If anyone knows how to market a product that works with Apple technology, it is Apple. Conventional marketing doesn't quite fly with their products, and would stand completely out of place beside their current efforts. Motorola should realize that their hardware stands to make them a lot of money given the market/mindshare of iTMS. They should just learn to ride the wave when it comes.
Whatever happened to Beyond 2000? I used to watch that all the time, then I got busy with work for a year or two and the show's gone. In addition to showing some pretty nifty cutting edge stuff, they had some smoking hot reporters.:)
It was less their customer service and more their ability to create games that interest me for the long term. I preordered EQ2 and started playing it from day #1, buying into their policy of having a meaninful purpose for every character class. So I took a scout, and when I hit my mid 20's I found it was so completely horrible for soloing that the game was unplayable. That is, unless I was grouping with a full, balanced group of people. In other words, playing the game precisely as SOE dictates it should be played.
I'm not some anti-social loner in these games, I enjoy grouping with others. But there are days when I log in and I just want to play the game solo (and I'm not talking about just doing courier quests and boring crap like that), and that option just doesn't exist in the game. There was one level there where I could only solo hunt in *two* areas of Antonica. Repeated posts in the forums to the developers regarding this issue from myself and many others went answered only with new solo quests, no new solo mobs of any real substance.
It seems to be like that with many of their efforts, so I've given up on their games. I've always been much more pleased with efforts like EVE Online, DAoC, CoH, and WoW.
It is painfully true, and I've indicated this to SOE by cancelling any active subscriptions I had with them. That being said, that post was a riot mostly because I visualize things like that. And I could easily picture SOE's CS dept. being exactly that.
I'm sorry, I doubt a sizable percentage of the population who buys iPods are requesting an FM tuner to be in them. If there was anything on radio worth listening to, iPod sales wouldn't be quite so high.
Just taking a guess here, but it could be less about programmers propping up their job, and more about the companies they work for having to deal with a whole lot of clients who are now faced with no support for the applications they've been given. I'm not saying VB is at all superior to more modern languages out there, but I've been involved in a lot of contracts where this kind of thing has happened and it's not pretty, especially when clients are told they might need their applications redeveloped.
To Blizzard's defense, they ARE working on PvP battlegrounds which should be familair to DAoC folks like myself. I like what they're planning to do with it. However I agree, one runs out of things to do very very rapidly with WoW, and I too have cancelled my account until something interesting happens in the game.
With regards to the social aspect to the game, I'll agree it just isn't there. Every zone I go to it's always some kind of flamewar between a bunch of 12 year olds, and there doesn't seem to be any real working mechanism to find mature players to group with.
I didn't say it would give it any additional abilities, I was simply correcting. But from my own personal experience I'd rather buy something that comes with the package rather than having to buy it later as an add-on.
Incorrect. The XBox did not have it, it's an adapter you must buy to get wifi connectivity. The distinction here is that the Revo will come with it built in.
Why is this a concern now that the Nintendo Revo mentions they're going to have this ability? There are wireless connection options for the PS2 and Xbox, I didn't see anyone voicing these concerns when they came out. Quite the contrary.
Why NOT WiFi? Nobody said they weren't providing cable-based connectivity as well. And it's not like it's a base station, so if you're running an insecure wireless LAN at home right now it's not like adding a Nintendo Revo to it will make things worse for you. This just simplifies your connectivity for online play, which in my opinion is the best thing Nintendo can do considering how much it improves the console based online connectivity situation.
And just a comment on the bit about latest technology, 3 out of 4 of the games you listed there use the latest technology not so much for the game itself, but for the engine. Engine sales/licensing are really what drive the companies behind those games, so of course they'll be using the best technology at the expense of fulfilling game experiences.
... for not only reporting this to the public, but for offering to represent the viewpoints of those being shut out:
EFF is accredited as a WIPO permanent observer and will be attending the meetings. The group will be reporting on the proceedings and will attempt to represent the viewpoints of some of the other public interest groups that are being excluded from the process.
Lots of people sounding off about how this is a bad idea, but there's nothing in TFA that indicates anyone will be forced into using this with games they develop. Those concerned about games like hl2 and such with modding communities, well, I'm pretty sure we will see Valve not using the T&P philosophy, relying on normal method of installing the software to the drive (through physical media or downloads). That's just one example of course.
I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of games that will benefit from T&P's ease. Games like Myst for example need not install much to the drive at all to function, and T&P would work very well there. Personally I think Microsoft and consumers would see the most benefit from this technology if you had the CHOICE to either play a game with T&P or go through conventional install processes.
Doesn't iTunes also have this option? Ir is it as the article poster states, that it takes a value based on the whole song and uses that to scale back the volume?
How quickly we all forget how last year Nintendo knocked the price of the Gamecube down, and the almost literally flew off the shelves. Lots of sales of hardware = lots more sales of software = $$$ for Nintendo.
Not that I want to hijack the overall thread and turn it into a game review, but I'm pretty curious about this one and I haven't seen many reviews about it. Would you mind doing a bit of a writeup about it?
Agreed, it's definitely the bigger news here. I for one am all for the replacement of the current MS regime with people who have proven track records of doing innovative things. I'm a firm believer that no matter how many companies Microsoft acquires, they'll still fall behind to the forward thinking groups like Apple. It's the people that count, and (excuse me while I blue sky for a moment) maybe we'll start seeing some actual bonafide innovation in Microsoft's products now.
I can never get over small the scope is when determining what games are eligible for winning. World of Warcraft winning for visuals? Ok it runs smooth and the environments are well constructed, but look no further than EVE Online for a game that literally looks like space art in motion. Put simply, the game is beautiful, and doesn't require a top of the line computer to run properly. Technically speaking, that alone is an achievement in engine design.
I guess if a game doesn't have a huge following or massive launch it's not win worthy?
If you really want to argue semantics of this, lets take it way back to video gaming back before consoles, when video gaming was solely found in arcades. To that end, shouldn't we be seeing something like Pac Man getting a star?
Agreed. One of the main reasons I bought a Mac recently was because of the OS. I'd got so sick of the constant maintainance required with XP that I wanted at least one computer that I don't have to go insane over to keep it clean. That and OSX is just so damn hot to use. Everyone who's come by my place spots the thing and questions whether you're playing for the other team now. Then you play a DVD, have a few browser windows open with flash, and some Quicktimes going, and press shift-F9. That Expose demo always gets em:)
Isn't the whole point of a virtual reality is that it's an abstract representation of data, not a purely 100%-like-the-real-world type of environment? Read any Gibson novel and you'll see the most interesting part of VR is how different it is from our reality. More modern representations seem to favor realism over anything else (Matrix, eXistenZ, etc.), but I find it hard to be in awe of an environment so real it's the same as the real thing.

I'm sure if the headline had been written as you suggest, it would probably have been rejected by the editors.

I always thought it was too damn short anyawy.

If they can scrounge up millions to try to keep Enterprise on the air, I'm sure funding ACTUAL REAL SCIENCE should be a more worthwhile cause.

This will surely improve the realism of boobie bounce. :)
