I made a similar comment about wine, and the so-called experts.
I've had $40-50 per lb coffee (Kona or other Hawaiian coffees) that was just ok, and I've have $8 per lb coffee that was terrific (several of Trader Joe's organic fair trade coffee are really, really damn good, and only run like ~ $8-9).
Reminds me of the many blind studies show how 'experts' on wine are very often totally full of shit -- which is why my eyes begin to roll when I hear people throwing around their pretentious adjectives when describing their favorite Cabernet or whatever.
And many Americans want to think of the US as the hero of WWII. Really, it was Britain. They were fighting alone for almost 2 years until the US got off its ass an entered the war -- and only after Pearl Harbor.
Something like only 10% of Americans wanted to get involved and/or help Britain before Pearl Harbor, even though they were getting pounded during The Blitz, civilians killed, cities on fire, etc. (not to mention what was happening in the rest of mainland Europe) The US did nothing, sent some supplies after a while, but that was it until Pearl. And Britain lost 10x as many civilians alone during the blitz as the us lost military personnel in Pearl.
Sure, US industrial strength and involvement was critical as the war progressed, but the war would have been over before the US entered if it weren't for the pilots who fought in The Battle of Britain, the country enduring The Blitz, along with everything else they did.
"That is just speculation based on your wishful thinking."
WRONG again. AmiMoJo is correct, there have been many, many studies -- if you bothered to look, showing bias in hiring based on things like gender or names (preference towards European for example)
The wishful thinking (that gender bias doesn't exist to any meaningful extent) is on your part, not AmiMoJo's.
As I said, this guys is actually making the case for the article -- he's making assumptions based on gender without facts, and facts won't change his mind.
" logic related profession there is a real biological gap, and no it is not social: "
REALLY ? Please oh wise one, some citations? You are the PERFECT example of what the article is pointing out, you have drawn your gender-based conclusions with ZERO facts or evidence.
"Men and women are quite different in many things" And the kids get drilled into their heads, that 'boys are better at math and science' for their whole lives, did you think for just one minute, that MIGHT affect their choices as college bound teens/adults?
For fuck's sake, that's not being pc, it's called socialization and constrained gender roles.
The old 'boys are better at math and science' crap still exists today, and it serves no one.
Even at my daughter's school (which is considered one of the better prep schools in the region), I was dismayed that their competitive robotics club has 1 girl (out of like 12). I was a bit p*ssed when I asked the headmaster about this during a parent's meeting and he answer was basically that more boys are drawn to the club than girls. I was thinking, 'yeah.. no f-cking sh*t Sherlock, but did you consider WHY this is the case and what are you doing about it?' Needless to say, I was unimpressed by his answer and it's certainly made me reconsider just how 'progressive' this school really is when the person leading it has that kind of attitude.
My own example aside, I think plenty of people in academia, technical professional positions, etc still have this attitude, and it's bad for the kids, and our competitiveness as a nation. Some of the sharpest women programmers/engineers I've known are from India, not exactly the bastion of gender equality, and yet...
Just curious, have you ever had an extended period of silence, like hours or days? Why I ask is this, most people have some ringing in total silence (which is rare because we live with SO much background noise these days), but it settles down after an extensive period of being in silence or near silent conditions. Whenever I go backpacking somewhere very remote, my ears ring like hell for the first day or so, by the 2nd or 3rd day, not so much.
But if it's always there, you may have tinnitus, which unfortunately medicine been able to cure/resolve yet...:/
I was given a Keurig as a gift -- even their strongest coffee is just ok and just passable imo. It's handy for when guests come over I guess (about the only time I use it), but personally I like my good old fashioned french press way more. This kind of crap will only make me use it less, and certainly never replace their machine.
Given the cost of the machine, and that single serves k-cups run about.50-1.00, they're really not a good deal, especially compared to the buying/grinding your own and using a french press.. I can get surprisingly good whole bean coffee from Trader Joe's (organic and fair trade, a plus) for like ~$9 lb. I haven't done the math, but I get a shitload more coffee that way than from those pissy little cups, AND it's much better.
You can get a mini basket filter to use in a keurig instead of a k-cup, but they're so small (and messy) that they don't make a strong enough cup for me.
I also have guilt over how fucking wasteful those stupid k-cups are, for one little cup of joe. I even save the grinds from my press for the plants, they love it.
I wouldn't even blink if Keurig went away, eff them.
For those who don't know, the most common second language(s) in British Columbia are the major Chinese dialects. Some people refer to Vancouver as Hongcouver because of the influx of Chinese after the Hong Kong changeover to western Canada. They've brought a lot of money and business with them.
Anyway... everything has to be bilingual (French and English) in even Vancouver where very, very people speak French, and there's nothing requiring signs in Chinese. It costs a fortune for every business in Canada to have to do this, BUT yet when you go to Quebec, it's perfectly ok for signs (even #@$! road signs) to be ONLY in French,
THIS is why so many English speaking Canadians get so pissed at the Quebecois
Actually one of the strongest memories I have as a young child was coming across a horseshoe crab at a beach, it was in shallow water -- and it both scared the sh*t out of me, and had me intensely fascinated for a good long while. When an adult picked it up so I could see its underside and all those moving legs, I was absolutely, positively, enthralled. Nothing forgettable about it...
If you look at the source that 'Bacon Bits' posted -- what I see if a pretty dubious, random post on Reddit, that PC Pro picked up. Nowhere do I see any actual evidence that anyone, other than a troll, or some kid just posted. This is about as useful an article as something 'my friend heard from his cousin's mom's next door neighbor's mother-in-law..."
There are so many great online professional sites with tips, tools, tutorials, etc., plus great publishers like WROX press, O'Reilly etc if you want to go that route. I tend to do both
The bulk of my development skills were self-taught or learned on the job, I don't even have a CS degree (I changed career paths), and I work exactly in the areas you described; C#, ASP,.NET, SQL, etc.
Seriously, I don't think it makes sense, and for gawd's sake DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, go to place like Phoenix or Capella, they are a joke and not a single person in IT I know puts ANY value on those kinds of places.
Regardless of one's feelings about Snowden, I think it's pretty clear these changes (IF actually implemented) are a result of him opening peoples' eyes to the extent of the surveillance and spying on the American people. We seriously owe him, big time imo.
As an left-leaning independent, I was generally optimistic about Obama entering office, sadly, not so much any more --- NOT that I think things would be better under Republicans mind you, who seem to say 'less government' only in regards to their corporate overlords, but are heavy handed in wanting to legislate their personal morality (gay marriage/rights, religion, women's issues, etc)
Many days I wish the US had a parliamentary system such as England or Canada, this two party sh*t if for the birds. At least in those countries, minority parties can actually gets seats and have some representation -- here, we are stuck with two lame ass parties.
Actually I think/. should just stop letting ACs post at all, since 95%+ of the time is just trolling/flamebait, or some unstable person ranting like a lunatic. Please by all means, leave/. and never come back.
I wish they'd delete all replies other than yours, then lock down the thread -- because it's a silly debate (no single piece of tech will EVER be THE future of technology)
... and your repeatedly discredited, disproved autism-vaccine crap. Though I should blame the idiots who actually listen to a plastic bimbo like you for medical advice, I still hold you accountable in large part. People have DIED because of you, b*tch.
I'm so fucking sick and tired of selfish, narcissistic assholes risking everyone else's lives for whatever stupid text etc they HAVE to type/reply to. (I don't care if they kill themselves honestly, just don't take anyone else out with you).
Just last week, a busy intersection that I drive through every day to take my young daughter to and from school, had its second fatality in a few weeks. BOTH times, texting or cell phone usage was involved, both drivers completely blew through the red and t-boned some innocent person. Of course in both cases, the ahole who caused the accident didn't die.
They need to make the penalty on par with DUIs, suspension and/or loss of driving privileges and even jail time. Enough is fucking enough...
IF they were a good business, I'd be sorry for their loss. But they f*cked the independent mom and pop shops over, then when they got their monopoly, charged ridiculous prices, bs late fees, tons of hidden costs, and carried crap (100 copies of the latest blockbusters and hardly anything alternative, non-mainstream, european or asian, etc).
The way they treated their customers, people were begging for an alternative, and once they came -- people ran as fast as they could.

"cherry picking exception cases" Here's a mirror for you.
So some random YouTube videos from some wannabe comedians that you keep linking to is your non-biased scientific evidence? Yeah, sure, ok.
I'm starting to think you're just a troll.

For all the fun, interesting, likable mom and pop shops that places like BB drove out of business I say --- karma baby, karma.
I watch with the same glee as Barnes & Noble (Burns Ignoble) struggles, they killed the independent bookstore, and now Amazon et. al is killing them.
