i don't write for the WSJ, but i've always felt that if you like crap, there's no shame in it. why try to conform if you have to compromise what you actually feel? why lie to yourself? on last.fm, young man, there's a place you can go.
speaking of the social aspect of the service, there is a group for readers of slashdot at last.fm. i started it back when audioscrobbler first allowed groups, and there are 277 members as i type this. the charts reveal us as a crowd who do not diverge in a significant way from the rest of the last.fm population, which stands to reason, as at this point last.fm still attracts mostly geeky techie folk.
> Am I the only one that perfered the larger Xbox controllers?
no, you're not. i found it much easier to use than the small one. for those of us with big beastly hands, i'd take the large model xbox controller over a dual shock or small xbox controller anyday. i don't understand why so many controllers are so damned small, it's as if they were designed with children in mind..
> Maybe he thinks they don't deserve it. Or maybe there's a crumpled up > rejection slip in his wastebasket.
he's the president elect of the ALA. he's not really going to be getting any rejection slips. as someone who keeps an online journal, and as the son of a librarian, i have to agree with him. that's why robots.txt has an exclude rule for my 'blog'. i don't want to pollute the contents of the internet[s]. maybe my friends enjoy what i write, and that's fine- i just think it's more responsible to keep it out of the search engines. people often go to search engines for information on a certain subject, and weblogs are all they find in the first few pages. these are mostly sources they do not know, and thus (hopefully) will not trust.
and what he said about the quality of writing in blogs... that's quite hard to argue against. the vast majority of blogs are written by youths for youths- basically public diaries. they are wholly uninteresting as anything but what is considered 'outsider art' by hipsters, who ironically enough compose the upper echelon of the 'blogosphere'. i don't like radiohead, i don't think strongbad is funny, but i do keep a weblog. it's a way to vent, and i don't think it should be considered serious work by anyone. some bloggers are seeking journalistic integrity, and that's great. some people write novels in the form of post-by-chapter blogs. that's cool- but blogs are for the most part internet pollution, redundant, inane, ego-stroking, and self-serving.

Halo on Gizmondo?

speaking of fucking up the PC port- boy, did they ever. halo PC was the only game i've ever had to reinstall directx after attempting to install. it was also the source of the only BSOD i ever got in winxp. i play a lot of FPS games, and the worst problem i had with any game before halo was the game itself having graphics glitches. congrats to microsoft/bungie for creating the only game (actually, the only piece of software, period) that caused my PC to crash & burn since win9x.
as for making joining the forces a sexy option for the kids, they have definitely done their part. for one, there is no blood in america's army, just like real war. nobody gets dismembered when fragged, and everyone fighting against you is a 'fanatical terrorist who hates america' rather than an enemy soldier ("just doing his job") by default. you don't see babies with bombs strapped to them, nor do you see the weeping families of the innocent deceased crying over them.
my younger brother is 18 and gets a lot of calls, he answers them in much the same manner. i still get them occasionally, and i'm 21. my political beliefs are very similar to his [we're both marxists and lean towards pacifism in our personal lives], but i always tried to be as respectful as possible and explain my position on the issues at hand when they inevitably ask 'why'.
still, each phone call takes about 5 minutes on average, because those buggers are getting pretty desperate.
blame tipper gore and the other social conservatives [ie the religious right] who want to make everything squeaky-clean for the stickers you see... just because more popular music these days contains profanity doesn't mean that the core values [sex, drugs, rock n roll] didn't exist back then. i'm not saying any of the music you see in the best buy flyer is 'good' in my opinion, i'm just saying murder, fucking, shooting up, and all that good stuff- they have been the subject of popular music since before any of us was born. ragtime and jazz bands had some pretty racy themes, even for today.. and before that plenty of traditional folk songs are full of sexual imagery and violence. these things have been around since the dawn of time, they've just recently been adopted by large companies seeking to cash in on them because they are becoming so overt that they cannot be hidden. maybe innuendo is a thing of the past in popular music, but i can't be sure, i, like most participating in this conversation don't listen to it.
i played 'political machine' for 20 minutes today. it's no fun, there's not enough selection in regards to political beliefs and you have to be a member of one of the two major US parties [ie republican or democrat]. the graphics are lacklustre, the entire thing seems as if macromedia flash could have done the job just as well [and that is not a good thing]. it's really nothing compared to republic: the revolution, where you had so much control and could create a leader based on your own belief system.
the gameplay is boring, the cast is far too limited, and the issues are obviously thrown together from a list of things people in the USA get polled about, like the iraq war, healthcare, stuff like that. nothing radical. you run ads and bribe corporate interests, give speeches and whatnot, but none of that seems to be of much consequence because you never really feel in control of the character. perhaps that's the underlying message, but it doesn't make for an entertaining game.
bottom line: 'political machine' is shovelware along the lines of 'who wants to beat up a millionaire'. pick up republic instead.
but that's just my opinion, your results may vary.
hmmm.. indian characters in games seem to either be rubbing lamps or blowing torrents of curry-induced flame whilst surrounded by elephants. of course, almost the entire street fighter cast is pretty much a collection of racial stereotypes, but what about games like prince of persia and the like? i don't know of any games which feature prominent indian characters who aren't horribly blatant stereotypes.
same thing with arabs... almost without exception, an arab in a videogame==terrorist.
4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire, and though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all, now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall, i'd love to turn you on.
i'm a pacifist pinko, but i still play AA because it's a decent game. sure, it's propaganda, but i'm a big boy, and i can handle playing a game without being influenced negatively. you come across as a bit condescending, and i'd like to state for the record that all pacifists aren't quite as smarmy as yourself.
in my opinion, that's beside the point- how dare they dismiss as second string jill of the jungle or the giana sisters? i'll play their games over the latest lara shovelware from eidos anyday.
say what you will about the cremaster cycle, it is far more consistent in quality [or the lack thereof] than the star wars saga.

"Iron Maiden artwork was not meant to be squeezed onto a CD cover...."
except, of course, for dance of death . the less we see of that cover, the better.
you're suggesting kids simply drop corporate america for corporate japan? i don't consider that progress.

my late night information sucks. you are correct.
"IANAOB/GYN... but aren't females born with all their eggs intact?"
yes, every egg that passes through a woman's system her entire lifetime is present at birth. when she runs out, menopause takes its toll.
depends on your definition of freedom, of course. bleeding-heart, godless socialists like myself prefer to consult this organization, or this one, and even this one, which was recently condemned by the executive branch of the USA as douchebags.
the cold, selfish libertarian capitalists prefer this one, i imagine.
that would be the green death. go find the dvd and come to terms with your fears.

i use the shift key for 'super neat'.
the thoughts and feelings aren't the problem- it's the redundancy thereof that irks me.

hey- i'm a cher fan. openly.
and when you're a cher fan, a word like 'openly' has a double-meaning, i suppose.
