  1. Windows ME again? on PC Makers Offering a Bridge Back To XP · · Score: 4, Insightful

I've heard some people say: "Everyone said the same thing when XP came out." That's bullshit. When XP was released, everyone here on Slashdot was saying: "Wow, this is actually pretty good; I haven't had a single crash; They finally delivered on their promise to release a consumer OS with the NT core."

Maybe in a few months Vista will be a good upgrade, who knows, but right now I can't see one feature that I want.

The question is **why the hell is this guy being considered resisting arrest inthe first place**. What justification was the original arrest under? There was no "original arrest." They tried to remove the guy from the room because he was being disruptive. It's only after he became physically combative that they arrested him. Over 50% of the highly moderated comments in this thread seem to support the view that it's ok for one jackass to arbitrarily dominate the discussion at this type of an event. Should some crazy guy just get to yell crazy shit the whole time to the exclusion of people who have legitimate questions and are willing to follow the rules? Also, these same people seem to advocate that the police should be kind and gentle to people who are actively resisting them. Someone earlier made the point of how quick and easy it is to gouge out an eye; if someone resists after you clearly say "Stop resisting or I will tase you", I say tase away.
  5. Re:Creationism equals intelligent design? on Creationists Silence Critics with DMCA · · Score: 1

This is probably the strongest argument against intelligent design to atheists/agnostics. What I was getting at is that, without the religion/god angle, ID arguers would have to come up with a compelling answer to this. Either they would, or the discussion would be over and we could go back to talking about SCO or DRM or whatever.

ID may be a flawed idea that should be discarded, but it does raise interesting questions. All the work that's gone into refuting arguments about eyes and flagellum and irreducible complexity has surely given us some new insights.

It's too bad this has become such a polarizing, religion based issue. Were that not the case, rational arguments about "Intelligent Design" vs. purely stochastic formation/evolution of life would be a lot more interesting. At least, the (non-theistic) intelligent design view presents some hard questions to answer: How does a phenotype that in intermediate forms is useless survive to its fruition? How did the incredibly unlikely perfect combinations of amino acids come together at the right time?

Instead we're all yelling about how stupid religious people are (I'm not sure we're wrong, just saying it would be nice if that could be removed from the equation.)

If WoW implemented something like that I would probably re-subscribe. The game itself was still fun, but there were always some people around that would ruin the vibe.

I remember playing Gemstone III back in the day; It was very rare to see anything out of character and it really contributed to the immersion. They probably had about 0.00001% the number of players that WoW has so it was easier for the GMs to reign in disruptive players, but some system that is player moderated should be workable on any scale.

WRT to article: I couldn't agree more. It's pretty much a necessity to be on Vent/TS to do any raiding, and usually the most prolific speakers are the most annoying ... that and other people would always be put off when I'd launch into a rambling drunken rant about gnomes or something.

  10. Re:To hell with MOTU & Sonar on Linux as A Musician's OS? · · Score: 1

It wasn't too long ago that there were no (few?) linux drivers for pro-audio hardware. Now that there are drivers for the RME interfaces things have really improved in that respect. With the continuing development of Recording/DAW type programs, it seems there's only one thing missing: real professional quality plug-ins (both processing and instruments.)

I'm not sure what the solution is; Without support for Core Audio, VST, etc. formats none of the existing stuff will work (not to mention all that USB dongle crap) and since these things a require a lot of specialized knowledge and equipment to develop, it seems unlikely that we'll see free (beer) replacements. I'm thinking of things like Ivory and BFD and Bomb Factory processors.

That said, the ability to run a distro optimized for audio is a huge advantage over other platforms. I really look forward to seeing what further progress can be made.

Why does everyone here overlook the fact that a default install of a modern distro can't play mp3s, flash, and basically all video formats (like someone said earlier: it doesn't matter whose fault this is.) I've used Linux for years and I still don't bother trying to get any of this working, never mind getting it to work smoothly with stuff embedded in web pages. I know most of it is theoretically possible, but once you're hacking autoconf files and manually setting LD_LIBRARY paths it's beyond what many people want to deal with.

  18. Not as cheap as it seems ... on Cheap Audio Production · · Score: 2, Interesting

Even with the slickest low cost hard disk recording system, there are still several other important items involved in making a good sounding recording.

1.) Microphones: It's very easy to spend $30K on mics for drums alone. Using cheap mics makes things sound like ... well like you used cheap mics.

2.) Recording Space: Without an Acoustically good space in which to record, it's easy to end up with a real thin "inside a tin can" sound.

3.) Engineer/Producer: Even in a high-end pro studio, results will be poor without some talented people running things (both technically and aesthetically.) Pro tools systems work especially well for electronica/hip-hop/modern r&b where real recording of real instruments are rare, but to get a really professional sound out of a live band, there are very few alternatives to spending some serious (sure less serious than even 10-15 years ago) money.

Bullshit. Either this is an incredibly poorly written article, or someone is getting rich off P.R people's stupidity. They don't even say whether the analysis is based on the notes (melody and chords) or on an audio sample of the song. I'd like to see them extract the harmony and melody of an audio recording, or determine "fullness" or "brilliance of sound" from music notation.
Most people can't explain why they like a certain song beyond saying they like blues, or a good beat and a strong melody.
Once again: Bullshit. I've never heard anyone say "You know why I like $band, because damnit I like a good beat and strong melody!"
