  1. MSN Messenger and Pocket PCs? on No More PalmOS Instant Messaging? · · Score: 0, Insightful

Does anyone else see this as a conspiracy on the part of Microsoft to get IM killed on Palm while building it up on Pocket PCs? I wonder how much money is being passed under the table to get Yahoo and AOL to cancel support for Palm.

  2. The gold rush is over on JRR Tolkien: Return Of The Domain Name · · Score: 5, Interesting

Imagine if homesteaders had their land taken away back in the 1800's by corporations who claimed that they actually had rights to the land, even though the corps never set foot on the land and had no interest in it until they saw how profitable the land was.

  3. I use the telephone and ftp on Yahoo and Unilateral Anti-Spam Technology? · · Score: 5, Informative

These days I can't even open by inbox, it is so overflowing with spam. I'm exaggerating, but at some point email is going to become completely useless because of spam. I do a lot of business over telephone (the way I used to do it before email) and have an ftp site to which customers can copy shared files.

It's slower, but not as slow as deleted emails that I never see and can't respond to.

Hopefully you majored in something useful like management or accounting so that you don't have to worry about finding a job when you get out. Keep computers and programming as your hobby and let your other work pay the bills.

If you still have some money, think about pursuing a professional degree (JD, MBA, etc.). Demand for these never dips.

There are no jobs in IT out here for you.

  7. My Bayesian filter is slowing becoming a whitelist on Filter-foiling Gibberish Becoming A Spam Staple · · Score: 4, Interesting

There is so much crap flooding my inbox these days that the spam filter is slowly becoming a whitelist of my coworkers and a few external customers. Hardly anything else that comes in is worth the time to look at.

I know that whitelists aren't the answer, but then nothing short of immediate execution of spammers is.

How interesting it would be for all versions of Linux before this code is removed to be in violation of SCO's copyright.

Well, if we count backwards the generations from now until the creation of Adam, I think we can safely set the 0:00:00 date to about 6,000 years ago (left as an excercise for the reader).

We had a guy on our team who was always complaining about how getting t-shirts and keychains and hats and other booty was distracting us from the real goal of our project. He would always say stuff like, "Why would they give us this t-shirt when we can draw on a white one and it would be the same?"

We had to fire that motherfucker. A person with bad morale can infect others. So if you have to complain every time someone you have no relationship with gets something nice, keep it to yourself.

Though I've never played with them because I'm a grown up now, I've never hesitated in recommending them as fun and educational toys for friends' kids.

What really impresses me more than just the base set is the amount of hacking towards making the programming of these little toys simpler with stuff like Mindstorms VB and Python.

It's sad to see this stuff just pass away. How cool would it be to have a way to pitch in and get Lego to keep the Mindstorm factories open.
