Because open source only works when reported bugs get fixed. If you already have a long list of bugs unfixed any new ones reported are a just a added security risk.
How about shnidlers list. That is another famous DVD missing also how about magnum PI? Why do the best movies take so long? Probally because they are still making money from other sources and don't want to kill the golden goose.
It's a very smart move publishing it on the web. Nobody is going to be able to read 1200 pages online a lot of people will start reading it and get hooked and go out and buy it. People that need refrences can just get it on the web.
What I want to know is how many people infected their computers on purpose and how man just didin't remove the virus after they found it? Most prople won't do a criminal act will but ignoring somebody elses?
In other news today microsoft reports that it windows is cheaper than Linux http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/01/28/073253 &mode=nested&tid=109&tid=126&tid=163&tid=187&tid=9 8&tid=99
The question is were any of thoose test computers attached to the internet?
Good thing chaucer never sold on ebay, he would of lost his shirt http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/01/28/133621 3&mode=nested&tid=133&tid=186&tid=98&tid=9 9
Whats amazing to me is how well the computer system handled. It seems that eventhough half the shuttle was missing the crew still didn't even realize that anything was wrong untill there was no possible input that could stabalize the ship.
There is inteligent life saving the next generation of media. What is the most used record of early human history? The bible. It was preserved because so many human beings had copies. While countless records were being destroyed by the fire of the great library of alexandria the ones that were saved where the popular plays that were widely distributed. We won't have to worry about losing star trek one day because so many trekkies have almost every copy of every episode. Large portions of old time radio exsist to day because people broke the rules and copied them off the air and donated them after the originals were lost.
Two points, First of all the reason people hated IBM back then was because of closed source and closed hardware. IBM created the open hardware market with the PC which explains its success and is now leading the open source movment providing more then enough restitution for past evils. Second Along came microsoft and made any other company look like a saint.

Great rescue robot. I can see it now stop hugging me so tight your hurting me......
When ever you see a story like this you can always instantly see that they are missing the forest for the sake of the tree's. Two points, there is super bowl sunday where a large percentage of people (beleive it or not) watch more for the commercials then the game. Also when a advertiser plays a commercial now they have to show it to millions of people hoping that a small percentage of them are in the right demographic for their product (ex: mustang cars for mocho adults) and then hope that a small percentage of those actually buy something. Tivo has demographic naturally built in. You can show the right advertisement to the right people and be more confident that they will actually watch it. 150 years ago a tailor mob burned sewing machines because they thought that it would cause the extinction of the garment trade . So much time and somethings never change.
Don't get to excited. Bombardier built the half of the new york city's new subway cars along with a japanese company. You can always tell which ones are Bombardier because they are always broken. According to the Transit Authority the Bombardier's are lasting a avarage of three years while the japanese versions are holding up like expected. It looks cool but I would need a lot more trust to rely on one wheel.
You are never going to see a flying car in your lifetime and the proof is on the edge of any highway. Cars take passive maintenance, you wait untill they break and then you fix them. Anything that flys takes active maintenance (ex: Airplane Time Between Overhalls). No matter how many parachutes you put on it some are always going to land on a building and then you are going to have to justify a tradgedy based on the fact that sombody tried to save money. Sorry the only hope is antigravity.
"I got 9.3M in 0.11 secs at Google, did someone add 1.2M links this morning?;)"
Googles search return is based on geography. Depending on where you live different data centers return different results. Over time the results are suppose to even out but on searches that are constantly changing it is hard to sync that amount of data.
Linux is a awsome server already but it needs a lot more than just Pre-installation and Support by the mainstream computers' builders. With out even mentioning application support how about somthing simple like opening the cd drive, on windows you press the button on the drive on linux (Redhat 9) some times its the cd button sometimes it's the eject command and somtimes nothing works. I use Linux when every possible and I can recount hundreds of little things that would take a new user all day of research on the internet. Linux is improving but plenty of work is needed
I'm sorry I disagree. I use to use mandrake but I switched to red hat after I read on the mandrake website that they don't care how the OS looks because users want to customize their own desktops anyway. When I look at OSX it literally takes my breath away. Even XP in decent in a Telatubby sort of way. The two things really holding Linux back are looks (yes they do matter) and configuration tools, adding windows shares to red hat still basically needs script editing forget about Sendmail.
Of course it can be argued most of what america calls it's standard of living came from the space program. computers, transisters etc... (don't tell me that they would have been invented any way cause I said "It could be argued"

A major company showing tendencies of schizophrenia. What else is new. The point is that the results or their actions has been positve.

The is a two word argument that refutes all of your points soundly. South Korea.

"It seems that my post is seen by Microsoft Security as being a security violation"
LOL
This is a microsoft's version of a security flaw but leaving ports open isn't (and all of the other long list of items)? Go figure.

Microsoft violated the DMCA. Microsoft violated the DMCA. I'm gonna tell.
+1 funny where the heck are mod pints when you need them.

Linux - 115,000,000
but that includes all of kinds of windows
