He like starts foaming the mouth when he talks about GNU being a recursive acronym. if i ever met the guy i'd be hesitant to mention the HURD project in fears he might pee on the floor over excitement.
Plus he's a zealot. Zealots don't help the appearance of the overall movement because they cannot see anything else besides their own narrow view. He pretty much things anyone who does't use linux ("ITS GNU/LINUX!", Stahlman foams) is a retard. Not arguing, but why should anyone try to listen to anyone who is so arrogant and fervently devoted to doing things the hard way.
.Mac won't ever be free. But the problem is, that all that.mac goodness is embedded in a bunch of apps, and you can't really use those features unless you have.mac. So I wonder how feesable it would be to "capture" all the.mac requests your computer might send out and redirect them somewhere. For example, I already have my own dedicated box with tons of hard drive space. So why use Apple's system when i already pay? When i click "Homepage" in iPhoto why not capture those requests and SFTP it to somewhere. All those settings could be set in that app that captures the requests. Just an idea.
i didn't dump the mac for pc hardware because of the iPod, but the attractive little doodad certainly didn't take away from the decision. i switched from my linux PC (amd Athlon XP2000+) to a dual G5. I love the eye candy and ease of use of the GUI, but the power of what lies under the hood. Honestly i'm am very pleased and i can't say i'm going back any time soon.
os/car similies*: Windows - Honda Civic, no torque, but somewhat stylish, everyone has one, moderately priced Linux - 80's 5.0 Mustang, so much power, iffy on looks (sometimes someone does one up nice), cult following, find one for almost nothing OS X - Aston Martin Vanquish, sexy, powerful, small cult following, priced out of this world!
at Cal Poly Pomona, we used to use the campus switch board number as the phone number for a card that one of us started. that way whoever you were, you'd just use that to get the discount (because sometimes it was nutty the discouts you get...$14, with your Ralph's card, only $7.99!).
I can see the guy compiling the stats: "Wow, this guy drinks a lot"
except, most windows games these days are writen with DirectX not OpenGL. Blizzard uses OpenGL and they do some great stuff with parallel development. Which is why we see mac and win binaries of WoW, WC3, SC and Diablo 2 (heck they even made OS X native installers for Diablo2! what nice people).
More acceptance of OpenGL would most definately help. It would be nice to see a lot more games for the Mac, but i've got the ones i need:D
My problem is that mine works fine with old games but not with new ones. Like SW: Battlegrounds, the Fourth disc in the SW trilogy won't work, but Halo, Mechassult, all work fine! So do i need to get my damn xbox "fixed" (they replace the drive) for $80 because of an issue that isn't actually related to the drive, but more so the disc compatability? sounds like a crock of shit to me.
a 1:1 undergrad to computer ratio. every incoming freshman is assigned a laptop computer (dell d600) and when they graduate, they buy it for $1. In addition we have tons of wired classrooms and wireless areas on campus. Not bad for a small liberal arts university!
who has to carry a letter around when he flies because of this. While i understand that we are in danger from terrorists, it's unfortunate that our own citizens cannot travel about their country without "papers".
Yeah its called their OEM agreement...and much like MS with most companies, Intel pulls the same crap. "Oh you want these reference designs? Oh well you're going to have to stop selling AMDs"
I have a flat panel and i can't get anything to run full screen in anything but the native res. its really annoying because diablo 2 only runs in 800x600 max, so i have to run it windowed. and when i run it windowed, if i mouse outside of the window, it disappears, never to be found again. then i have to kill it.
on my laptop, native res of 1024x768, it will switch to the lower res fullscreen just fine. i've been trying to find a way to make xf86 behave and go below my Sceptre x9s-naga's native res of 1280x1024:(
maybe winex 4 will fix this, just have to wait till the site quits being/.ed
well you know, old ladies are a threat to national security. i cannot count how many times i've seen old ladies getting the random search flag at the airport. obviously they are some sort of threat. (visualize me rolling my eyes)
I got a speeding ticket, less than a week later i had letters from 3 lawyers offering to "take care of it" for me. I had already had one take care of it, but it's interesting what is available to them.
now if redhat could just get Broadcomm to release their drivers, or hell, write some of their own...i would ponder buying this. Our university uses the Dell D600 and that is the only thing keeping my linux down!
Sometimes i wish smaller schools had some pull so we could get projects like these...or even quarter, nay, a n eigth the size! problem is we don't have the immense research backgrounds and it holds us back.
both DirecTV and Time Warner Digital Cable. i have the sony sat-t60 directivo and my father has the new scientific atlanta explorer 8000 (6000?). while i still love my tivo over that laggy pos pvr, its nice to see cable coming around. i know that scientific atlanta trys to not work with tivo, as some other cable boxes can interface directly with the stand alone tivos. check out tivocommunity.com for more detailed info.
in recent news/. recently announced in a press conference that they were "...going to stray from being actual news site, to reporting more hearsay and posting lame JonKatz articles"
"we realize Jon makes stuff up but we really can't help ourselves, he's so damn cute" said Hemos, known for his prolific misspelling. "in actuality, we've been doing this for years. We [slashdot.org] don't actually report anything, we just link users to stuff that already exists."
Rob Malda commented with, "yeah, i mean i was the genious that figured out we could get lots of hit by posting redundant news stories in one place. and heck we got some washed up hotwired writer to make stuff up too."
"But seriously, we are really the ones behind the hot grits/petrified natalie portman thing" said timothy, one of the slashdot moderators. "it was funny watching all the copycats spring up. i actually saw her [ms. portman] once, in person. it was great."
slashdot.org was bought by VALinux and many of the owners found themselves swimming in piles of money. Rob "Roblimo" Miller was reported to have bought a limousine with gold flecked rainbow paint, wall-to-wall shagg carpet interror, and gold plated badges. Rob Malda has offically changed his name to the symbol ß and is now known as 'the guy formally known as CmdrTaco'. Hemos has actually found he can multiply and has begun to take over the world with his misspelling hellspawn.
Same here, i use my 360 as my DVD Player and it works great. why have multiple dvd players? :P

Now I wonder if they sell those on the Apple website ...
at an academic discount to boot!

Richard Clarke's book is a really good read. Good insight to what has been done right (or at least better) and what is currently going wrong.
how much of your personal life does Penny-Arcade consume? On that note, great job, I love your strip.

Grandma: "lets see...when I was using Windows, Junior told me to hit Ca-tarl, Alt and Del. Whats going on!? Why is my computer shutting down!"
might have to remove that CTRL+ALT+DEL sends shutdown off

then they will probably get thrown in with some of these violent felons and be 'changed' into different people.
