and title the Memo 4) Summarize understandings or instructions, complete with assignments and deadlines 5) Suggest additional meetings or conversations if more clarification is needed Note: 2-3 above are prompted for when using email or the Memo format in Word. We can help explain how we can use Outlook to organize Tasks and schedule meetings.
Example: please provide a copy of THIS Memo to each of your supervisors, and ask them to adopt this form of communication, this week. Thank you.
As Illinois is currently facing a 5 billion deficit. While I would rather first see all the pork barrel projects come to an end, I know that would never happen. That would be like Microsoft cutting Internet Explorer out of windows.
Either POTS (plain old telephone service) with a modem dialing in to a service provider, whether it be the bank itself, or outsourced.
or Leased Line - always connected to the service provider.
Encryption is going towards all triple DES encryption within the next year. The ATMs that I have been dealing with all run a form of OS2 for the operating system.
The majority of ATMs just have a dial up line that is set to block incoming calls, so the only connection is being made from the ATM to the service provider.
Nothing better to increase your business like having something that scares potential customers.
How many windows users that you know that have virus protection software that came with their pc and has never been updated? They won't upgrade their virus software until they learn that it is necessary.
When do they find out it is necessary? When someone hits the web with a massive worm/virus. If nothing massive happens for a while, I'm sure antivirus companies are losing money. What better way to spike sales than by creating panic?

The US population is gaining weight at an alarming rate, with over half the population over their ideal weight.
<sarcasm>Surely stuff like this couldn't be the cause, could it?</sarcasm>
Perhaps we are just training more kids to be doctors these days...
I didn't say it was a bad idea...

What will it do with mailing lists?
They won't accept return emails, so they will never get the challenge?
I won't know what email address they are coming from until I get one, so how could I manually add an address to accept?

One user is proud of the fact that her password ended up being
ifuk92
to break it up
I FU K9 2
now everybody knows her email password!
I'm not going to buy it!!!!
Not that I could anyway, or probably would for that matter.

Where do you find the most resistance is in integrating/using a new standard such as this?
- The software developers
- The software distributors
- The end users
My first guess would be the end users, but I am curious as to which group gives you the most problems.

What is the best way to discourage spammers from spamming? (Aside from Dave Barry's idea of a hunting season and selling tags)
Basically, there are two options for an ATM,
Either POTS (plain old telephone service) with a modem dialing in to a service provider, whether it be the bank itself, or outsourced.
or Leased Line - always connected to the service provider.
