  1. Re:performance on Apple Updates Power Mac Line · · Score: 1

I doubt price matters all THAT much to someone buying for performance, especially those in the media production business. A grand or two extra per workstation doesn't matter when you consider the savings of time to complete tasks.

To the *home* user on the other hand... well, I guess that's why there are iMac G5s. :) I have one, they're perfect for home use.

  2. Steven Spielberg on George Lucas Struggles to Reinvent Himself · · Score: 0

Lucas could do what Spielberg did -- throw out all the cute happy junk and start getting into darker "noir" filmmaking. I couldn't believe Minority Report was done by the same guy who did E.T. Lucas should start shooting for the more adult ratings for his future movies.

  3. E&B on 10 Gateway Games · · Score: 1

Back in the day when Earth and Beyond first came out, I was one of the people who bought it and gave it a whirl. It was fun for a time. More importantly one time a girl (a friend) was over at my place who sat down and watched it. I don't know what it was about the game, the simplicity of control, the accessible content, etc... but she almost literally shoved me out of my seat and started her own character to play. Next thing I knew she was coming over to play the game.

  5. MGS2 on For Love of The Game · · Score: 1

There was a point near the end of MGS2, where Raiden, Snake, Otacon and that girl are together, and basically everyone realizes it's going to be almost suicide to get off the rig with all the guards there. It was done with an extreme cinematic flair for the dramatic, where everyone kinda resigns themselves to their fate and presses on. The music was great, the cinematography was awesome, and the voice acting was top notch that could you couldn't take your eyes away from the scene.

That was a DAMN good game! I'd say underrated, but almost every single review I've seen has scored it exceedingly well... but somehow not a lot of people know of the game. That's been one of the few PS2 games I refuse to take in and trade at EB, I still play through it every once in a while.

Is it a good thing then that our computers are capable of doing these things? Sure it's neat to have crazily distorted windows and such, or windows that are translucent so you can see what's behind -- but how USEFUL is that in most circumstances? Not saying it's a BAD idea per se. :)

  12. Movie representations of computer UI on Next Generation X11 · · Score: 3, Interesting

I remember watching movies like Hackers, which is a fairly decent movie overall, and totally laughing at their representation of the user interfaces on the computers. From the seriously hacked up and personalized desktops on everyone's PCs to the "flying through the mainframe" hacking at the end of the film, I was convinced it was there as a joke.

But it seems nowadays desktop environments are getting to be SO customizable and graphically "enhanced", I start to wonder whether those old movies weren't jokes but rather premonitory.

  13. Makes an odd bit of sense on Sony Online To Sell Virtual Property · · Score: 2, Insightful

My first response to this was, like many, "What the fuck?" Almost every game out there has big glaring clauses in their EULAs that specifically state the buying and selling of in-game items is forbidden. But effectively what they're trying to do here is "legalize" it, probably hoping it will become less and less of a black/grey market.

Will it completely put a stop to selling on eBay? Probably not. But for the casual player who can't powergame to get an awesome piece of loot, maybe spending 10 bucks on the Sony Exchange intead of spending 15 bucks worth of online time trying to get it is a good deal.

I also think that if I could pick a single developer out there to try this, especially if it ends up failing miserably at the cost of developer $$$ and reputation (such as it is), I would rather Sony be the ones to give it a go.

I had to laugh when reading it, when there's a lot of verbage like "both companies" this, and "both companies" that, when in reality it's more like "Apple thought it up, Microsoft's playing copycat". There's a reason I don't bother reading C|Net news anymore, this kind of tripe is precisely it.

I wonder if this is an offshoot from the incredible PDF work that Apple has put into OS X. Adobe would be idiots to not leverage that to their advantage on other platforms. I've never seen a PDF read and scrolled through with such efficiency and speed. If memory serves, PDF functionality in OS X is built into the OS at a fairly deep level, allowing not only speedy reads but also the ability to create PDFs from the print dialogs of any application. Definitely one of those under-emphasized features of OS X.

I recently bought a Mac (about a month or two ago) so I don't qualify for the cheap upgrade as far as I know. But I'm still definitely going to pay for this upgrade.

My experience with OS X has been nothing short of amazing. I look between my Mac and my XP machine and wonder why the heck I'm using the latter, when the former is more stable, easier to work with, and generally a hell of a lot more slick. Everybody who's come by has looked at it and scoffed, but when you sit them in front of it and have them play around, most people are sold on the things.
