Unfortunately "does it run linux?" is a question that has lost its meaning. Other day one of my friends saw my xbox and asked me this very question. I said yes...and after a couple of seconds I asked him "why? does it matter?". His reply - "its just cool". He even doesn't have a freakin clue what to do with it? Sad, but Linux just like video games is fast losing its "nerdy" qualities.

One thing that surprises me is that people are so worried about copyright abuses here in states and europe. But the way I look at it, it seems more than double of those abuses happen in Asia - particularly China. Its not a US website or Eurpean webiste that puts up a link for a new movie or soundtrack first on the internet. Its always chinese.

I am not trolling, I fail to see how these laws in Europe or US are going to stop people from downloading stuff from Chinese websites. As long as China is not under these "rights regime" I don't see the value in these laws. My $0.02.

Agree that money is tight for pay. Even if they had, they'll have to jump through lots of hoops and file a lot of paper work to get you that raise. But on the other hand they always have tons of money for all the toys and certification you want. I recently got two 20'' wide flat panels from dell and a cisco load balancer just to play around. Also I have ordered a sun server to learn solaris as I am not fluent in it.

Thus my suggestion go ahead and make use of all those facilities and "extras". If I don't get paid a lot so what at least I don't hate my job and I am not getting laid off any time soon.

Actually, I have had a completely different experience so far. I had been working professionaly for 3 year when I decided to join the sys admin group at my university. Guess what the professors I have dealt with in the couple of months are all very "Linux savvy". At couple of professors, I directly deal with know what I am talking about and do respond accordingly.

But that doesn't change the fact that things move along at a slow pace. Which is not bad at least for now for me. I usually get response to my emails in a day or two sometimes even weeks is possible. The key is to push them to do or sign off things. You have to be very proactive and I guess the private sector gave me a good training in that aspect.

But heck a separate room, fat oc-12 line and chicks having problems, it is nice ;)

If that department is itself going to be a network like my home then I should be surprised.

If general public especially computer nerds say "eh whats new" then no one else is going to bother, coz the general public doesn't even realize they have to bother.

Patents are here to stay, whether we like 'em or not. They are required to protect the IP of both a startup or an (evil) corporation. So since we cannot get rid of it what can be done to make it "reasonable"?

First of all how about you cannot patent an idea. You have to have a working prototype. You cannot just draw something and say this could work. Show us that it works. We need to see that you have actually used some "intellect" of your own that needs protected. Just because you dreamed of something shouldn't stop someone else from contributing something real.

Second, make it mandatory for patents to be "usable" for humanitarian needs. Lets say your corp has invented a drug that cures AIDS. Thus you have two options:

    • Your patent is valid for a short period where you make maximum profit (and let people die as they cannot afford it). Then every other company can copy it and help save lives.
    • Keep your patent valid for the current time allowed but you are forced to provide cheap (or free) alternatives to help humankind.
I don't think people should worry about silly patents like say "one-click" etc. Granted they are gonna create problems, but in the grander scheme, if we can get them to agree to some thing more "reasonable" heck go ahead and patent every fucking idea or dream!

I think that is the case with all information related products and services. There is a saying - "content is the king" and for very good reason. A good example could be Xbox vs Playstation earlier on. Most people were not eager to jump on Xbox bandwagon util they saw games like Halo, Doom start rolling out. So I think it is safe to say that content will determine market penetration.
