If you are a frequent traveler, you will have your laptop in a laptop bag where you can comfortably carry much more than a 5 lb laptop. As far as size goes, you still have the same L x W which means it will take up roughly the same amount of space. It only got smaller in the thickness, and frankly, thats the least important when considering effective size. If Apple had removed the thick bezel from around the screen and removed the extra space on either side of the keyboard they would have made it a lot more portable even if it meant leaving it as thick as the regular macbook.
Why don't you use the regular macbook as competition. It has the same footprint and screen, a faster processor, a DVD burner, ethernet, multiple usb, removable battery, upgradeable ram, etc. for a lot lower price.
The Air sacrifices a ton of handy capabilities/usablility to shave off a pound or so and get slightly thinner.
A fool and his money are soon parted. Seriously, you could have purchased the regular macbook for cheaper and had a good, highly portable second computer. The Airbook has the same footprint as the regular macbook, and sacrifices a lot of functionality to be a 1/4" thinner.
If researchers want better access to data, then they need to play by the rules. Netflix data was to be used to figure out a better recommendation algorithm, not to crosslink to IMDB in an attempt to expose peoples identity. I would have hoped that the researchers would have had more respect for people than that.
Apple released some nice products today, but had some disappointing moments as well. First, the new ipod classic looks nice and the bump to 160gb is nice. The other announcements were not as exciting. The new nano looks ugly and didn't get a storage bump. The ipod touch looks very nice, but they should have used the 160gb hdd from the classic instead of flash.
The iPhone news was the biggest let down. For all the talk of Apple "redefining" the cellphone industry, the event today showed that they have no intentions of being anything other than just another gouger. The write-up was wrong. Ringtones aren't $0.99, they are $0.99 for songs that you purchased already from itunes, so they are $1.98 and you can't use music that you got from other sources.
The other nice move was dropping the price on the iphone. I personally think this is a great move, even if it is a slap in the face to all the early adopters (henceforth referred to as "suckers"). It was also a nice fuck-in-the-ass to all the ebayers who are sitting on $200 losses now.
Good luck convincing anyone that your hacker tools are only meant to be used in a professional, responsible manner, when you don't act responsibly yourself.
n 2002, Fyodor was the victim of an impersonation attack by a Slashdot user who was posing as a woman. Fyodor sent an email to the fake "woman" in an attempt to solicit further conversation and a possible meeting. When the hoax was revealed, the hoaxer insulted fyodor (I believe the word was "wanker").
Fyodor responded by using information disclosure vulnerabilities in yahoo email to find the originating IP address of the Slashdot prankster (SumDeusExMachine) who was at the time a college student based on the Pacific coast. SDEM was using an open X server for windows, MI/X, with no security enabled. Fyodor quickly scanned SDEM's box, found the open X server, and attached to it, monitoring SDEM's life for nine hours. He took many screen shots of SDEM's machine and posted them to his web site, insecure.org.
What you have to understand is that illegal and malicious hacking won't land you in jail. The FBI won't prosecute interstate computer hacking unless there are $5000 or more in damages. In this case, there were no damages, rending the "crime" unprosecuteable. Whether this makes the perpetrator a whitehat, greyhat, or blackhat is an exercise for the reader.
How fast are these cards? I know that Apple recently updated the MBPs and will probably follow up with imac updates also. Other than dx10 support, how does the 8600 compare with say the 7600s??
Every intel mac ships with a "trusted" computing module and apple uses DRM on every tune or movie they sell. You can't burn itunes tv shows to DVD, you can't transfer music from an ipod to a computer (easily), you can't transfer DRMd songs to any player but an ipod.
Anyone that thinks Apple is better than Microsoft needs to take a history lesson. Apple acts exactly like microsoft, but is too small to be effective. Hell, the only reason we use PCs today and not macs is Steve Jobs wanted the whole computer pie and wouldn't settle for just controlling the operating system.
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - veternarian/croc hunter Steve Irwin was found dead in his Queensland home this morning. There were not any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you did not enjoy his work, there is no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an Australian icon.
I'm just guessing, but that may be an error and he may have meant ELF, or Earth Liberation Front, an environmental organization. In March 2001, they were considered the top domestic terror threat by the FBI for their roles in many arson/vandalism cases.
I don't know about you, but I usually keep the side of my PC closed and could really give a flying fuck how cables I don't see are arranged. The part of the computer I look at the most is the screen, not the inside of the tower. If you feel like paying extra to have the inside of your case look nice, you are free to buy a Voodoo PC. If apple spent more time worrying about function and less time worrying about form, we wouldn't have whining MBPs, Minis with tiny harddrives, or mooing Macbooks.
Toolless chassis are a dime a dozen, and it isn't all that impressive coming from apple.
but I must admit that MS has done a lot better job with Xbox360 than they did with the first Xbox. Everyone that has a 360 raves about Live and the Arcade and downloading demos. By the time PS3 comes out, the 360 will have a solid library of full titles and a ton of the arcade games. Developers will have had the system in their hands for a while and will be able to utilize the system better.
If MS can deliver a solid price drop (maybe $250 to $300 for the premium system, dropping the core model) by the time wii and PS3 arrive, the other consoles are going to have a much harder time launching in the US and Europe. Japan will be a tough place for MS due to their lack of gay/jap games, and they should focus their efforts elsewhere.

If researchers use it irresponsibly, then they can't be trusted with access to it. Way to ruin a good thing guys.
This story is titled "NBC to offer FREE download service"... Nobody is going to buy episodes with commercials, we are going to get them for free.
Instead of buying shows on iTunes and getting ripped off, I can just download them from NBC. Kudos to NBC for making things better instead of worse.
Replying to this so I can see it forever,

Somehow, I don't think thats the real story.

Now the iPhone is like a smartphone from 3 years ago!

of course if you actually look at the screenshot, the cleartype ß looks better than the top one.

Not going to happen. Apple's version of a media center is using frontrow to play movies and TV you buy off iTMS.
The mistake apple made with the cube was price. A minimally expandable cube was the same price as a fully expandable powermac.

If I want to switch to a different program, I click on its icon in the dock and it moves it on top of the other windows.

mobile OS. Having 1 set of menus and a dock for applications would work really well on a vertical screen.

Who liked MacOS prior to OSX?
What were you smoking?
Where can I buy some?
then yes, I suppose they are. Assuming 20c/kwh, you would waste a whopping $3.50 a year by keeping your PS2 plugged in all the time.
