    All it would take to enter an Ice Age is either a huge Meteor to hit or a giant volcanic eruption. Isn't it a theory that the 'natural' cycle of Ice Ages just the cycles of ash from volcanic eruptions blocking the sun and causing an 'ice age'?

    Perhaps you should learn to use XP's recovery console tools to fix XP, rather than boot to knoppix, mount drive, copy files off, wipe XP, re-install, copy back files, yada yada. Have you heard of 'chkdsk /r' or 'fixboot'? Maybe give those a try first.

    Sounds like you want to enable Auditing on the AD domain for logins and logoffs. You can use a good open source monitoring tool called Big Brother 'www.bb4.com' to monitor machines by ping, nslookup, or any other service you'd like. It can mail or page your cellphone if something goes down. We use it to watch servers, services, websites, and switches. It's highly customizable. Plus you can put the big brother client on each desktop and monitor cpu usage or even available disk space. Also it's a good idea to keep the default share open, and enable remote desktop sharing on each client.

    The solution? A lot of money. Is it worth the price of 4 extra T1's, 12 extra servers/boxes/switches, not to mention labor? The solution is to be able to call up your ISP, tell them you're being DOS'ed and have them call and yourself call the authorities. If the authorities don't help, then we need new authorities.

    Although I'm a DOS/WIN bred, linux neophyte, I could never gotten to the point of having a streaming media/ftp/web Debian server without Doc's and Howto's. This is Linux greatest strength and whoever helped make this a standard deserves many props.

    After our exchange server died today, I read of a Cert advisory of possible SMTP denial of service attack. We downed the server and now we're looking at traffic at our router. Too early to say, but has anyone else been hit by DOS on their exchange servers today?

    I would think that sniffers on a LAN would be right up at #1. I had never used a sniffer before and was easily able to sniff out a clear text un/pw on my own network with the command

    tcpdump -a -X -s 1600 > /home/user/dumpoutput

    dsniff looks to make it even easier.

    This is an informative article because it provides info for fixing the problems. Not everyone who installs a nix box (or M$ box for that matter) knows how easy someone can steal your password. Looks like I'm going to install SFTP now...

    I run webmin in SSL https mode, but I'm a little concerned about people brute-forcing into it. Which logs did you look at to see those log-in attempts? I'm still new to reading logs; is it an apache error log or a webmin log? Good job setting an email trigger. I like it for configuring ProFTP; I was able to get multiple accounts for multiple users going without them being able to access other folders, but still, my root access is able to get into all.

    Thanks - I'm still somewhat newbie, but do I want to do an

    apt-get upgrade ssh

    or

    apt-get install ssh

    or

    apt-get upgrade

    I'm worried that doing a complete upgrade (apt-get upgrade) will upgrade everything causing my system to freak out like it did the last time I tried to upgrade my version of debian unstable.

    FYI, the command to find out which version of ssh is running, type:

    ssh -V

    My results were

    OpenSSH_3.4p1 Debian 1:3.4p1-4, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090607f

    This is the version I have after doing an "apt-get update". Is this the version I need? Do I need to re-start the daemon to get the newest version or am I good 2 go?

    This is not positive legislation for minorities and would prevent any number of health services, education, and civil services to untold numbers of poor and uneducated. Have these people thought of someone that goes online and can't read the instructions for "aquiring a license"? Just one person denied the freedom of browsing online should be enough to wipe this idea from the planet.

    This browser *in use now* is my newest best friend (I know, sad huh). Simple, elegant, tabs, history, caches, privacy, and it's download manager are all that I need. Also, it just performs faster, blocks popups, it's free and just seems to have more for my money. I'd like to see better plug-in support; java, shockwave, Wild tangent and some other plugins aren't exactly mindless installs in some cases. Also I would like to see Firebird run in memory in the background like Mozilla does, and a download "acceleration" with mulitple FTP sites would be a bonus. Otherwise, it's my favorite DEFAULT browser :-)

    3com has some pretty sweet buscuits that are actually switches. That means a 2 or 4 port drop conduit (biscuit) mounted to the wall sits on a single ethernet cable. Kind of saves you the time of sending 4 cables to every room. Cat5e should be sufficent for gigabit ethernet. D-Link has a 4 port auto-negotiate 10/100/1000 switch for only around $150. You can run this off of one cable in each room instead of the 3 com job. I'm not sure it 3 com has a gigabit conduit/switch.

    I don't think it's ludicrous. Any number of problems could develop. The very material that forms the micro-tubes can be corroded by impure water just like the tubes of a radiator corrode and leak. One big jolt or shock from a drop, or simply leaving it on for 6 months may have ill effects. I just didn't see any kind of Quality assurance info in the article and these are valid concerns.

    A 2 millimeter thin piece of glass containing water? Not to mention rust, water just seems to difficult to keep safe for a machine that's supposed to last a lifetime.

    How long will a single battery power a laptop with this thing? An extra hour? Dell has discontinued Latitude "C" model for the "D" model which has Centrino technology. The "D"'s work pretty well; my laptop stayed up for a full work day (8 1/2 hours).

    You mean Microsoft's IPX client or a generic client? Interesting, can you provide me a link to info about the NFAP client?
