    that's actually a great idea... If some software could analyze your current jukebox and boil it down to say, types of sounds you like, arrangments you like, melodies, keys, and tempos...you could have music delievered to you that you stand a better chance of liking. Maybe throw in some sort of intelligent randomizer so you could branch out occasionally and not end up with a HD full of knock-off bands) Now, if this thing could understand that I like Merzbow AND Air, I would be ultra impressed! ;)

    From the way progressions resolve to the overused arrangement of "Intro Verse Chorus Bridge Verse Chorus Bridge Verse Breakdown Verse Chorus Outro", most popular music has the same basic structure. Why is it that 95% of rock songs have the same 4 chord major progression? IT WORKS! Yes, there are exceptions where real song writing ability carries the song on to success (Queen, anyone?) but the general templates are there...and record companies KNOW (and bank) on it. (considering that most pop buyers can only hear the singing, I'll understand if no one gets this)

When I was working over at LANSCE (TA53) I walked into the beamline area and saw tiny figures down the "tunnel" that were over a mile away on both sides of me and had to stop for a second.... I realized I was IN Half-Life! It was the weirdest feeling.... BTW, This is the real "Black Mesa"

    (see "BAD" music or "muzak", videographers know what I'm talking about...)

    If you're currently in a band, stop shopping for labels (if you already haven't)
    and put out an enormous ammount of instrumental ballads and up-beat pop shit.

    Charge $10 a song for unlimited/unrestricted use of these throw-away/forgetable "songs to shop to".

    When you're hosting someone elses hardware and they make a change to their means of access (New IP) you do not confiscate their hardware!

    What reason would cause them to do this?!

    Maybe there's a law that complicates this...

    What if a new wireless local loop technology was deployed by Qwest (or whoever) that just happened to interfere with Wi-Fi? What if XM radio takes off and becomes the norm? According to the FCC the 2.4Ghz band is fair game.

    We really need to work on ways to transmit data over
    a constantly changing sea of background noise.

    Adaptibility and fault tolerence are needed.
    I'm picturing something like the ever-slinky P2P networks.
    Kill a node and the network lives on.

    Intelligent re-routing of data around "trouble spots" on many different carrier types.
    A pipe dream for now, but with things like UltraWideBand
    in the works it may not be for too much longer!

    No really, as long as people want to communicate with each other they will have nearly unlimited business.

    Also, as long as they have right of way, there can be no REAL competition.

    I have a feeling that another monopoly breakup is the only thing that could help at this point....
    As for now, I'll just sit back, keeping paying my $170+ monthly qwest bill, and wait for dog to eat dog...then maybe Master (DOJ) will punish....it's inevitable. (sorry, link is PPT)

    I wonder how many parents will complain about these games...

    Something tells me parents will not "Boo!" when these games start coming free
    in cereal boxes and their kids start collecting military trading cards and wearing camo to school...

    There's a big difference between marketers/sales people and inventors.

    Look at Edison...The man went on a propaganda campaign to make
    Tesla's AC look EXTREMELY DANGEROUS
    by publicly displaying an elephant being electrocuted with AC!
    This is how he decided to win peoples' hearts (and wallets)...
    with one of the worlds biggest FUD tactics!
    (Thankfully, he lost that war.)

    Don't get me wrong, I appreciate ALL inventors and "visionaries"
    but the better technology should win, not the biggest marketing campaign.

    No, Nicola Tesla did.

    Also...along the Bell lines...

    Bell Labs invented the "cellular concept"...many stations sharing common channels...

    Satellite communications were another first.
    (And yes, Arthur C. Clarke invented the idea of
    geosynchronous orbits which the first Bell Labs Comm Satellite used.
    This orbit is also known as the "Clarke Orbit")

    Just think where we would be without Lucent (well, Bell Labs in particular)....

    They have invented, among MANY other things...
    "the transistor, the laser and wireless technologies."

    90% of the tech you love and can't live without originated at Bell Labs.
    You know...computers...unix...voice communication...redundant/fault tolerant data networks...etc...

    Oh, and for the patent lovers in tha house...

    "Bell Labs averaged one patent per business day from 1925 to 1995,
    and since March 1996, patents assigned to Lucent have been issued at a rate of more than three per business day."

    (Disclaimer - I do realize this is off topic a little, but I want people to think about how much great tech comes out of there!)

    Do you guys realize the ammount of Microsoft software that is out there in our collective infrastructure running fairly important jobs and storing sensitive info that COULD be comprimised if too much was made public?

    Remember the SNMP vulnerabilities mentioned here a couple months back?

    Well, they were kept quiet until most manufacturers of network gear had fixes ready for deployment.
    Why? Why didn't they tell us about this sooner?

    Because somebody, somewhere would have exploited it for some sort of gain. (political, financial, or personal 1337-ness)

    Some things are better kept quiet.
    That is what national security is about.

    Oh yeah, MS is lame...there...now i fit in...

    I had to forcibly drag my friend away from the display....

    But of coarse it's best buy, so the ad went something like this...

    Extra controler - $25
    Mem Card - $20
    DVD Remote $20
    Replacement service plan - $20 (bastards)

    The system was free but they made it sound like you were getting a deal by buying all of the accessories too....all accessories....including the worthless replacement plan.

    (anyone who had the very first release of Playstation will know about the "other" product replacement plan....)
