While you raise an interesting point, seems kind of like the wrong analysis IMHO. If this was indeed a ploy to raise ratings, its a horrible one. Consider, you KNOW that Ken won't lose for another thirty four games, and then after that he's done. What incentive to you have to watch, knowing that he'll win every night? If anything, this would hurt their ratings. (At least until this 75th game, where he will or will not be defeated, and then we find out if this was true or just a rumor.)
This is kind of a cool feature, for various reasons. I think some of the most obvious uses that come to mind (besides naughty zoom-ins,) include sports events (hey, that WAS on the line,) and anything where you might be trying to get a particular detail out of a scene. (Such as, in "The Fellowship of the Ring," there's a truck driving around in background during one scene.)
And before it gets said, I know that has been removed. Its just an example.
I have an iPod too. And I do attend college. And I do not use it for anything school related. Nor do I have any intention of it. Its not a tool. Its a toy. And if you did want to use it for something like that, like you said, you'd be much better off with a device that has video as well. Something designed for that purpose.
Although the Duke iPod thing has been covered by/. before, (and I have no intention of karma whoring the link, do a search if you're interested you lazy fucks,) this shit still makes me sick. Ok, yippie fuckin' skippie. You get a free iPod as a incoming freshman. Anyone who makes any choice for college based on that is an idiot.
I can understand wireless acess points and good tech all around, in the sense of networks. Those kind of things may actually have some tangible impact on your enjoyment of college. Although, for me, its purely icing. Nice, but hardly required.
Rhapsody and the like free to students make actually be a great idea, because it helps curb pirating. Or at least, I'm willing to bet that's the goal to some degree in giving that to students. However, this is another item on the list of things that have no relevance in picking a school. What so ever.
I wonder if anyone will buy these, other than people buying them as joke gifts and those unhappy souls who think they'll be collectors' items someday.
You underestimate the power of the star wars fan boy. My friend would probably trample on old lady in a wal-mart to get his hands on one of these. Not because its good, but because its in any way, shape, or form related to Stars Wars in all his "glory."
Every single byte of it is backup of my entire cd collection. I didn't download any of it. I just like being able to carry my collection around with me.
And to another question later down the ladder, its all 192kbps mp3. So its lossy, and its still good quality.
I can't speak for the majority, but of the 20GB on my iPod, 16GB are filled with music. And I'm sure I'll finish filling it by the end of the year. I go through music like crazy.
And I must say that CF would cost me a fortune more for the same storage.
I am no an MBA, nor am I trying to defend them. But that is a gross generalization. MBA's are only viewed as money wasting company destroyers because that's all they get press for. When a business is run well, and has success, as the result of a hard working MBA, it doesn't exactly make news.
As Bill Waterson said (creator of Calvin and Hobbes,) "Sometimes I think the surest sign that there is intelligent life out there is that it hasn't tried to contact us yet."
I don't disagree. But I believe its mostly meaningless either way. Microsoft has already received quite a bit of bad PR with its anti-trust problems. Something tells me this hasn't caused the masses to run out and pick up a copy of Fedora Core.
I don't think they'll be losing much ground with standard Joe Consumer any day soon. Even if people do hear about how MS is or isn't bad, it doesn't effect their choice. People are brought up on MS, and companies like Dell and Gateway forcefeed it to their customers.
(I am aware this is only one portion of the market, I am not talking about corporate use.)

Get on a train, and then switch to a bus. Its simpler, cheaper, and the system is already in place. The practical applications of this idea seem rather flimsy.

This is very insightful, for the first two paragraphs. Then it just goes downhill.

This content added to avoid "lameness."
Heh, that archiving idea is actually a pretty clever idea. I never really thought to use an e-mail account like that.
By the way, if you're interested in sending me an invite, I'd surely appreciate it. Let me know, metallic@adelphia.net

Before you start fellating Disney for their kindness; keep in mind they get a nice tax write off for it.

Probably yes, at great cost.
I'll stick with my iPod thanks.
Hrm. If only they could brute force it.
the lesser of two evils.

You think Microsoft has a lot of patents? Check out IBM.
Actually, that's not a bad idea..

It should be a crime to own a car, you could use it to run someone over.
