OpenGL..I think that says it all. DirectX is a great platform, don't get me wrong. It does its job. But what happens when DirectX doesn't do what the programmer wants/needs it to do? Too bad, gotta wait for DirectX (current version + 1.0). What happens when you want to release your software for more than one platform? Out of luck here.
I think there are quite clear advantages.
Read my mind - I'm E-3 atm. In charge of about 1,500 workstations/servers as well. No BS here, the AF does spend quite a bit of dough on R&D instead of paying their (well, enlisted) people.
I'm a USAF member, and at the office lately we've been tossing around this interesting subject. Honestly, the article presented in the story was pretty lame; here's a few good links we've come up with, if you want to know a bit more about the technology:
Not really anything new here; "The Man" can see what I'm doing right now, where I'm going, whether or not I'm logged in to a site (including my username and password), how long I've been on a certain page, etc etc etc - And he doesn't need a kiddie script to do it. That's just part of working for the DoD or any other institution that has full monitoring instilled in their computer use policy, I guess.
Not like that's their only income (duh), and I'm sure more than 4 games have been licensed. I was merely stating that I'm sure they've milked enough cash from one source and can more or less afford to GPL it rather than make a "petty" $100 or $200 per developer.
It looks like thats exactly what the product is aimed at - even Internet Appliances, too...libraries, schools, net cafes, places where novice computer users are going to be. It's a neat idea..it looks good enough at least..I'm not in a hurry to try it out tho.
And of everything we are taught, one issue is always paramount - in America, it is the people who rule.
This couldn't be more false, in my opinion. I have written, called, e-mailed, and written, called, and e-mailed again, my congresspeople and senators, and I have a stack of e-mails and letters all stating the same generic thing: "I agree with you, but here's how I feel, and why." What does it take to get results from the people that we voted into power? The efforts of people like myself seem to only hold back extreme pieces of legislature that would completely abolish any control of power by the people. I guess that I am just disappointed by the people we "hired" to be in our government. Even one of my reps stated over and over again that he would support Internet Radio and MP3. Now he firmly denies any claim. How similar are your representatives?
Beer 5.0 will have, no doubt, a huge security hole that will allow any user to root your box with minimal effort. This will inevitably become a 'feature' in the software, as Microsoft coders will have absolutely no idea how to fix it.
so, what about Ximian Evolution? I use it daily to connect to our Exchange server. Many folks in the office prefer it to Outlook 2000/XP and generally have no problem because it is so similar to its M$ counterparts.
As for the remote desktop client..errmm...Migrate 'em to Linux and use OpenSSH!;)
to subscribe to Bugtraq or a similar security mailing list. Especially you guys that run any type of server. Securityfocus is your friend; they'll have these advisories far in advance of any other place on the net.
This is all true. That's why I'm not able to get wireless, DSL, cable, or even ISDN. If I had the money for a T-1, I would not be able to get it because I live on a government installation. I sure hope someone can convince the g-man that us guys want some bandwhiffs too...
Boot CD's are fine and dandy, but what if you screw up your autoexec.bat or config.sys and can't boot? What if you need a utility you forgot to copy to CD? What if you'd like to USE that 698MB you just WASTED?
You might say, "CD-RW", but not every drive on the planet can read CD-RW's.
Floppies are just so universal; their only limitation is lack of space.

AGP4X vs. AGP8X
·
· Score: -1
Yeah I wholeheartedly agree - If AGP8x is anything like ATA-133 - No version of Windows supports it (but Linux does, muhaha) and it performs more or less like the last big standard. But, I could be wrong...
Pricey indeed. The complete specs for the A1000 they put together is on their site. I'm sure if you badger them for the complete specs on the NES or A2600 they'll tell you. There's no custom-manufactured hardware in there; this is just a pricewatch or ebay affair here, folks. Even the "adapted" NES controllers they're selling for $40 (!!!!) are available on the net, or you could even make them yourself. But, whatever, the 40-50% profit they're making is alright with me, if I find the urge to have a PC in an NES case, I'll do the research and build it myself...
If you're interested in Small Form Factor (SFF) stuff, I'd suggest this forum.
..And now I can't get anyone out of my office! Thankfully this is only ONE day out of the year that I have to put up with these...people...and they're asking..questions...about what I do here...gRRRrrR!
Understandable, but when was the last time Joe home-user could download Direct3D by itself?

ok, so when does DVD flop and movies start coming on 2 CD's, one for video and one for audio? My CD changer becomes my movie player..
..need to get the following tool, ASAP: CDex.
This format might tickle your fancy a bit more than WMA ever did. It sure as heck sounds better.

$250,000? Sounds like they made enough money already. I can think of at least 4 games that use the Q3 engine...that's quite a chunk of cash.
I'll definitely be getting a Windows-free Dell!

holy crap, i'm still trying to figure out how to pronounce the CEO's name..."Eid Eid"...WTF?
yeah, it'd be great to see BeOS on the GPL license real soon.

and appearently for the VIA crew, some stability and/or compatibility would be in order...
w00t! Now I can *watch* my Athlon XP catch on fire after I try to overclock it to 400*13!
