Yes it is. Since Mosaic if memory doesn't fail me. And that is way to far away in time!
The fact that some sites don't perform browser identification it is of no value for the question at hand.
For reference of a case like this there is the "Samba" scuffle that happened in Germany where a sleasy lawyer tryed to "defend" a german trademark for "Samba"...
Well... let's face it, it was/is bound to happen and the fault is only in one side...
Those pesky laws about copyright and ip and the like that have the effect to add value to the wrong hands.
In the former days, those laws arrised from the necessity of protecting the author/inventor. Now those laws are used to rip off authors and inventors and to give protection to corps.
"Who is Nicole Kidman? I only buy Universal movies..." - someone said...
Will there are DVD's that don't play in my computer i could care less!
When DVD's start be shipped without zoning, without crypto, then i will start to get an interest in "published" DVD's... till then, it's just a curiosity technology like many others...
But a sintome of the problem. The problem is Liberty and Democracy and all those frenchy things that are older then america (or about the same time)...
A better approach is the danish electric grid... they allow for particulars to own power generators.
Several groups of people have join in cooperatives to buy wind generators and thrus not only they produce "green" power, but also they have an investment which have a turnover in more or less 5 years... (which in current economic turmoil is not bad).
Not really, if you provide a historical database with dates, versions and the like it will get the same treatment as a museam or a library and thrus will fall in the educational/fair use allowances...
The only problem i see is timing... There is a time for grow, a time for setup and a time for resize...
It is always time for setup... as business must be as usual and thrus new companies/businesses/projects must start at any time...
As for grow/shrink, the problem is correlate all the economic environment and determine the correct time for each.
To a project as LWN it seams that it is essencially a time to rethink the whole project and make a huge downsize in it's costs.
What i would like to see was the company/project make the downsize without needing to grow the unemployment row by cutting jobs without making alternatives.
IT IS THE MORAL OBLIGATION OF COMPANIES TO PROPOSE SOLUTIONS FOR THE POTENCIAL EX-EMPLOYEDS... But allas we live in a imoral time...
Sony may want to make PS1/PS2 a proprietary hardware and induce you to belive that it is. Another thing is it be one of such.
They can make all those "proibitions" in their EULAS, but they are forgeting 2 small things... 1st buyer rights.
There is no such think as proprietary hardware anywhere... and you just falled in the sony FUD...
The maximum that happens is that you forfeit all warranties if you change the thing... but that is as expected, because when you modify an equipment it stops from be the original equipment anymore...
And more, you should change the box and some more items to add a minimal percentage of workmanship in the mod...
That way, you are trully making a new machine... (of course you can't sell it as such, or can you? after all you already paid for those authorization to use the device...).
Cheers...
P.S.- I just wished that things where more simpler as in the beginning of XX century... when patents where patents and the law was the law...
Not really... It all dependes on how is making the mod and for who...
If you do your own mod chip and use it for you own purposes, like... placing a PS1 as a meteo controling station using a program made by you i doubt that DMCA ever goes to apply...
BUT alas... the "legislators" [or more exactly stating the illigators] seam to be keen to make laws that are against international trade aggreaments and the like and protect those that engage in such activities... [like DVD zonning that is against the international trading laws, but i digress]
Just as we thrusted enron, worldcom, xerox and all others with "mis-calculated" books...
Normally a warrantie of that kind can only be accerted by an independent body... which in that case doesn't exist. So the company warrantie is useless because it doesn't exist at all...
How gullable are the americans... it is an amazement...
cheers...
What do you think a version number on any software means? Do you think microsoft released 2000 windows? (actually it may have... but that's not the issue here lol)...
Cheers...
That one surprised me, why would you think that? It seems that regarding the basic setup the US patent system is virtually indistinguishable from any European one.
Exactly... the major diference isn't legal, but the implementation of the "governamental" departments that handle patents...
And... btw... both systems sux... as they failed to evolve to modern age societies.
I've subscribed for updates on that campaign and haven't received any yet...
Does it really exist or is just PR FUD (as usually is)?
Cheers...
I don't think so.
Human rights is a thing recognized by the majority of the countries.
Companies aren't recognized as citizens in the majority of the countries (they are in US).
So implying that they have human rights is wrong.
They have rights and obligations, but they are diferent from the human rights (and in most cases nothing in common with them).
That patent is obviously a human rights terrorist attack to free will.
Cheers...
I would buy diamonds if:
a) they where the cheaper industrial products that the russians seam to exceel in doing;
b) would need them for something;
c) the price fits the marchandise (which in the case of natural diamonds doesn't, because its a piece of carbon too expensive for its worth);
Cheers...
Personnally i think they are almost bankrupt and need an urgent influx of capital...
So they start to look at all those IP that they spend the shareholders money to protect and now they remember that they have to protect them.
Good luck...

TOO LATE!
I would start a monopoly as they are now unrestricted...

True, but betamax still rules in the professional segment...

The report should only have 404 pages...
Page not found!
For that you need to start programming in assembler... preferibly at micro-code level!
THAT IS PERFORMANCE!
(but IMHO that is not why there is Java...)
Cheers...

And it is called MS Law... and is enforced thru the Windows Activation Program...
I must say... the hardware producers must be smiling... with all those sales that they will lose...
Cheers...
Legal advice is only available thru a registered lawyer directly. Anything else are just opinions!
Including this...

Cheers...
WRONG...

Mono will survive because M$ is reported to be porting .NET to BSD...
So... there will be a trunk for GNU/Linux...
And any other OS that gets inspiration from BSD...
Cheers...
P.S.- I would suspect that XP is based in BSD but as i don't have access to XP sources or time to stroll at BSD sources... alas...
