Eh, I think it is much more simple then all of that. SUV's are much "cooler" cars then station wagons or mini-vans. Now, you can be a parent with out driving a classic family machine.
Here is a better question then. How will the integration between the self driven cars and the cars we have now take place? New parallel highways? Segmenting of existing highways? Passed by law?
Also, I still have to agree with the above about being concerned about the car controlling the stopping distances etc.
Then, there is the issue of security. What if some one hacks all the cars. Talk about a pile up. I personnally will be a late adopter of this technology if/when it is put in place.
Then again, I am a geek that likes guns, so go figure.
I know this is most likely bait, but the issue isn't that it would cost the company less. That is easy to figure out. It is that it would cost the consumer more if they wanted to run windows if it wasn't preloaded.
Some people also believe in personal accountability and freedoms. I also understand the other side of the coin, but I would much rather that 42,000 people die every year then the government track the movements on all of their citizens. I view this as a slippery slope scenario. First, they start tracking every one. Then, you can't buy cars that you can manually control any more. You have to conform to a system to even be able to survive in the future. Yes, my way will mean that more people will die. It means that people will still speed and be jack asses on the road. However, it also means that the government can't put everywhere you go in a handy dandy database.
For instance, let's say that you a well-known Communist activist. If you drive somewhere and have a meeting, the government can now easily flag every one that was there as a possible communist with a simple query based on who had a car there. Let's even say that they don't do use it to create "activity profiles", I don't want congestion "fines" for driving through a certain part of a city. I already pay enough taxes for roads. So, then you just say that they can monitor traffic patterns etc. That can be done with current technology. A pressure plate or trip line with a camera and you can gain all the same information. However, that information is not created with a unique identifier. It can't be tied back with you unless they have some one running license plates all day. It isn't practical to have some one digging through all that data. If the system is created, how is a person going to keep from having the information logged? How are we going to be able to double check that the device sends only what it is supposed to send? This will do nothing but empower the government while being more intrusive on the individual. I don't like that idea, even if it keeps people from dying.
There are only so many people on the internet. Let's say your cnn and cnn.com was the best way for most people to access news (not saying it is, but thing hypothetical here). Now, let's say that a web site sets up a portal that does direct back to your site, but also directs links to hundreds of other sources. While you can get readers from google news, it also provides an easy way for readers of your site to start browsing through 100 other news sites they didn't even know existed. So, for smaller sites, it is good. For bigger sites, maybe not so good.
"that the time when you don't trust the government might be a few days too late to do anything."
I imagine that I will get flamed for this, but I think the statement above is very true, esp. concerning England. Personal ownership of fire arms is a much easier and, in my opinion, much more effective way of preventing crime. Violent crime in Britian as risen greatly since the fire arm ban. Bobbies are now being issued guns. If you want crime to go away, get guns in the hands of the citizens.
" Later in the week the home secretary is to host a summit on tackling gun crime, which figures due out on Thursday are expected to show has risen sharply......It is expected the figures will show a 20% increase in firearm offences in England and Wales."
Not to go all troll happy on you, but reliability in American cars has increased greatly in recent years. I will agree that Imports are overall still reliable. However, there is still a bad taste in peoples mouths from several of the reliability issues that American manufacturers went through in the early 80's. Since I believe what I stated above, I have a 94 Nissan Altima for my beater because it is reliable and gets decent gas mileage. I have American muscle for when I want to play.
I haven't tried gasoline, but I did figure out that computers are allergic to lead.

I am not an ATI fanboy. In fact, I have an Nvidia card in my box right now. However, let me clarify what I was trying to state before. Not comparing top of the line cards. Comparing cards on a budget on D3, Nvidia still wins by a pretty hefty margin. However, it isn't quite as big of a deal as it is on the high end. I just figured before some one went out and dropped a bunch of cash they might want to remember that there are two big games coming out.

HL2 might be flawed on it. From the sound of things it sounds like Nvidia isn't able to use thier less precise calcs on the HL2 engine for some reason. There will be two engines that are probably going to drive the industry for the next few years and they are the D3 engine and the HL2 engine. I would rather have a card that will play both well then one that excels at one and sucks at the other.
Something to keep in mind when you upgrading. ATI does a good job of keeping up with Nvidia on D3. Nvidia is obviously quicker, but ATI isn't bad. However, on he HL2 benchmarks that have been released, ATI has been smoking Nvidia.
Here is a review of some cards that are actually in my price range and from the sounds of it might be in yours.
Andy,
I don't know what the specs on the Smart Roadster is, but it is impressive if you get 47 mpg in it, but I wouldn't drive it because that czr is ugly.
Yes, signing up for a privately run tournament that happens to have a male and female ladder is such discrimination. I mean the we should merge the NBA and WNBA or the PGA and WPGA. Granted, there is a big difference between a keyboard and mouse and playing basket ball, but still the point stands. There is segregation all over the place. In fact, most of the time there if a female tourny, they can also play in the "open" tournament. It's okay to have the Black Enterntainment Network, but if I started the White Entertainment Network I would be a racist. It's okay to have a female tourny and a open tourny, but if you have a female and a male, people bust a fucking gasket. I'm not against female gamers either. I like them. Gamer chicks are cool. I have several as friends. However, not every thing is a horrible injustice requiring a lawsuit.
The problem is not the treatment of games in common media. This or that is coming out or look at what they are doing in blah blah blah. The problem is that every time a trouble teen does something crazy they blame it on video games like moms in the 70's used to blame it on music like Kiss. It have been a scapegoat and has in fact been looked down upon with disdain in many, many articles. In a ruling to uphold age restrictions on the sale of video games in some state, a judge went out of his way to say that video games are not art and are not capable of conveying anything meaningful. Things are getting better because games are becoming a prevelant part of our society. Either way, this is still a good cause to those that are interested.
They wouldn't have to dos all of the thousands of machines. All they would have to do is DOS what ever is doing the redirecting. Remember when Microsoft.com was taken down a year or two ago? The script kiddiots took down the router that was the only path way to Microsofts DNS servers. You would have to build a really robust network with all kinds of redundancy. While it is possible you could make something that could with stand most DOS's, it would cost an ass load (even with people volunteering mirrors), which is still a big problem.
Actually, last time I checked they made 30% of their money from lisencing the engine. Yes, they are inching more towards being an engine company, but when you sell millions of copies of a game it does take a while to catch up, but soon it just might.
As funny as that sounds, when the xbox-linux project submitted to have a boot loader signed, when mentioned that in the submission email to MS. Not that $100k means jack to them in comparison to their cash holdings though.

A middle click on any tab closes it in firefox. So, there isn't a button on the tab, just click the middle button/scroll wheel.

Just to show I am not talking out of my ass.
Apparently Violent Gun Crime has gone up 20% in the last year

Heu Fox News gets in on the action too, you decide!
In all fairness, I have tried to include several sources and not just gun nut sites in the US. Flame away
Doh, just realized something. That should be, I will agree that Imports are overall more reliable.

they have something like 42 billion in cash reserves. That would have to be one HELL of a legal battle.

I remember a game "device" that hooked up to the ps2 that can get found at Game Girl Advance. Don't know if it is actually a joke though.
