  2. Known problem with Linksys on P2P Traffic Shaping For Home Use? · · Score: 2, Informative

    From the uTorrent FAQ: "The default firmware for Linksys (and all replacement firmwares except for the latest DD-WRT and HyperWRT Thibor) have a severe problem where they track old connections for FIVE days, which causes the router to hang when using P2P apps, or any software that generates a lot of connections. DHT only aggravates the situation because of the number of connections it generates."

    Does NOT apply to WRT54G/GS v5 and up.

    Are you kidding me? I can't think of any hardware from Apple for which there isn't a cheaper alternative from a competitor. Apple hardware is a fashion accessory as much as it is anything else, for that you pay a premium. What makes you think it would be any different if they released something similar to the ultra-compact machines, we are seeing from ASUS, HP, OLPC.

  4. Re:I want my cut! on Collective Licensing for Web-Based Music Distribution · · Score: 1

    Wait a second. To me $100 per month sounds like a good deal.
    I currently pay around $50 for my cable internet and $100 for dish, then there's bills for netflix, audible, and my music and book purchases on Amazon, let's say the total is about $250 per month.
    In the scenario you provide, I could cancel everything but my internet service, and use an over the air antenna for local TV. Everything else I would download from the net (with the exception of physical books from Amazon).
    Granted, this wouldn't be the same scenario for everyone, but I bet that most people would come close to spending $100 per month on all the things you list above.

    But wait there's more;
    • mythbuntu

    Don't search meta tags, search the content. Adding meta tags to documents is time-comsuming, unreliable are difficult to maintain. If you index the content of the files to be searched you don't run the risk of missing a vital nugget of information buried deep in a document. I have used ISYS for years to do just this. It's easy to set up and maintain, fast and accurate and indexes files the Google desktop won't touch.

    People have been justifiably complaining for years of having to buy whole albums just to get one or two songs they want.
    I've never understood the complaint. What most people want is the single they've been hearing on the radio. If you just want that song, go buy the single, what is difficult to understand about that. Granted not all songs are available as a single, but as I said before I bet 99% of people want the song they've heard on the radio amd I bet most of the individual songs bought on iTunes et al are those very same songs. The revolution is in the delivery method.

    Perhaps because it is difficult to write about. It's easy to write about inserting and retrieving data from a database. Newbies get a feeling of accomplishment that they have "made something happen" with these kinds of books. You don't get that when you slog through a bunch of validation routines.
