Once again a nice display on how the government trys to win 'brownie points' with Big Business. Not that I really care to stir up the discussion, just the fact that noses are getting pretty brown on capital hill and the RIAA is smiling all the way.
What's even more disgusting about all this is that this Politician probably forgets his password at least once a week, Yet, he's right there in one of the more powerful jobs one can have in our country, trying to push moronic laws and amendments and pointing the finger in directions that he blatantly has no clue of.
When will these assclown's get a fricken clue and instead of trying to find legal loopholes for the RIAA, spend that time and really take a good look at what they're playing against. They might be surprised at what it's all about and who is helping to keep it going.
I hope I'm not alone in feeling that AOL would be a rather poor choice to port onto Linux.
Granted, I see the merits of a push like that, and when I think about it more, it is a good idea marketwise, as well as community building wise. I mean granted, this isn't going to electrify the Linux community and cause a surge of millions to cross over, but it deffinately would give a boost in most cases, especially to those who aren't too comfortable wanting to jump to a nix based system. Having something like AOL available on the platform could be a welcome sign to a lot of wouldbes, despite how many of us cringe at the idea of even concidering running an AOL Client in a prestine linux environment. =)
Good Call. I was too honestly making a shopping list for walmart (Deoderant, Sams Choice, over Stuffed Bean bag, Microtel machine running Linux..).
But I can see where they are just pushing on their website as opposed to in stores. For one, think of how many stores they have throughout the country (US), just putting 10 of these units alone is quite a chunk of change, and if no one bites at the offer, there now stuck with all that inventory on these machines.
But from a website, you keep it at one area, you don't have to stock up on the machines, you can pass the order directly to the manufacture and have them ship it to the customer (In this case Microtel.), this way you keep a lower surplus, and the customer still get's their product.
As if we don't have enough people in the world who already hold conversations with themselves out loud. And How will Cingular and Verison brand this? Capped tooth with they're logo on it? And I don't even want to think where you be loading your SIM card!
But what about us PC Users? GNUTella is of course a good place still, but most of it's clients are either packed with spyware, or just un-user-friendly. There's Direct-Connect (www.neo-modus.com), but due to some of the restrictions a lot of the hubs are placing, not everyone can participate on it in general (some of the hubs require such minmums as 50gb's minimum share [meaning they have to have 50gb+ of files shared or they're not getting in the hub.], others descriminate you based on your connection [some hubs will only allow 10mbit's+ only. tough luck for us Cable and DSL customers.]). And don't go to DC thinking it's another Music fueled p2p, it is more-so a porn and other file type's kind of place to hang out, you will find mp3's and other formats of music, but 1st you need to figure out the GUI as well. So, officially, unless you don't mind sitting down for a couple of hours or days figuring out how to work a piece of software, I don't suggest moving to Neo-Modus's offering.
So what else is there? I've seen WinMX, but the new version has a new type of way to connect, which I have yet to determine if it's my ISP and their unrightful port blockings again, or if a piece of my network isn't setup right.
I guess I am not the only one who read the article and went on a hunt for Jeff Park's work(s). thelightsaber.com appears to have suffered a/., or just by strange coincedences, it is unreachable.
My Experience: As if Charter hasn't screwed with us, it's customers, enough. They already Block common ports (21, 23, 80, etc..), which they don't mention to you till you bluntly ask one of the support tech's that actually had 1/2 a brain. Then there was a little 'mishap' where all the packages they offer got revised and not a lot of people were notified that their 512/128 packaged was switched to a 384/64, and again, you had to call them to find this little bit of information out.
My Feeling: Screw Charter, screw them and thier demented idea of customer service.
Now granted, I have yet to see anything press wise that points out that charter is also thinking of embracing this idea, but then again, I haven't seen anything else from them on paper, that is, except my monthly bill which heaven forbid, I better not be late on.
I appologise for my venting and frustration, but I got onto the wagon of 'broadband', specifically cable, cause I wanted the speed, I wanted the freedom of a 24/7 connection, hell, I wanted to play Quake2 with a 25 ping! And it is unfortunate now that I have to use Charter as my service provider. In all seriousness, what business is it really to them what I am downloading? People can say 'it's totally their business, your using their pipes...', and that's valid enough, but I am paying for use of their pipes. I am paying to be able to download what I want, and any size I care to do, and most of all, I'm paying for a service they offered me and others, and I said 'Ok, here's what you asked for.' (money) and now I get excuses as to why I am unable to do 1/2 the features I was advertised. Which pathetically, they will have excuses for those excuses as well. Makes me wonder if charter hired their Tech support personal from AOL.
Anyways, appologise from the vent, but I am sure I am not the only one out there that has had, or is having difficulties with Charter or another cable service provider.
I wonder how many Members of the Chinese government now have dreams of a Retractable Dome of their own. The Onion may have unwittingly kicked of a international contest between our governments.
Hey, colleges and universities have to encorporate something that is A) Related to the Present and B) Something easy that even a 1/2 wit can Ace.
And Weblogs, aka 'Blog's, are just that and then some. I must say I like to occasionally sift through someone's online journal or 'Blog', but 1/2 the time I find myself wondering 'Why is this person complaining?' and 'Where did this person get the idea that people would want to read this stuff?' (that would make me guilty I guess.) and last, but certainly not least, 'Where in the [heck] did this person learn english?'
But to defend that last curiousity, we can blame the net, (or even D-Dials if you really want to push it), for the lack of educational value when it comes to the written word, namely english. Even I can not concider myself an english major, nor will I even attempt such a bogus statement, but geez, compared to some sites, I could fall into thinking that I'm an English Language God of sorts. =)
But the end result, it just smells like college teachers are just looking for things to make them 'Hip' and 'in the know' of the present, and it will last a few years till the fad dies down, then it will be tossed into your Local Junior College's Adult education class catalog, right under 'Potery'.
(Disclaimer - Potery is not Bad, Pot maybe, But Potery is not, unless of course your a complete and under freak, then maybe even breathing would be a class with too much of a curve for you. Anyways...)
What I find curious is that the article makes movie88.com and film88.com appear to be 2 completely different animals that host the same content, yet I thought that the owners of movie88.com moved to film88.com (as well as to a different country.)
But the industry shot itself in the foot long ago and now that the shock is over, they are going to realize where they went wrong. As for going the way of the Book Publishing/Distro/Sales way, I doubt it. Unlike most publishers, Entertainment companies have a lot more room for imagination, and a lot more of a consumer base. Cetainily another advantage is that most people have to have book forced into their pocession, but almost everyone buys music, well unless your the RIAA, but that is a beast of another arguement, for another time.
Another thing guys is like TV, Radio waves also bounce off into Space, granted were talking AM/FM here, but their signals go anyway it can, up, down, left, right, and everyway inbetween. I feel reduntant adding this, but I didn't see it mentioned yet and hopefully will get the story striaght that radio is deffinately NLOS.
That Most People are lazy! Sure, I will agree that the UI stunk, most programs out there have poor interfaces, but you can't just say 'Oh it's pure crud...' without concidering that most of the people that use programs, especially programs geared at music swaping, are lazy and are too intent on getting onto the service quickly, as opposed to taking their time and going through the entire program making sure it's set to their liking before jumping onto the service.
I doubt there's a perfect GUI out there, but it would be nice if more designers and developers took a bit more time taking a stab at one instead of just being content with it looking pretty.
If I had any Mod points to give, you'd have gotten 2 just cause you brought a Tear to my eye. I miss Seth Green Games, I miss waiting till Midnight just so I could log back on the the different boards and spend my turns in LORD for that day. Door Abuse, you betcha.
I did manage to dig up and setup an old copy of WildCat! BBS Software, And seeing as I was a WWIV Software SysOp, that was something a bit new to me. But alas, only a couple of the people I still hang with from back in that day were interested, guess no one else gets the concept?
So are there any public BBS's left? That is aside from the few companys that still manage one. (e.g for Drivers, Configs, Etc.) and were or are there any BBS Distros that could be run on Linux?
And lastly, for SysOp Privledges, Please Press Alt+H Now. Have a Nice Day.
But according to the Gracenote newsletter I just recieved, Eminem's CD is now #1 on the chart as opposed to #2. And Celine Dion's CD is #7. Great Copy Protection going on here, I wonder if the RIAA hired the same kids they had scouring the internet to find MP3's write this protection mechanism.
Uhh, this guy got a score of 2: informative for copying what the website says in verbatim?! Bad Moderators, See for yourselves, 2nd paragraph on the page. (Hint: "While this interview primarily focuses on...")
Sounds like someone's bent over the fact ventura has yet to pass a law that limits the weather in MN to never fall below -12, dontcha know?
Now granted, I live in sunny, liberal albiet, So. California, a far cry from the Iceberg known as Minniesota, but I still watch news and I tend to pay attention some of the time too. I think the state of MN lucked out with getting someone like Ventura. Granted, his years in the wrestling biz helped propel him into the governers chair, but what we've seen out here is someone who gives a crap about their state. Sure, he's probably goof'd and pulled some moves that not everyone is going to agree with, but name a politician that has done everything they promised, and never flubbed up anything during their term.
Anyways, that's an:end to the rant. I say hats off to Minniesota for this, hope other states, like California, follow the lead for once and do something right instead of listening to the Money (RIAA and the sorts).
In most cases, especially when dealing with computers and end users average computer ability, how do you write a FAQ that can't be claimed as being copied verbatim and/or vice versa? I mean, there are so few ways to a frequently asked question. Such as:
Q: I recieve a Non System Disk error everytime I boot my machine? A: Remove Floppy from Drive A: and press any key to continue.
disclaimer: I know there are other causes of this error, this is the most common and is only given to serve as an example. Therefore, don't go on a tagent trying to elaborate. =)
So with that given, how can you write that differently than the 1,000's of other sites who carry the same question in their respective FAQ's?
Which leaves me with the notion that a lot of today's companies are run by would-be, or even failed, Lawyers. I mean, look at all the time they like spending in courtrooms bickering over lawsuits.
Was it just strange coincidence that I have caught this thread at 7 of 9 comments? I think not. =)
And what about the the ability to handle 100,000 clients, is that really going to be enough? I mean, there are a lot of admitted trekkies in the world, but there are several more out there in the 'closet' which would see something this as a welcomed invite to attend a trekkie convention whereas they wouldn't have in RealLife(tm).
"According to the article the company hopes to collect royalties from other companies using pop-under ads."
Yea, and I'm going to recieve donations into my paypal account.
But, I see this as a good thing, now that someone has wasted their time in trying to secure themselves some revenue, this will either go one of 2 ways:
1) Exit Exchange will go belly up due to lack of royalties being honored, and toss in the lawsuits they'll probably insue on certain companies for failing to honor said royalties.
-or-
2) Sites making use of pop-unders will cease such activities to avoid paying royalties for something they should see as, dare I say, retarded.
Either way, I see less pop-unders hiding in my future. Anyone agree?
You'll be blown away. Just from playing on battle.net, you can already tell this a very in-depth game, gameplay wise and player wise. In some cases, it will not give you a mental break, period. You always have something to be mindful of in multiplayer, and not just your opponents / teammates. This is what happens when you roll of Blizzards popular titles, and the features most admired by fans, into one game.
So I agree with Disoriented on this, I am also drooling profusely for the full release to play this game in full. Btw, If there are those of you waiting as well, Blizzard recently updated it's projected system req's, and you can find them here (may have to scroll down the page a bit). Enjoy!
A man in the porno biz get's the shaft and decides its because of 'Uber Hackers' employed by the higher powers in vegas to take business from him. Sounds way too Hollywood'ish to me, which I fully believe if they somehow win some sort of settlement in this, there will be at least some sort of T.V. Mini-Series that glams up this already semingly Fictional account of innocient victims in the Porn Industry.
And if this story is even true, then why are these guys in court/hearings? It's only going to get them a cash settlement at best. But to me, despite the fact the basis of this whole ordeal is money apparently, I wonder why, or if they tried, to hire own their own 'Uber Hackers' to help 'counter' the others. Granted that would just make this whole thing sound way more bizarre than it already does. But these people deal in Sleeze, and I wouldn't think Sleeze would run to the authorities right off the bat, I'd think they'd feel more comfortable about my wonderings (of countering as opposed to having hearings.). Then again, who knows, they could have tried it and failed so their next option was to call on the P.U.C. to help lynch Sprint of Nevada.
But I'll admit, I'm going to attempt to keep an eye on this story, curiousity, and I've got 8 lives to spare.
