    New news, same story:

    - Icaza insults Microsoft policies.
    - Nerds rally behind Icaza, he's just so smart to stand up to Microsoft and point out things we already knew.
    - Other, more cynical nerds point out flaws in what Icaza said, possibly contradictions to previous comments or connections with MS.
    - Mods find this comment flamebait, mod it down.
    - No one cares.

  2. Re:Don't count on it on They Killed Ken! · · Score: 2, Insightful

While you raise an interesting point, seems kind of like the wrong analysis IMHO. If this was indeed a ploy to raise ratings, its a horrible one. Consider, you KNOW that Ken won't lose for another thirty four games, and then after that he's done. What incentive to you have to watch, knowing that he'll win every night? If anything, this would hurt their ratings. (At least until this 75th game, where he will or will not be defeated, and then we find out if this was true or just a rumor.)

  3. Porn Jokes Aside on Sony Develops TVs That Zoom in for True Close-ups · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is kind of a cool feature, for various reasons. I think some of the most obvious uses that come to mind (besides naughty zoom-ins,) include sports events (hey, that WAS on the line,) and anything where you might be trying to get a particular detail out of a scene. (Such as, in "The Fellowship of the Ring," there's a truck driving around in background during one scene.)

And before it gets said, I know that has been removed. Its just an example.

And if you did want to use it for something like that, like you said, you'd be much better off with a device that has video as well. Something designed for that purpose.

  6. This makes me sick on The Changing Face Of Campus Tech · · Score: 1

Although the Duke iPod thing has been covered by /. before, (and I have no intention of karma whoring the link, do a search if you're interested you lazy fucks,) this shit still makes me sick. Ok, yippie fuckin' skippie. You get a free iPod as a incoming freshman. Anyone who makes any choice for college based on that is an idiot.

I can understand wireless acess points and good tech all around, in the sense of networks. Those kind of things may actually have some tangible impact on your enjoyment of college. Although, for me, its purely icing. Nice, but hardly required.

Rhapsody and the like free to students make actually be a great idea, because it helps curb pirating. Or at least, I'm willing to bet that's the goal to some degree in giving that to students. However, this is another item on the list of things that have no relevance in picking a school. What so ever.

You underestimate the power of the star wars fan boy. My friend would probably trample on old lady in a wal-mart to get his hands on one of these. Not because its good, but because its in any way, shape, or form related to Stars Wars in all his "glory."

I don't disagree. But I believe its mostly meaningless either way. Microsoft has already received quite a bit of bad PR with its anti-trust problems. Something tells me this hasn't caused the masses to run out and pick up a copy of Fedora Core.

I don't think they'll be losing much ground with standard Joe Consumer any day soon. Even if people do hear about how MS is or isn't bad, it doesn't effect their choice. People are brought up on MS, and companies like Dell and Gateway forcefeed it to their customers.

(I am aware this is only one portion of the market, I am not talking about corporate use.)
