1980's? Try Cold War in the 1960's, before Nixon had even opened a dialogue with China. Some of us have memories of our mothers being required to take an oath ("Better dead than Red") before being allowed to teach in public schools back then. Otherwise, I mostly agree with your post; it is entirely possible to unbundle capitalism vis-a-vis democracy, where needs be.

Kinda in the same vein of thought, I simply use multiple (virtual) desktops. Like right now, on desktop #3. Having said that, I feel somewhat compelled to welcome Novell to the FOSS community; though I do also admit to some fear and trepidation much like when IBM got invlolved. So far, I think Novell is executing quite well; they are doing things that make good sense (IMHO) from both a biz standpoint and also from a FOSS standpoint. They really do need to work on their sales dept. though. Now that they own SuSE, I'm not sure about this whole Gnome thing. Don't get me wrong, I use Gnome and like it. But isn't SuSE already well-known for their QT/KDE support? Isn't it gonna cost something to convert? So, I am basically wondering "Why?". Far as Gnome goes, I would love for them to revert back to plain txt config files and Enlightenment by default. Now with SuSE and YaST at the core, with directory and zen works on top of that. gotta dream, anyway.

I've got some news for you; depending upon how Linus Torvalds declared his citizenship, it probably depends quite a bit. Furthermore, the word "act" *does* mean legal action around here anyway. It is a valid legal issue, and IMHO common sense doesn't have a lot to do with it.

Current USA Federal law recognizes 4 forms of IP:

    (1) Copyright
    (2) Patents
    (3) Trade marks or Trade Names
    (4) Trade secrets

It doesn't matter whether cardboard is a good Kleenex material; what matters is whether Linus can use the "Kleenex" name. In the same way, it doesn't matter whether or not you or I can use the "linux" name; what matters is whether or not you or I have the rights to do so. And IMHO that is where it's falling apart.

It's funny, it all seemed so innocent and fun back in those heady days of youth, but knowing what I know now, it is painful to even think of the depths to which I sunk. It's not even like I can say that I started off on the wrong foot but so many others were doing it that, eventually, I succumbed to temptation. Worse, even to this day, I am still forced to do things I'm too embarrassed to admit--all because of youthful indiscretion.

To show that I didn't start off wrong, I will say that the first computer I owned was an Apple IIe. I moved on to various Mac incarnations and processor families, but eventually . . .

I programmed in VB. A lot. Too much. I try to tell myself that the C classes as an undergrad kept it from turning my brain into complete mush--I even railed at the memory footprint and consciously tried to write code that wouldn't be Atul-like, but I'm certain that the years have had a deletorious effect.

I'll hang my head in shame and perhaps even stay away for a bit, but I thought it would be better if you heard from me instead of the someone on the other side.

May as well get it all out, xxx-xxxx wrote in message xxxxxx:

I don't expect anyone to agree with the ugly choices I made in my youth, but I hope you understand that I am trying to atone--and the VB I'm forced to touch now is only occasional and I no longer take joy in it. "
