    ...and allocate a bit more on a graphics card and a bit less on a fast processor that isn't really required?

    A $1000 pc that can't play games such as Doom 3 is probably an overpriced, underspecced e-machines with onboard graphics...don't waste your money, you are being ripped off. Buy the components and build it yourself.

    And some people claim that id know how to optimise code :-)

    I'm sorry, a game that looks as nice as doom 3, running on an athlon XP 1800 (1.53 ghz), and a bottom of the range Geforce FX 5200 actually getting more than 10 fps (and often up into 40-50 territory) is a major achievement in my book, the guys at Id pretty much wrote the current book when it comes to game engines.

    I disagree, I think (especially in the case of the genome) it holds all of humanity back. The people who run the USPTO office need to be put on trial for crimes against humanity. Either that, or we need a massive review of patenting, run by an independant commission with no partisan or business links librarians or priests or somesuch, someone who isn't the bitch of big business (this means you Orin Hatch).

    You do realise that overseas sales of Heinz products are probably higher than US levels. You're not the only ones who put ketchup on your burgers. It makes far more sense to produce in the market you are selling in than to export to that market. This is not off-shoring, that's farming out work to other countries for products sold only in the U.S., so software, call-centres and nike factories (sweatshops) are all off-shoring.

    Normally a claim of this sort would require a crime reference number from the police. So, you are not only committing fraud but also wasting police time and attempting to pervert the course of justice (these are all english terms, it may be different in the US of A).

    Their underwriters will probably also investigate, plus look at what the police have said (and if they say that only your fingerprints were found on the lock you're up shit creek without a paddle).

    ...from where I'm standing, Miguel is not an innovator, he just says "wow cool, wish I could have thought of that " and copies it.

    Now I'm not bashing his managerial skills (he got mono done very quickly) or his coding skills, but open source needs idea people, not the "me too"'s of this world.

    ...copyright infringement (it is not theft) is a civil offence. Murder is not.

    Murder is one of those in-grained things that humans find abhorrent (unless they like wearing masks and beheading strangers). Copyright infringement and intellectual property are relatively new concepts in human evolution.

    medium quality, specular on, bumpmapping on, everything else off. Driver set to performance mode. The lowest I have seen the fps counter go is 12. Most of the time, wandering around corridors it's up around 40-45. With several monsters on the screen and/or a big room of course the framerates are at the lowest end (12 fps), but it's still playable and it still looks sweet.

    If anything I'll probably play it on this and hold off upgrading my rig until half-life 2 comes out (gives me 4 more years to save...woohoo! ;o).

    Other specs, it's playing off a second hd (40gig) that's just used for games and audio. XP 1800+ proc and 512mb ram. So, a fairly low spec machine by todays standards, but it does me fine.

    ...a trip to the cinema to see some inane big budget "ooh...they spent lots of money making it, therefore it must rock" movie by numbers. Cell phones going off every two fscking minutes and peoples stinky armpits a few feet away.

    ~Versus~

    $50.00 for a well honed, blood-sweat-and-tears, state-of-the-art damn gorgeous and hella playable game that will give you many hours of enjoyment . I know the one I'd pick.

    You really are getting more bang for your buck buying a decent computer game. Can you sell your movie ticket on ebay after using it? Well, you can sell anything on ebay, but you'll get a lot more for a copy of doom.

    If you want to be cheap wait till it comes up in bargain bins the world over before buying it...sucks to be you missing out on all that gibbing now ;oP

    Of course, we all know that Doom 3 doesn't really cost $50. First, you'll need a new rig ~$1000 say, then factor in the cost of unemployment when you fail to turn up for work for the rest of the week. Hmmm...maybe the cinema is a better option. ;o)

    ...and you require 5 nines reliability you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think you can get what you are asking for gratis.

    Stop being so cheap and shell out some dosh with Sun if you really need fanatical support and guaranteed operation. Although, if you're supporting that many people and it's as mission critical as you are saying then cost should be no problem, so I'm inclined to think you're just trolling on the whole Java issue.

    I've stress tested my companies J2EE product on a FreeBSD box, pusing it to its limits and had zero problems, however, YMMV.

    For 99% of site designs, tables work perfectly well.

    No they don't, they can throw off screen readers which (rightly so) expect tabular data to be in tables.

    Every site I've done in the past few months has been completely xhtml and css based. Sure, the first few times took a bit longer than before, but what I find now is that it takes me less time than it used to for a table based layout! Plus, if the client comes back a few months later wanting a redesign it's much easier because my content is separate from the visual display, so all I do is reorder some divs, update the stylesheet and bam, it's much quicker and thus cheaper for my clients.

    No, the main goal is to make it as accessible as possible, then make it look good. What good is a flashy site if you cut out several % of viewers?

    ...remember when someone found out his website was using a pirated menu script that hadn't been paid for? Well, apparently it was the web-designer who used it and thus commited copyright infringement, however, Sen Orin Hatch asked (induced) him to make the site, ergo, he could be implicated, now we just have to get him to make the bill retroactive and we could put pay to him once and for all. Or someone could end his suffering and put the fuckhead to sleep like they do to lame animals, either way, I'd chuckle.

    And it wasn't really a beta, it was more for demonstrating at E3, probably late alpha quality. It probably had debugging enabled too.

    Since that time Carmack will have been working on optimisations. He's also worked out render paths for graphics cards from shit-hot down to pure shit. I would expect he would have started with the most complex and worked down from there, cutting stuff out. So what you saw before may have not yet been optimised for low-end graphics cards like yours.

    Also, while 64 MB will just about cut it, it really is the weak point of your setup. Invest in a card with at least 128 MB, one of the current crop of mid range will probably be the sweet-spot price/performance wise - and won't break the bank.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    I visited odeon.co.uk with Mozilla Firefox (a popular web browser) this week to book tickets for myself and 7 others to see Spider Man 2. Your site does not seem to work at all and I was thus forced to book tickets with one of your competitors (UGC Cinemas) who have the foresight to make their site work with other browsers and operating systems.

    I am a web developer myself and know first hand that it is not hard to produce 100% cross browser sites and respectfully suggest that if your web developers cannot do the same you should terminate their employment, they are patently unable to fulfil their job requirements.

    Your website also contravenes the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) which could leave your company open to possible civil action, not to mention bad publicity. I assume you would prefer to avoid this.

    Until this problem is resolved I will not be showing my patronage to Odeon cinemas and will recommend that my friends and acquaintances do the same.

    If I do not receive a satisfactory answer to this email I will also be passing a complaint to the relevant authorities regarding the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) infractions.

    Probably won't do any good but hey, if they want to lose customers fark em, UGC cinemas are normally better (bigger, beefier sound, comfier seats) anyway.

    ...there are very few of these machines remaining, which is what the article was saying. Originally there were 1500 Poly Plays made, but all except 3 were destroyed after the fall of the berlin wall.

    I would wager that most of the others you remember probably met the same fate.

    ...Turck mmcache, which is completely 100% free OSS (GPL) software, works as a zend extension and not only compiles to zend engine byte-code but also caches the result in ram or a mmapped file? It beats all of the other encoder/loader combo's for speed (probably one of the reasons Dmitri (the guy who wrote it) got offered a job at Zend).

    We've been running it on two of our production servers as a test over the past few months, and apart from having to recompile every new PHP release it's been rock solidly available 100% of the time - and has reduced server load to negligible levels. These are high traffic servers too, doing ~900 gigs to a terrabyte per month of traffic- all highly dynamic sites.
